Giorgio de Chirico 1888 - 1978 Italian Version Giorgio de Chirico The painter was born of Italian parents in Volos, Greece, on July 10th 1888, and he died on November 20th 1978 in Rome, after unifying in a single period, referred to as “metaphysical”, all the themes and styles of the last ten years of his activity.
Origins and formation
In 1910 he went to live in Paris where he made the acquaintance of Guillaume Apollinaire, M. Jacob and Pablo Picasso and became interested in metaphysical painting, where all his repertory of enigmatic objects and visions from mannequins to the Squares of Italy are collected in an impossible space, because they are without prospective and infinite. The forms are often assimilated to geometric volumes which hint of the cubist influence and are set out as mysterious symbols.
Italy and Paris
In February 1910 Savinio left for Paris, whilst de Chirico returned to Italy, first living in Milan, then in Florence. During a long illness he studied the writings of Arthur Schopenauer and Friedrich Nietzsche and created his first autonomous paintings free of the Bocklin influence. In July 1911, together with his mother, he joined Savinio in Paris, stopping on the way in Turin, the town in which the madness of Nietzsche began. At the 1912 Salon d’Automne, for the first time ,de Chirico exhibited his melancholy pictures of town squares populated by solitary monuments and enclosed by blind arcades.

Italian painter whose works are characterized by deep shadow and perspective, barren landscapes, and elements of classical architecture and sculpture. Chirico, Giorgio de Chirico, Giorgio de (1888-1978), Italian painter, who founded the school of metaphysical painting. Born in Volos, Greece, he used exaggerated perspective and sharp contrasts of light and shadow to evoke a haunting, ominous dream world. He also painted bizarre, faceless mannequins and juxtaposed wildly unrelated objects in his still lifes, a technique adopted by the surrealists

Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Paul Schectman, Class of 1935. 76.90 Immediately prior to World War I, the Greco-Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico created enigmatic paintings in which he used a traditional style to describe not the external world, but haunting dreamscapes infused with illogical images, bizarre spatial constructions, and a pervasive melancholic mood. He was greatly inspired by the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, who believed hidden realities were seen in such strange juxtapositions as the long shadows cast by the setting sun into large open city squares and onto public monuments. De Chirico called his art "metaphysical," and with it hoped to destabilize the meaning of everyday objects by making them symbols of fear, alienation, and uncertainty. His paintings were highly influential for the Surrealists a decade later in their effort to create art from the unconscious. Andromache refers to the beautiful and loyal wife of Hector, the Trojan warrior slain by Achilles in the Iliad . Here Andromache stands, reduced to simple ovoids, alone in a quiet, almost airless Italian

This is turn led him to create the Pittura Metafisica ("metaphysical painting") movement, which had a membership of around two artists in its heyday. It (and de Chirico's early works) did, however, have an enormous impact on Surrealism years later - long after de Chirico had moved on to writing, sculpting and theater design (none of which was metaphysical).
