Jacques-Louis David and the Training of Professional Women Painters
Jessica Cresseveur Articles in this Topic Discussions in this Topic Mar 10, 2004
It is understood that Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) was one of the most prominent and influential artists of his time, amassing nearly 400 students between 1780 and 1825. As in the schools of some of his contemporaries, such as Jean-Baptiste Regnault and Joseph-Beno®t Suv©e, several of these students were women. However, while the wives of Regnault and Suv©e were trained artists and often oversaw the education of their women pupils, this was not true in the school of David. While his wife Charlotte conducted many business transactions concerning her husband's post-Revolutionary career, she was not trained in the visual arts nor did she take in any pupils. Her husband directly taught both men and women students, albeit in separate surroundings for most of his career in Paris. In this article, I will outline how David's role in the instruction of women painters demonstrates his support of women becoming professional artists. In 1786, David's friend Elisabeth Vig©e-Lebrun-herself a popular painter-began to refurbish her atelier and needed someone else to provide instruction to her students in the meantime. In 1787, he agreed to take in Marie-Guillemine (later Benoist) and Marie-Elisabeth LaVille-Leroulx and a Mlle Duchosal.

    Birth Year : 1748
    Death Year : 1825
    Country : France
Jacques Louis David was born in Paris and first studied with Francois Boucher , whose influence may be seen in his works until 1770. In 1768, however, David had begun his studies with the Neoclassicist Joseph Marie Vien. A two-time winner of the Prix de Rome, David did not go to Italy until 1775. He remained for five years, studying the works of Caravaggio and other seventeenth-century Italian Baroque artists. David attracted much attention in Rome for the realistic vigor of his series of strong portraits. He became more and more deeply involved, while in Rome, in the Neoclassical aesthetics of Vien, Anton Raphael Mengs, Johann Winckelmann, and Benjamin West. David studied antique sculpture and ancient history and began to choose his subjects from the latter. The work that became the manifesto of Neoclassicism, the "Oath of the Horatii", was painted in 1784-85, on a second visit to Rome. In this and in his next great work, "The Death of Socrates", painted in Paris with figures inspired by classical statues and compositions taken from Roman bas-reliefs, David added two Caravaggiesque touches: sharp lighting that casts clear shadows, and realistic detail. David's art, embodying the ancient civic virtues, became the symbol of the Revolution and its aesthetic doctrines. David was also active in the political side of the French Revolution where, from about 1787, he was the arbiter of taste and design in furniture, clothing, and the stage, as actors began to pose in groups similar to those in his paintings. He brought about the downfall of the French Royal Academy, thus freeing artists from its narrow tradition. He taught more than sixty pupils and was imitated by scores of artists. In 1793 David painted the realistic "Death of Marat", a powerful painting closer to the sensibilities of a

    Review Summary
Each episode of Portrait of an Artist offers an intimate peek at the life and work of an important figure in the world of art. Not just a dry discussion of the major works, this is an exploration of the environment that produced the artist and influenced his work. From interviews with family and friends, to short trips to the artist's favorite haunts, no stone is left unturned. In this particular episode, viewers explore the life and work of Jacques-Louis David, an artist whose strident political views both landed him in jail and thrust him into a leadership role within the art world. ~ Rob Ferrier, All Movie Guide

    Oil on Canvas
    260 x 221 cm (87 x 102 3/8 in)
David and his assistants painted five versions of this famous portrait. this one was the first. King Charles IV of Spain ordered it in 1800 for the Royal Palace in Madrid and David painted it in four months. Having become King of Spain, Joseph Bonaparte took the painting with him when he was forced to leave Madrid. This picture hung in his house in Point Breeze near Philadelphia for many years until it was returned to Europe. David chose to romanticize the event by changing the sure-footed mule on which Bonaparte crossed the alps into a dashing charger. the hero is depicted in the uniform he wore at the Battle of Marengo . David painted the uniform accurately because he had it brought to his studio. Other Work By the Artist:
