Biography:

As a lifelong student of Italian Renaissance and sixteenth century painters, Edgar Degas developed a passionate interest for accuracy in his forms. He met Manet in 1861, who introduced him to the impressionism and allowed him to participate in most of their exhibitions. Despite the tendency of the Impressionists to favor landscapes, Degas is most recognized by his painting of female dancers. When his sight began to fail in 1875, Degas began to experiment with pastels, capturing momentary images with a departure from classical poses. Degas is also known for his sculptures, which he created out of wax and clay originally, but were cast in bronze after his death.

A founding member of the Impressionist movement, considered a realist within the group, Degas was trained classically and believed in the importance of drawing. He wanted to document modern life and had a preference for artificial light and urban subjects, particularly female workers and ballerinas. His works include The Star (Dancer on a Stage,ca. 1878) and The Glass of Absinthe (1876). After 1886 Degas rarely showed his work.

A superb draughtsman and a master of bold compositions, Edgar Degas was able to impose a sense of immediacy on his work, which became particularly evident in his famous paintings of dancers, who were the subject of over half of his collected work.
Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas liked to cut off figures in his compositions to give the impression of spontaneous observation in his paintings. He also worked with lines of vision and asymmetry to achieve this effect.

Edgar Degas BACK
Degas actually hated the Impressionists and worshipped the act of drawing. Though not in agreement with the Impressionist style, Degas aligned himself with the movement from its beginning in protest against the sterile academic theory and practice. Degas strove for perfection in every possible way. He experimented with graphic media, perfected the art of pastel, made monotypes and etchings and modelled in clay and wax in order to understand the movements of his dancers and racehorses. He never painted on the spot, but composed only after much observation, many studies and a most intimate knowledge of the subject, relying on a prodigious visual memory. Therefore it is a tragic irony that Degas suffered from poor eyesight, eventually not being able to paint at all, and then shunning society in his later years. An excerpt from Degas by Linda Bolton:
Degas, unlike the Impressionists, did not favor working directly from life or painting out of doors. His concerns were with drawing, form and composition, not with the rapid recording of transient effects of light, and his chosen subject was people, not landscape. He made endless studies for his paintings, filling whole notebooks with drawings of hands, or a particular architectural feature for a background, and for his racecourse scenes he studied horses in close quarters at the Haras-du-Pin stud as well as making small clay or wax models to help him understand the animals'anatomy and the effects of motion. He believed in committing a subject to memory through repeated drawing, and when he felt he had arrived at a full understanding of it he would synthesize his many studies into a thought-out composition.

Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas Biography
Edgar Degas (19 July 1834 – 27 September 1917), born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas, was a French artist famous for his work in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. Edgar Degas is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although Edgar Degas rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draughtsman, Edgar Degas is especially identified with the subject of the dance, and over half his works depict dancers. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement, as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are considered to be among the finest in the history of art. Early in his career, his ambition was to be a history painter, and for this his academic training and close study of classic art had superbly prepared him. Upon abandoning this project, Edgar Degas brought the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter, and became a classical painter of modern life.
