The painter Richard Dadd (1817-1886) is chiefly remembered for the two extraordinarily-detailed masterpieces he painted during his incarceration in Bethlem Hospital: Contradiction. Oberon and Titania (1854-8), and ca. Beginning in 1853, Dadd painted a series of about thirty watercolours under the collective title Sketches to Illustrate the Passions , each one focussing on a single virtue, vice, or state-of-mind. Subjects for the sketches included love, hatred , jealousy, treachery, idleness, brutality, raving madness , and melancholy (pictured above). The quality of these compositions varies widely: some seem weirdly stilted, others are straightforwardly naturalistic. Of the oil-paintings from this period, Potrait of a Man Among the independent watercolours Dadd executed during his Bethlem years, his Sketch of an idea for Crazy Jane The year 1860 saw Dadd complete two more minor masterpieces in oils: Negation (for which, alas, I could not find a good-quality colour image), and Mother and Child madonna Bacchanalian Scene . This could almost be a detail from Each man then has his own unlucky fate both here and beyond - like must be added to like, and ones due paid to the appointed spirit.

Fantastic Metropolis
Richard Dadd in Bedlam
By Alan Wall Fiction Reprints Page All Italy, Greece, Turkey. In Bodrum we visited the castle of St Peter and there sketched marble fragments from the tomb of Mausolus. See how antiquity can survive through the motions of one hand and eye. By now the sun would fall out of the sky in the evening, and was buried in the sea in minutes. Thence to Lycia, Cyprus, Beirut, Syria, Palestine. In Safed an old Jew was bent almost double in the synagogue, pondering the Kabbalistic mysteries and mumbling his litanies as though the years meant nothing, as though the years were no more than grains of dust gathering on his sandals. Tribesmen surrounded us in Jericho, one with a beard so infernally black, it would have made a hundred fine stiff brushes. Our dragoman dispelled their heat with a cascade of words. From Jaffa to Alexandria we were given passage on a ship named Hecate. How fearsome can the rage of the atoms be? My father taught chemistry like one who has unlocked the secret room, like the high priest entering the Holy of Holies. (Moses owed everything to the Egyptians. Before Yahweh ever was, Osiris is). I travelled alone back to London.

Richard Dadd (1817-1886)
Best known for his fairy pictures and the sad circumstances of his life, the artist Richard Dadd grew up in Chatham on the Medway, going to school at Rochester ( on these pages for its artistic interest ). Many of his family were involved with shipbuilding, and Dadd's early interests were ships and sketching the landscape around where he lived - Rochester Castle appears in the background of some of his pictures. He studied at the Royal Academy, where he came under the influence of painters such as Etty Maclise , Mulready and Henry Howard, and began to paint fairy subjects from Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'The Tempest', as well as increasingly his own subjects. He was also a member of the group of artists known as the Clique. In 1842, Dadd went on a 10 month trip with a wealthy lawyer, Sir Thomas Phillips, to draw his journey as he travelled through Europe and the Near and Middle East, and while on this trip he began to suffer headaches and delusions. Eventually, feeling himself to be under the command of the Egyptian god Osiris, he returned to England, murdered his father, and escaped to France, before being captured and sent to the London lunatic asylum of Bethlem Hospital in 1844. He was kept there for 20 years before being transferred to Broadmoor Asylum in Berkshire, where he was to live out the remainder of his life. Dadd's most important pictures were The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke and Contradiction, Oberon and Titania

ichard Dadd was born August 1, 1817 in Chatham, Kent, England. At age 13 the family moved to London, and in 1837, Dadd, age 20, was admitted to the Royal Academy of Art. Dadd showed talent at the Academy and gathered a number of painterly friends, known collectively as 'The Clique'. He won several awards while at the Academy, and began exhibiting his work during his first year.
In 1841, he received a commission to do the woodblock illustrations for a book called the Book of British Ballads, as well as an oil painting called Titania Sleeping, which is perhaps the best example of his early work. Overall, his style was not particularly remarkable, no more so than any other moderately gifted painter in Victorian England during the stylistic phase now referred to as "The Fairy School". [...]
In June 1842, Dadd and his patron, Sir Thomas Phillips, left England to travel extensively in the Middle East and Europe. Things were going well until Dadd, in Egypt, encountered a group of old Arab men smoking a "hubbly-bubbly", an arabic style waterpipe. Dadd joined them, and according to his later claims, spent five continuous days and nights smoking. Though the men never spoke, Dadd became convinced that the sound of the bubbling pipe was actually a form of communication. By the fifth day, he had deciphered a message, which he claimed was from the Ancient Egyptian god Osiris. (You may want to note that in Egyptian mythology, Osiris is killed and dismembered by his brother.)
