He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draughtsman , he is especially identified with the subject of the dance, and over half his works depict dancers. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement, as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes . His portraits are considered to be among the finest in the history of art.

Home Virtual Museum Individual Artists : Edgar Degas Edgar Degas: 1834 - 1917 A member of a Neapolitan banking family that had settled in Paris, Degas studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and then spent a few years in Italy. Although he participated in all the Impressionist exhibitions except the seventh, he sometimes caused disunity within the group and was not deeply involved in their technical innovations - being more concerned with linear and compositional issues. His subject matter ranged from horse-racing and ballet to cafe and brothel scenes. He was also a keen photographer, and in his old age turned largely to sculpture. A lifelong bachelor, Degas was dandified, witty and opinionated. Degas never really accepted impressionism on Monet's terms, and was its great traditionalist even while he was one of its most startling innovators. It was never necessary for Degas to revert to traditionalism as Renoir was to do, since he had been a traditionalist from the beginning. His innovations, eccentric at first glance, are as a matter of fact brilliantly logical extensions of traditional principles. Degas was the aristocrat of the impressionists, not only by birth but in his intellectuality and reserve, his personal detachment in observing a commonplace world to record it intimately. Of all the impressionists he is the most subtle, disguised as the most direct; the most reflective, disguised as the most noncommittal; the most acute, disguised as the most casual. He is their finest draughtsman and composer; he is one of the finest draughtsmen and composers of any period. He was the only impressionist to recognize that the momentary effect - with Degas a moment may be split to its ultimate fraction - can be used for complete revelation of individual character. He was, in fact, the only impressionist who was interested in painting individuals as psychological entities. The personalities he thus recorded exist with completeness, a reality, that puts their portraits among the great ones of any age.

September 5th, 2007 Edgar Degas is a well known French artist who was regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism. Aside form his paintings, Degas was also known for his sculptures, prints as well as drawings. He was especially identified with depicting dancers as his subjects which cover over half of his works. He has also done quite a number of female nudes as well as a number of works depicting happenings on the racecourse. Degas eventually concentrated more on drawing and painting and by 1855, received admission into the famous Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he flourished and began to excel in the arts. In 1856, he went to Italy where he would remain for three years to further study and learn from the early artists of the Renaissance by drawing and making copies of well known masterpieces. Degas fervently studied the arts and learned the various techniques of high, academic as well as classical art. From then on he began his career as an artist. Entry Filed under: Artists

Edgar Degas has traditionally been associated with the Impressionists, whose work focused on new ways of recording modern life. The Impressionist movement consisted of about 20 rebel artists who endeavoured to change some of the entrenched conventions of nineteenth-century French art by adopting new techniques and subjects. They attempted to capture the initial visual sensation or impression of a scene, often working outdoors ( en plein air ) on small canvases. The Impressionists worked with oil paint in a quick sketchy fashion to record the optical effects of light and colour of a particular scene. Like many artists of his day, Degas looked to the leisure activities of the French middle-class for his subjects. Ballet classes were a favourite, providing ample opportunity for Degas to study the human body in poses ranging from intense activity to rest.

Edgar was counting up money, training to be a banker. He looked up and saw his beautiful mother. He looked at her brown curls and thought that he could paint something that was just as elegant. He looked at her simple smile and said that he was tired of being a big shot banker. Edgar also said that he wanted to do something artistic, and so he did. Edgar Degas's family wasn't really all together. In fact when he was 35 years old, Edgar hadn't said a word to his brother in 5 years. Edgar's family lived in Paris. They all expected him to be a banker like his father.
As he got older, Edgar became very bitter and literally drove away all his friends, but the good times still remained in his mind. Edgar would sometimes take his friends out to special dinners, but he only had his cruelty, blindness, and paintings to keep him company, whatever company that may be.
People thought he should be a lawyer, or a person that was paid a lot of money at least, but Edgar Degas was far more interested in the females beauty, a mans strength, and beautiful colors. He was also influenced by Leonardo da Vinci. He was one of the many very successful artists that made their living off the thousands of dollars they made selling their sculptures and paintings. The streets of Paris seemed interesting to paint. So if he could sell one of those paintings he might become famous and rich.
Degas was an Impressionist. He despised that word because everyone in Paris was one. So he just called himself an artist. Edgar's style was that he sketched pictures of ballerinas, horses, and nudes. It seemed that in each series of pictures he had his own special color. Like in his ballet pictures a dull blue was used. I his horse paintings their coats were made of a bright reddish brown, and for his nude paintings a creamy Bausch for their body. In his paintings most of the lines were smooth light and curved.

Degas, (Hilaire-Germain-) Edgar
Degas, (Hilaire-Germain-) Edgar (b. July 19, 1834, Paris, Fr.d. Sept. 27, 1917, Paris)
French artist, acknowledged as the master of drawing the human figure in motion. Degas worked in many mediums, preferring pastel to all others. He is perhaps best known for his paintings, drawings, and bronzes of ballerinas and of race horses. The art of Degas reflects a concern for the psychology of movement and expression and the harmony of line and continuity of contour. These characteristics set Degas apart from the other impressionist painters, although he took part in all but one of the 8 impressionist exhibitions between 1874 and 1886. Degas was the son of a wealthy banker, and his aristocratic family background instilled into his early art a haughty yet sensitive quality of detachment. As he grew up, his idol was the painter Jean Auguste Ingres , whose example pointed him in the direction of a classical draftsmanship, stressing balance and clarity of outline. After beginning his artistic studies with Louis Lamothes, a pupil of Ingres, he started classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts but left in 1854 and went to Italy. He stayed there for 5 years, studying Italian art, especially Renaissance works.

See also: Impressionism VIEW IMAGE LIST "...Aspects of Degas's work - mainly, his ballet paintings from the 1880S - have long been popular with a broad audience; too much so for their own good. But he has never been a "popular" artist like the wholly inferior Auguste Renoir , whose Paris-Boston retrospective in 1985 beguiled the crowds and bored everyone else. Degas was much harder to take, with his spiny intelligence (never Renoir's problem), his puzzling mixtures of categories, his unconventional cropping and, above all, his "coldness" - that icy, precise objectivity which was one of the masks of his unrelenting power of aesthetic deliberation. Besides, the long continuities of his work have not always been obvious. The figure you think he skimmed from the street like a Kodak turns out to have been there already, in Ingres or Watteau or some half-forgotten seventeenth-century draftsman who suited his purposes. Degas was the most modern of artists, but his kind of modernity, which entailed a passionate working relationship with the remote as well as the recent past, hardly exists today. How we would have bored him, with our feeble jabber of postmodernist "appropriation"!
