Biography:

Giorgio de Chirico was born in Greece and studied in Athens and Munich. Early in his career he collaborated with Carlo Carra in Italy, creating the concept of metaphysical painting. In 1910, Chirico began to favor lonely, deserted cityscapes with a dream-like feeling, paintings which lead to the formation of Surrealism. During the World War I period, he reverted to his metaphysical paintings, and in the 1920’s he stepped into the realm of abstraction. At the end of his career, he changed his focus to a more traditional and naturalist style.

Giorgio de Chirico
After studying art in Athens and Florence, de Chirico moved to Germany in 1906 and entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he read the writings of the philosophers Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer, and studied the works of Arnold Böcklin and Max Klinger.
He returned to Italy in 1909 and painted the first of his 'Metaphysical Town Square' series: The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon after the revelation he felt in Piazza Santa Croce. He also painted The Enigma of the Oracle. While traveling, De Chirico was profoundly moved by what he called the 'metaphysical aspect' of Turin: the architecture of its archways and piazzas. It was the city of Nietzsche. De Chirico moved to Paris in July 1911, where he joined his brother Andrea. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne three of his works Enigma of the Oracle, Enigma of an Afternoon and Self-Portrait. He also exhibited his work at the Salon des Indépendants and Salon d'Automne and his work was noticed by Pablo Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire. He also sold his first painting, The Red Tower. In 1914 through Guillaume Apollianaire, he met the art dealer Paul Guillame, with whom he signed a contract for his artistic output.
At the outbreak of the First World War, he decided to return to Italy. In army, he was considered unfit for work and assigned to the hospital at Ferra. He continued to paint. From 1918 his work was exhibited extensively in Europe. He met and married his first wife, the Russian Ballerina Raissa Gurievich in 1924, and together they moved to Paris. In 1928 he held his first exhibition in New York and shortly afterwards, London.

Andrea adopted the pseudonym of Alberto Savinio in his work as a writer and musician. During this time Giorgio, whose father always supported his passion for art, took his first drawing lessons with the Greek painter Mavrudis. And it was in Athens that De Chirico realized his first painting, entitled "Still Life with Lemons (Natura morta con limoni)". Giorgio de Chirico
    Birth Year : 1888
Death Year : 1978 Country : Greece Giorgio de Chirico was born in Greece, to Italian parents. Although he was the son of a railroad worker, Chirico quickly developed an interest in art. He studied in Athens, Munich and Italy, and settled in Paris in 1912, where he stayed until the outbreak of the First World War. Until his return to Paris in 1925, where he would live until 1940, Chirico lived in Germany, and was influenced by the surrealism of Alfred Bocklin and the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. Thus, in 1917, along with Carlo Carra, he founded the "Scuola Metafisica," a loosely formed group dedicated to the exploration of the mystery and fantasy underlying the surface reality. A well-regarded pre-Symbolist, Chirico was one of the first artists to evoke a sense of mystery and poetry through the juxtaposition of seemingly unlikely objects. He applied highly individualized, even autobiographical motifs to his art works. His enigmatic groupings somehow suggest subtle and elusive meanings that could be derived if only one had the keys to unlock them.

Around 1917, de Chirico developed his concept of Pittura Metafisica (Metaphysical painting) and began producing disturbing, dreamlike images of deserted cities and still scenes with mysterious mannequins made from combinations of objects. These pictures of a restless dream world evoke the heightened perception of the subconscious and are the direct antecedents of the Surrealism of the 1920s.
De Chirico's Metaphysical paintings were hugely influential on the Surrealist artists, including Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Max Ernst. The Surrealists recognized in his paintings the eloquent expression of the unconscious and nonsensical to which they themselves aspired. In 1926, however de Chirico changed to a more classical style with traditional subject matter, which lead to his break with the Surrealist group and André Breton calling him "a lost genius." It was not until 1955-1960 that de Chirico openly went back to creating art with Metaphysical subject matter.

An Italian, born in 1888 and raised partly in Greece - where his father, an engineer, planned and built railroads - he led a productive life, almost Picassoan in length; he died in 1978. He had studied in Munich, and in his early twenties, under the spell of the Symbolist painter Surrealism "This phase of his work - the so-called pittura metafisica - lasted until about 1918. Thereafter, de Chirico changed. He wanted to become, and almost succeeded in becoming, a classicist. He imagined himself to be the heir of Titian . Rejected by the French avant-garde, he struck back with disputatious critiques of modernist degeneracy; for the next sixty years of his life, he remained an obdurate though not very skillful academic painter. He even took to signing his work "Pictor Optimus" ("the best painter"). The sheer scale of his failure - if that is the word for it - is almost as fascinating as the brilliance of his early talent. Naturally, a great deal of both has been hidden by the polemical dust, and last week [
