    Introduction
    Giorgio de Chirico was born in Volos, Greece in 1888 and is considered a Greek-Italian painter. He was strongly influenced by Arnold Bocklin, a Swiss painter of the 19th century. His work is known for its dark and gloomy quality, showing barren landscapes through the use of exaggerated angles and unnatural figures. De Chirico was one of the founders of the Metaphysical art movement.

ADVANCED SEARCH GIORGIO DE CHIRICO'S FANTASY WORLD AT THE ESTORICK By Christine Barlow Left: Piazza d'Italia, 1961, oil on canvas. Private collection, London. The enigmatic paintings of Giorgio de Chirico, inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Ariadne, are explored at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in London until April 13. Born in 1888, de Chirico grew up to become one of the most innovative artists of the twentieth century before his death in 1978. His dreamlike paintings of deserted squares, shadows, stopped clocks and sleeping statues were a powerful influence on Surrealists such as Max Ernst and Salvador Dali, pop artist Andy Warhol as well as film, music, advertising and design since. Right: The Silent Statue, 1913, oil on canvas. Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dusseldorf. "This is the only venue in Europe to show this exhibition, which combines the popular art of de Chirico with an academic look behind it," says Roberta Cremoncini from the Estorick Collection. The exhibition brings together 18 paintings plus drawings and sculptures, completed at different times on the theme that haunted de Chirico all his life - that of the abandoned mythological princess (Me too - Editor.)

GIORGIO DE CHIRICO Volos (Tessaglia) 1888 - Roma 1978;
