Delaunay concentrated on orphism , while his later works were more abstract , reminiscent of Paul Klee . His key influence related to bold use of colour, and a clear love of experimentation of both depth and tone . While he was a child, Delaunay's parents divorced, and he was raised by his uncle, in La Ronch¨re (near Bourges ). He took up painting at an early age and, by 1903, he was producing mature imagery in a confident, impressionistic style. In 1908, after a term in the military working as a regimental librarian, he met Sonia Terk , whom he later married, though at the time she was married to a German art dealer whom she would soon divorce. In 1909, Delaunay began to paint a series of studies of the city of Paris and the Eiffel Tower . The following year, he married Terk, and the couple settled in a studio apartment in Paris, where they later had a son. At the invitation of

Robert Delaunay, letter to August Macke
Direct observation of the luminous essence of nature is for me indispensable. I do not necessarily mean observation with palette in hand, although I am not opposed to notations taken from nature itself. I do much of my work from nature, "before the subject," as it is commonly called. But what is of great importance to me is observation of the movement of colors. Only in this way have I found the laws of complementary and simultaneous contrasts of colors which sustain the very rhythm of my vision. In this movement of colors I find the essence, which does not arise from a system, or an a priori theory. For me, every man distinguishes himself by his essence his personal movement, as opposed to that which is universal. That is what I found in your works that I saw this winter at Cologne. You are not in direct communication with nature, the only source of inspiration directed toward beauty.' Such communication affects representation in its most vital and critical aspect. This communication alone, by the comparison of the antagonisms, rivalries, movements which give birth to decisive moments, permits the evolution of the soul, whereby a man realizes himself on earth. It is impossible to be concerned with anything else in art.

"As an artist, as a manual craftsman, I wage my revolution on walls. I have now discovered new materials that can transform a wall, not only externally but in its very substance. Separate man from art? Never. I cannot separate man from art because I build houses for him! Even when fashion dictated easel art, I was already envisaging great murals." Robert Delaunay. Robert Delaunay was born in Paris to an upper class family. He started painting when he was young and served an apprenticeship with a theatrical designer from 1902 to 1904. Otherwise he had no formal training. He was first exhibited in 1904 at the Salon des Independents (he was the youngest exhibitor ever) and his work was clearly influenced by the Impressionists. He began to experiment soon after, however, taking pointillist ideas and stretching them to incorporate colour and movement. By 1908 he was playing an active role in the development of Cubism. His painting 'The Eiffel Tower' (1910) was received with great acclaim, and two years later his 'City of Paris' caused a sensation at the Salon des Independents. Delaunay's abstract works proved revolutionary in the development of French art. Apollinaire christened his style Orphism in the way the art had similarities with the abstract in music. By 1914

Biography Born in Paris (FR) French painter who spent most of his artistic life experimenting with colour and movement. His palette was juxtaposed and contrasting, influenced in part by the pointillist painter Seurat. The name 'Orphism' was given to Delaunay's work, which by 1912 was completely abstract, and his work had a major influence on Paul Klee and Auguste Macke. Although his home became a meeting place for Dada artists, Delaunay's work was seen as repetitive after 1920, when he returned from Spain and Portugal to Paris. Died in Montpellier (FR) Public exhibitions from 27.4.

Delaunay painted Nude woman reading in Madrid in 1915, a year after he and his wife, the painter Sonia Delaunay, had left Paris for Spain and Portugal. They remained there for the next seven years. The move marked a dramatic change in Delaunay's art, both in colour and in subject matter.
In Paris, during the two preceding years, he had experimented with the effects of colour vibration and proposed a theory that linked colour, light, music and poetry. The strong light of Spain intensified his reaction to colour. More dramatically, he abandoned abstract subjects for strongly figurative work.
Though Nude woman reading is clearly representational, it is still essentially concerned with the colour theory and the 'vibrations' achieved through dissonant colours. This can be seen in the alignment of pink, orange and red, of violet-blue and yellow-orange, but most particularly in the prismatic colours that describe the torso.
This is the only time Delaunay chose to paint the female nude, though he made at least nine further variations on the theme.

Paintings An example of his early neo-impressionistic work is 'Eiffel Tower'. Around 1910 Delaunay created his own style, inspired by cubism: Orhpism. The main idea behind Delaunay's Orphism was that not the object defined the picture, but movement, light, and rhythm. Examples of his Orphist paintings are 'Circular Forms', 'Rhythme Sans Fin', 'Joie de Vivre' and 'Homage to Bleriot'.

Delaunay, Robert
Robert-Victor-Félix Delaunay was born in Paris on April 12, 1885. In 1902, after secondary education, he apprenticed in a studio for theater sets in Belleville. In 1903 he started painting and by 1904 was exhibiting, that year and in 1906 at the Salon d'Automne and from 1904 until World War I at the Salon des Indépendants. Between 1905 and 1907 Delaunay became friendly with Henri Rousseau and Jean Metzinger and studied the color theories of M E Chevreul; he was then painting in Neo-Impressionist manner. Paul Cézanne 's work also influenced Delaunay around this time. From 1907-08 he served in the military in Laon and upon returning to Paris he had contact with the Cubists. The period 1909-10 saw the emergence of Delaunay's personal style: he painted his first Eiffel Tower in 1909. In 1910 Delaunay married the painter Sonia Terk, who became his collaborator on many projects. Delaunay's participation in exhibitions in Germany and association with advanced artists working there began in 1911, the year Vasily Kandinsky invited him to participate in the first Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) exhibition in Munich. At this time he became friendly with
