so i was going to go to bed early last night, but got sucked into "in the realms of the unreal" a film about henry darger and his life. i have loved darger's work for a long time - especially after seeing a show of it at the folk art museum in NY a few years back. i knew the story - reclusive janitor by day, creater of a 15,000 page novel with illustrations by night. the volumes only to be discovered upon his death by his landlord... but i was still captivated by the film. there are only 3 known existing photos of mr. darger. and the film-maker animated some of his paintings.... it was captivating.
i am headed to LA to see family again. i am looking forward to it. also looking forward to good art. there are several shows to see... i'm hoping for more inspiration.... Comments Published by lisa s on 03 August 2005 at 10:00 PM.

Author: laughinglikemad Jan A reclusive janitor wrote a story . It was called, It is 15,145 pages long Henry Darger was a social non-entity , an orphaned laborer who lived in the same one-bedroom Chicago apartment for forty years. He picked up odd bits of trash, wore shabby clothes, and attended mass up to five times daily. He finally left his apartment, in 1973, for his deathbed. His landlords discovered his work, which include hundreds of paintings intermingled with trash-picked magazine photos. Darger had not once mentioned his work to a single soul. A stolen newspaper photo of a murdered girl inspired him to weave this whole world . Elsie Paroubek, age 5, was strangled and left in a drainage ditch in April 1911 - Darger would have been 19 at the time. Having her picture stolen from him was a trauma that haunted him the rest of his life. There are suspicions , the seven angelic Vivian Girls fight a vicious battle against the evil, child-torturing empire of Glandelinia. These girls carry parasols and machine guns, and endure massacre and torture in their eternal war. The characters number in the tens of thousands, including Darger himself, in multiple guises. He appears as both a protector, and a murderer.

Despite my nagging sense of responsibility, I emphatically do not want to see In the Realms of the Unreal for a second time. In my tarrying, there is silent protest amid internal debate, because my memory, alas, is imprinted, not with images but frustration and hostility toward a film I saw nearly a year ago in a hectic setting at the Cleveland International Film Festival, and which I mistakenly kept referring to as In the Realms of the Senses In the Realms of the Unreal and my slip of the tongue should not be forgiven. (The film was reviewed semi-favourably in the last issue of Cinema Scope In the Realms of the Unreal The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What Is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion Adventures in Chicago In the Realms In the Realms of the Unreal Errata Youth Experience , to cite rather recent examples. Books like Speak, Memory Speak, Memory , eclipsed by an abiding precociousness in the throes of self-creation. The telling is too clean, too predicated, too assured. Self-doubt is coloured in self-doubt, clothed in it, but not endured. There is madness in this greatness and it fights with time, against the expiration of consciousness, not existence. Funny that. The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, ... as caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. The story recounts the wars between nations on an enormous and unnamed planet, of which Earth is a moon. The conflict is provoked by the Glandelinians, who practice child enslavement. After hundreds of ferocious battles, the good Christian nation of Abbiennia forces the 'haughty' Glandelinians to give up their barbarous ways. The heroines of Darger's history are the seven Vivian sisters, Abbiennian princesses. They are aided in their struggles by a panoply of heroes, who are sometimes the author's alter-egos. The battles are full of vivid incident: charging armies, ominous captures, alarms and explosions, the appearances of demons and dragons. Details within.

Who'll save the poor little girl? Henry.

Who'll trace the lines of her mouth? Henry. Who will conquer foreign worlds searching for the stolen girls? Princesses you'll never fear the patron saint of girls is here! Who will draw the cavalry in and risk his very own precious skin To make our Angelinia a free and beautiful land again? Henry. Who'll love a poor orphan child, Henry Darger, lost, growing savage and wild? Henry. If you find some error in Henry Darger Lyrics would you please submit your corrections to me? Thank You. His mother died giving birth to a baby sister when Darger was three years old, and the girl was put up for adoption. Until he was eight years old, Darger attended Catholic school and lived with his father, a tailor. But, stricken with debilitating problems with his legs, the elder Darger was admitted to a poor house and his son sent to a boy’s home. Accounts of this place reveal deplorable conditions, rife with stories of neglect and mistreatment. Through all of this, Darger kept in contact with his father, but his death in 1907 instigated a period of profound depression for Darger. He remained in the asylum until he ran away in his late teens, returning to Chicago where he found a janitorial job with the help of a relative.

Posted by David on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at 11:34 AM. A couple of months ago I was listening to Natalie Merchant's album Motherland , and for the first time I really heard the lyrics of a song called The Ballad of Henry Darger Who'll save the poor little girl? Henry Darger.
Who'll save the poor little girl? Henry. Who'll tell the story of her? Henry Darger.
Who'll tell it to all the world? Henry. Who'll buy the carbon paper now? Henry Darger.
Who'll trace the lines of her mouth? Henry. "Who the heck is she singing about," I wondered, and tracked down Matthew Michael's excellent site about Henry Darger (OK, so I typed "Henry Darger" in Google and it was the first hit. It did take a bit of effort, really) From the introduction to the site: Henry Darger died in 1973 in a Catholic mission operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor. He was buried in a paupers' cemetery. He had no family or friends. The neighbors in his north Chicago apartment building remembered him as an odd, unkempt man who scavenged through garbage cans and talked to himself in numerous voices. He attended mass every day, often several times a day, but otherwise led an entirely solitary life. Unknown to his neighbors, and to everyone, Darger had been creating and compiling a massive literary and graphic body of work since 1909. If Darger's landlord, photographer Nathan Lerner, had not sorted through the collection of scavenged debris in his apartment following his death, Darger's writings and paintings certainly would have been lost.

    Henry Darger: Disasters Of War
Essay by Klaus Biesenbach. Interview by Kiyoko Lerner.
Henry Darger spent his life working as a janitor in Catholic hospitals, living alone in a rented room on Chicago's north side, attending Mass up to five times a day, and writing a picaresque tale in 15 massive volumes, composed of 145 handwritten pages and 5,084 single-spaced typed pages, and titled The Story of the Vivian Girls, in what is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. To accompany this enormous literary production, Darger also created several hundred large-scale illustrationspencil on paper drawings painted over with watercolor and occasional additions of collagethat relate the story: On an unnamed planet, of which Earth is a moon, the good Christian nation of Anniennia wars with the Glandelinians, who practice child enslavement. The heroines are the seven Vivian sisters, Abbiennian princesses, who, after many battles, fires, tempests, and lurid torture, succeed in forcing the Glandelinians to give up their barbarous ways. The Disasters of War offers an affordable introduction to Darger's astonishing outsider oeuvre. It explains the technique, diligence, and creativity of the works, illustrates details, and features a conversation between the Darger estate holder and the Kunstwerke's curator. A selection of 12 previously unpublished excerpts from
