The enigmatic paintings of Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978), with their dream-like imagery of deserted city squares, filled with mysterious shadows, stopped clocks and sleeping statues, had a profound influence on modern art. These Metaphysical works began around 1912 with a series of eight Ariadne paintings in which the artist depicted a reclining statue of the princess of Greek mythology in an empty, sun-drenched piazza. According to the legend, Ariadne was abandoned by her lover, Theseus, on the desert island of Naxos, after he had slain the Minotaur with the aid of her thread which had helped him to navigate the labyrinth. The mystery and melancholy of these pictures, completed between the spring of 1912 and the autumn of 1913, resonate throughout the artist's long career. This exhibition, which was first shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, brings together the entire Ariadne series, including such masterpieces as The Soothsayer's Recompense (1913), along with related drawings and sculpture, including an antique marble statue of Ariadne. This group of works, which would have such a powerful impact on the Surrealist paintings of Salvador Dali and Max Ernst, will be complemented by a selection of later paintings on the theme of Ariadne, whose serial approach foreshadows the work of Andy Warhol, a close friend of de Chirico in the 1970s.

"Enigma Variations: Philip Guston and Giorgio de Chirico"; Santa Monica Museum of Art
ArtForum Dec, 2006 by Jan Tumlir Although it might not amount to a new paradigm, the deployment of the comparative methoda standard art-historical gambitas a curatorial strategy occasionally allows us to look at familiar work with fresh eyes. The approach is most effective where arguably most incongruousthat is, within a modernist context, given modernism's emphasis on autonomy for artwork and artist alike. The suggestion that the unfolding of modern art is not necessarily a matter of consecutive seismic shake-ups but is more like a slowly unfolding conversation is no longer novel, and the validity of the relational Bakhtinian mode is well accepted, serving as a critical weapon in efforts to resist the market forces that divide and conquer artists by making them into separate brands.

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Giorgio de Chirico Biography Giorgio de Chirico (July 10, 1888 - November 20, 1978) was an Italian painter born in Greece, and with Carlo Carra founded the scuola metafisica art movement. He studied art in Munich at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he read the writings of the philosophers Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer and studied the works of Boecklin and Max Klinger.
De Chirico is best known for the paintings he produced between 1909 and 1919, his Metaphysical period, which are memorable for the haunted, brooding moods evoked by their images. At the start of this period, his subjects were still cityscapes inspired by the bright daylight of Mediterranean cities, but gradually he turned his attention to studies of cluttered storerooms, sometimes inhabited by mannequins.
He won praise for his work almost immediately from the writer Guillaume Apollinaire, who helped to introduce his work to the later Surrealists. Yves Tanguy wrote how one day in 1922 he saw one of de Chirico's paintings in an art dealer's window, and was so impressed by it he resolved on the spot to become an artist although he had never even held a brush! Other artists who acknowledged de Chirico's influence include Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, and René Magritte.
De Chirico also published a novel in 1925: Hebdomeros, the Metaphysician. His later paintings never received the same critical praise as did those from his metaphysical period.

Giorgio de Chirico
Birth Year : 1888 Death Year : 1978 Country : Greece Giorgio de Chirico was born in Greece, to Italian parents. Although he was the son of a railroad worker, Chirico quickly developed an interest in art. He studied in Athens, Munich and Italy, and settled in Paris in 1912, where he stayed until the outbreak of the First World War. Until his return to Paris in 1925, where he would live until 1940, Chirico lived in Germany, and was influenced by the surrealism of Alfred Bocklin and the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. Thus, in 1917, along with Carlo Carra, he founded the "Scuola Metafisica," a loosely formed group dedicated to the exploration of the mystery and fantasy underlying the surface reality.

Giorgio de Chirico I believe, however, that such abnormal moments can be found in everyone, and it is all the more fortunate when they occur in individuals with creative talent or with clairvoyant powers. But once these barriers are broken, it will enter the realms of childhood visions and dreams.

Duncan Hannah Regarding Teresa Ann
oil on canvas, 18 x 14 inches
Courtesy JG/Contemporary, New York I seem to have fallen in love. Teresa Ann is a prepubescent blonde with a luminous complexion. Her coyly vacuous gaze belies the provocativeness with which she lifts her skirt to reveal tender thighs and white stockings. But there's no need to call 911: It's not this Lolita herself I'm smitten with, but her creator, Duncan Hannah. Mind you, for a critic serious about painting to fall for Mr. Hannah is plenty perverse enough. Here is a painter who pushes deadpan to the point of necrophilia. He seems to will himself into Sunday painter mode.
