Jacques-Louis David: Empire to Exile traces the last twenty-five years of his turbulent career, from the mid-1790s following his imprisonment for his political entanglements, until his death in 1825 as an exile in Brussels. During this period David created some of the most powerful political images in modern history. He also made provocative paintings of classical myths as well as portraits of great sensitivity and directness. This exhibition, the first to focus on David's late career, offers a fresh assessment of the work of one of European art's canonical masters.
Jacques-Louis David: Empire to Exile has been organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities and by the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support was provided by The Brown Foundation, Inc., of Houston.

Biography:

Jacques-Louis David studied under Joseph-Marie Viens, his early training influencing him to paint in a rococo style. From 1775 to 1780, David studied in Italy and developed a stronger, more passionate, and patriotic approach. His paintings around this time were also political, as David had joined the National Convention during the French Revolution. Because of this, David was almost executed at the demise of his group, but was saved by his royalist wife. Still engaged with politics, David became involved with Napoleon, but was forced to move to Brussels when he was overthrown.

Jacques-Louis David is famous for his huge, dramatic canvasses of Napoleon and other historical figures, including Oath of the Horatii Death of Marat (1793) and The Sabine Women (1799). Early in his career he was a leader in the neoclassical movement; later his subjects became more modern and political. David was himself active in the French Revolution as a supporter of Robespierre and is sometimes called the chief propagandist for the Revolution; after the Reign of Terror ended he was briefly imprisoned for his actions. When Napoleon took power David became his court painter and created several grand canvasses of the Emperor, including the heroic Napoleon Bonaparte Crossing the Alps (1801) and the enormous Coronation of Napoleon and Josephine (1807). David also painted Napoleon in His Study (1812), with its famous image of Napoleon with one hand tucked inside his vest. After Napoleon's ouster David went in exile to Brussels, where he remained until his 1825 death.

David
Biography Full Name: Jacques-Louis David Born: Died: Born to a wealthy Parisian family, Jacques-Louis David was aged seven when his father was shot dead in a pistol duel. Brought up by his uncles, his desire was to paint and he was eventually sent to his mother's cousin, Francois Boucher, the most successful painter in France at the time. Painting became an important means of communication for David since his face was slashed during a sword fight and his speech became impeded by a benign tumour that developed from the wound, leading him to stammer. He was interested in painting in a new classical style that departed from the frivolity of the Rococo period and reflected the moral and austere climate before the French Revolution. David became closely aligned with the republican government and his work was increasingly used as propaganda with the Death of Marat proving his most controversial work.
Simon Schama on David
"If there's ever a picture that would make you want to die for a cause, it is Jacque-Louis David's Death of Marat. That's what makes it so dangerous - hidden away from view for so many years.

Jacques-Louis David Deputado à Convenção durante a Revolução francesa, regicida por ter votado a morte do rei de França Luís XVI, pintor histórico, principal expoente da reacção neo-clássica contra o estilo rococo, foi um dos raros grandes artistas franceses da época. Nasceu em Paris, em 30 de Agosto de 1748;

David, Jacques Louis
French painter, who introduced the neoclassical style in France and was its leading exemplar from the time of the revolution to the fall of Napoleon.
Nicolas Poussin
. David quickly evolved his own individual neoclassical style, drawing subject matter from ancient sources and basing form and gesture on Roman sculpture. His famous Oath of the Horatii (1784-1785, Louvre, Paris) was consciously intended as a proclamation of the new neoclassical style in which dramatic lighting, ideal forms, and gestural clarity are emphasized. Presenting a lofty moralistic (and by implication patriotic) theme, the work became the principal model for noble and heroic historical painting of the next two decades.
Napoleon's
official painter, chronicling the reign of Napoleon I in huge works such as Coronation of Napoleon and Josephine (1805-1807, Louvre). Following Napoleon's downfall, David was exiled to Brussel, where he stayed until his death. In these later years, he returned to mythological subjects drawn from the Greek and Roman past, painted in a more theatrical manner.
David's career represents the transition from the rococo of the 18th century to the realism of the 19th. His cool studied neoclassicism strongly influenced his pupils Antoine Jean Gros and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, and his patriotic and heroic themes paved the way for the romantics. He died in Brussel, December 29, 1825.

But definitely the historically most significant painting was 'Death of Marat'. This is Jean-Paul Marat, a paranoid fanatic of the French Revolution who summoned the guillotine to tens of thousands of people. But for David, Marat isn't a monster, he's a saint. This is martyrdom, David's manifesto of revolutionary virtue.

    David, Jacques-Louis
David, Jacques-Louis key David studied with Vien at the French Academy, and after winning the Prix de Rome (which had been refused him four times, causing him to attempt suicide by starvation) he accompanied Vien to Italy in 1775. His pursuit of the antique, nurtured by his time in Rome and his viewing of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum, directed the classical revival in French art. He borrowed classical forms and motifs, predominantly from sculpture, to illustrate a sense of virtue he mistakenly attributed to the ancient Romans. Consumed by a desire for perfection and by a passion for the political ideals of the French Revolution, David imposed a fierce discipline on the expression of sentiment in his work. This inhibition resulted in a distinct coldness and rationalism of approach.

Executive summary: French Neoclassical painter Johann Winckelmann Louis XVI , who had been the purchaser of his principal works, and his popularity was soon immense. At the outbreak of the Revolution in 1789, David was carried away by the flood of enthusiasm that made all the intellect of France believe in a new era of equality and emancipation from all the ills of life. The success of his sketch for the picture of the "Oath of the Tennis Court", and his pronounced republicanism, secured David's election to the Convention in September 1792, by the , and he quickly distinguished himself by the defense of two French artists in Rome who had fallen into the merciless hands of the Inquisition. As, in this matter, the behavior of the authorities of the French Academy in Rome had been dictated by the tradition of subservience to authority, he used his influence to get it suppressed. In the January following his election into the Convention his vote was given for the king's death. Thus the man who was so greatly indebted to the Roman academy and to Louis XVI assisted in the destruction of both, no doubt in obedience to a principle, like the act of Brutus in condemning his sons a subject he painted with all his powers. Cato and stoicism were the order of the day. Hitherto the actor had walked the stage in modern dress. Brutus had been applauded in red-heeled shoes and

Death of Marat The Coronation of Napoleon
David studied in Paris and then in Rome, drawing the Roman statues and familiarizing himself with the main figures of the Renaissance. Between 1775 and 1785, inspired by his work in Rome, he evolved his strikingly neoclassical idiom. An important picture from this period is The Oath of the Horatii After the death of the Jacobin leader Robespierre, David was twice imprisoned and narrowly escaped the guillotine. His The Rape of Sabine Women When Napoleon came to power, David became his official painter, creating such imperial images as Napoleon Crossing the Alps Napoleon Distributing the Eagles His style, which was inherited by several of his pupils, most notably
