u key fauvism . His portrait of Matisse (1905; Philadelphia Mus. of Art) is a characteristic fauvist composition. Early in his career, however, Derain revealed a tendency toward an architectonic arrangement of forms, and his art gradually assumed a more conservative expression. He was influenced by African art and the work of French and Italian primitives. Derain is well represented in American collections, including the Lyman Allyn Museum, New London, Conn., and the Art Institute, Chicago. See study by D. Sutton (1959).

ANDRE DERAIN Andre Derain was born in 1880 in Chatou, an artist colony outside Paris. In 1898, he enrolled in the Academie Carriere in Paris where he met Matisse. After his military service from 1900-1904, Derain exhibited his work at the Salon des Independants and then at the Salon d'Automne with Matisse, Vlaminck and others, thus creating the movement of Fauvism. In 1906, Derain met Picasso and his dealer, who purchased Derain's entire studio, creating newfound financial success. During this time, he was hired for the illustrations for works by Guillaume Apollinaire and Andre Breton. After World War I, his friend's Cubism movement affected his art, along with influence from Classicism and African Art. Derain stayed in Paris during most of the Occupation, where he was esteemed by the Nazis because of his artistic integrity. Hitler's Foreign Minister commissioned him to paint a family portrait, but he politely refused. His popularity began to decline after the war because of disagreement over new artistic movements. He later lost most of his eyesight due to illness, which may have been the reason he was hit by a truck in 1954, dying from shock at the age of 74. CLICK HERE FOR ARTWORK BY ANDRE DERAIN

Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection, 1998 (1999.363.83)
The head of Derain, shown lifesize and in extreme close-up, is more vivid than any photograph could be. There is no indication of surrounding space. Vlaminck boldly outlined in black the contours of the head, hair, shoulders, and collar. Then he painted the face red, highlighting rather than modeling the facial features with strokes of vivid chrome yellow and a daring patch of green on the nose. Both eyes have blue lids, and the blue moustache spirals out to the left. Derain kept this portrait until his death in 1954.

(1880-1954) Derain was at the centre of avant-garde developments in Paris between 1900 and 1920, working as a painter, sculpture, graphic artist and theatrical designer. He was one of the creators of Fauvism, and an early enthusiast of Cubism, but his later work nods more towards the influence of the Old Masters; he has been described as a 'parasite' on the past and the present, artistically speaking, straddling two styles.

    Copenhagen, , DK
Andre Derain (1880-1954), like his close colleagues Matisse and Picasso, is among the artists who carried out the most uncompromising reinvention of the art of painting during the first half of the 20th century. Delegated to the back stalls of art history for decades, Derain's life's work is now unfurled in its full glory. In the spring of 2007, Statens Museum for Kunst will be one of the first museums in the world to present a large retrospective exhibition about this controversial and epoch-making master painter who fell out of favour in his own time. In addition to a number of Derain's important works from the museum's own collection, museums such as the Tate Modern in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, The National Gallery of Art in Washington, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA in New York have contributed significant loans to the exhibition, which shows a total of 85 works. From the shocking start to the late experiments The starting point of the exhibition is the years surrounding André Derain's breakthrough in 1905, a year which became a milestone in recent art history. This was the year when Derain and his friend Matisse caused a stir with their new invention: Fauvism. Their bold liberation of colour on the canvas and highly insistent accentuation of the painterly aspect of their art marked a prominent break with their audience's expectations of art. Initially viewed as wild barbarism by shocked contemporaries, their work came to serve as a crucial example and source of inspiration to subsequent generations of artists.

    Andre Derain
Birth Year : 1880 Death Year : 1954 Country : France Andr© Derain was born in Ch¢tou, a suburb of Paris. Excellent scholar that he was, Derain had first planned to become an engineer before suddenly deciding to study art at the Acad©mie Julian. He shared a studio with his friend Vlaminck , painted with Matisse at Collioure near Marseilles, and was a frequent visitor to the ramshackle studios on the rue Ravignan, known as the Bateau Lavoir, where his friends Braque and Picasso worked. As a Fauve Derain was principally concerned with line and color and enjoyed squeezing tubes of bright color on his canvas, particularly pinks, blues, and violets. In and around 1908, Derain turned to the study of form and structure, and experimented with Cubism, Impressionism, and the styles of van
