The Unrequited Henry Darger by E. Tage Larsen This is neither politically fey Narnia, nor tawny, cobble-road delusion. Certainly this is no rabbit-holed excursion, and there's no moral at the end. What I invoke, albeit circumspectly, are the tenets of children's book folklore. They are the gateways and postscripts which make adventures into the unknown a little more comfortable. Unfortunately, there is no clever transition into the otherworld of outsider artist Henry Darger, in fact you aren't even invited. This Henry Darger retrospective at Museum of American Folk Art is the most obsessively perverse act of genius currently swingin' under the big top. My introduction to Outsider Art was through the virtue and great patience of a collector friend in Salt Lake City, Utah. Outsider Art is a blanket term used to imply unschooled artists who's particular psychosis is the catalyst to brilliance. Salt Lake City, under the rule of the Church of Jesus Christ and Later-Day Saints, certainly brandishing its own aberrance, attracts a lot of oddball allegiances to counter-act the religious zeal. During the 80's, my tenure there, I was surprised how much of the fringe element stopped through on its way to everywhere else. That I've spent the 90's being anywhere but Salt Lake City, I take it as no small irony that my reintroduction to Outsider Art should appear to me in the form of the Henry Darger exhibition at the Museum of American Folk Art, located across from Lincoln Center, on 65th and Columbus, sharing the building with the only New York City ward of the Church of Jesus Christ and Later-Day Saints.

His body of work consists of a 15,000 page manuscript and well as several hundred large-scale watercolor and collage accompanying illustrations to his epic tale "The Story Darger was a recluse who lived through a troubled childhood in Chicago Illinois. He spent what money he made on copies and enlargements of magazine clippings which he would later trace on paper and afterwards join the panels together to form large horizontal panels, coloring them with watercolor. His landlord discovered Darger’s work shortly before he passed away. In 2000 the American Folk Art Museum in New York City established the Henry Darger Study Centre "to foster open inquiry and multidisciplinary research into the life and work of the Chicago artist". Darger's work is a highly complex hybrid of a nearly incomprehensible narrative revolving around an apocalyptic war between young girls and an army of brutal soldiers. Their upcoming exhibit on Darger looks really amazing. It's opens this weekend, and will be on display from January 18th to June 28th. Below is from the press realease for the show. In the making for nearly eight years, the Henry Darger Room Collection will be unveiled in the Study Center Gallery. Through a gift of Kiyoko Lerner, owner of the building and Darger's landlord (with her husband, Nathan Lerner), Intuit acquired many of Henry Darger's personal belongings as well as actual architectural elements from his one-room apartment in Lincoln Park. Included in the permanent installation are his furniture, Remington typewriter, and hundreds of other objects. In conjunction with the opening of the Henry Darger Room Collection, Intuit will present the Henry Darger Exhibition, an exhibition of 11 collage watercolors by Henry Darger on display until June 28. Curators' Tour On Saturday, February 16, from 2-3pm, Jessica Moss and Lisa Stone will present a curators' tour of the Henry Darger Room Collection. This is a free event, open to the public - please arrive early.

Henry was not a commercially ambitious artist, but he was a prolific one and he was obsessed with illustrating and writing "The Story of the Vivian Girls, in what is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion". He did mural sized scrolls, often painting on both sides to save money. They were intricate and detailed and very complicated. Psychologically, these painted drawings must have been art therapy for a man who was working through a deeply wounded, orphaned childhood. Something about him reminds me of Morton Bartlett , although Morton was educated and did not live in a cramped room full of scraps. But, they were both reclusive and alone as adults, and they were both orphaned at a young age. Both created "art families" for themselves - images of children.

Ron Mueck: In Bed Listed below are The Andy Warhol Museum's special exhibitions - Current, Future and Past Current Exhibitions Ron Mueck at The Andy Warhol Museum December 12, 2007 through March 30, 2008 The exhibition, Ron Mueck at The Andy Warhol Museum features seven of the artist’s realistic human sculptures including: In Bed (2005) a giant sculpture of a woman lying in bed; A Girl (2006), a vast sculpture of a newborn baby; Wild Man (2005), a nine-foot sculpture of a naked, bearded man; Spooning Couple (2005), a miniature sculpture of a couple lying together on a bed; Man in a Boat (2002) a naked man sitting in a life-size wooden rowing boat; Ron Mueck’s self-portrait, Mask II (2001-2002); and Mask III (2005), a large portrait of a black woman. Mueck was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1958, to parents of German descent. He often made toys as a child and this hobby became his profession. He began his career in Australia as a puppet-maker, creating marionettes for children’s television. In 1986 he moved to the USA and worked in the film industry before moving to London where he set up his own model-making business. Mueck’s fine art career began in 1996 when Paula Rego asked him to make a sculpture of Pinocchio as a model for a series of Disney-inspired paintings she was making for the exhibition Spellbound: Art and Film at the Hayward Gallery in London. The sculpture was exhibited alongside Rego’s paintings and it caught the attention of Charles Saatchi who commissioned Mueck to make a group of works for his collection. His major claim to fame is a 15,143-page fantasy manuscript called The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion, along with several hundred watercolor paintings and other drawings illustrating the story. Darger's work has become one of the most notable examples of outsider art. (text taken from Wikipedia) His art has influenced some of today's music scene as well: -The cover art of the 2005 Animal Collective album Feels. -Sufjan Steven's album of outtakes from Illinois, entitled The Avalanche, includes a song entitled "The Vivian Girls Are Visited in the Night by Saint Dargarius and His Squadron of Benevolent Butterflies." -"Lost Girls," a song by Tilly and the Wall, is based on Darger's work.
