: Richard Dadd Biography:
Richard Dadd was born into a large family of a chemist and a druggist in 1817. He began his training at the age of thirteen studying miniature painting, portraiture, and landscapes. He was prematurely accepted to study at the Royal Academy, but had to wait until he turned twenty. Dadd painted ancient subjects in the Neoclassical style that were executed in a style similar to that of Lawrence Alma Tadema. Dadd left England in 1842 to take a yearlong drawing trip throughout Europe and the Middle East. After returning, he began suffering from mental illness, murdered his father, and conspired to kill the pope and the emperor of Austria. He claimed that the Egyptian god, Osiris, requested all of these acts. Dadd was committed to an asylum by his family and the courts in 1843 and remained there for his last forty-three years.

Click here for audio of Episode 911. Today, an English artist's madness raises questions about creativity. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. R ichard Dadd was mad, insane. That word is out of fashion these days, but Dadd was mad, even by today's forgiving standards. Dadd was born in 1817. At the age of 26, already an established painter, he took a long trip through Europe and the Mid-East. He came back unbalanced. His family took him to a doctor who dealt in mental illness and its legal implications. Dadd, he said, was dangerous and no longer responsible for his actions. Just a few days later, as if on cue, Dadd murdered his father. He fled to Paris and there he attacked a perfect stranger. He was caught and shipped back to England. He spent the rest of his life in asylums. He finally died in one when he was 69.

The alternate realities of Richard Dadd:
Richard Dadd was a promising artist who was admitted to the Royal Academy of Art in 1837. A decade later, Dadd was a patient in Bethlem psychiatric hospital after experiencing an intense psychosis , but was still to create the greatest of his works. Dadd first started experiencing the beginings of psychosis when travelling in Egypt. He believed that the sound of the traditional Egyptian "hubbly bubblies" contained messages to him from the god Osiris. Back in England, the artist became one of the rare examples of people who become violent when psychotic, killing his father with a razor. After fleeing from the authorities he was detained after attempting to attack a tourist in Paris. On return to London, he was comitted to Bethlem Hospital for 20 years, before being moved to Broadmoor Hospital where he lived for the rest of his life. When in hospital he continued to paint, and created some of the most important and fantastical paintings of the Victorian era. The most famous

A condensed excerpt from: The Christie's Sale Catalogue 1992 Richard Dadd is a unique phenomenon in British art, perhaps in Western art in general. A fairly late product of the Romantic Movement, he gave a new dimension to Romanticism's determined pursuit of the irrational. Insane for nearly two thirds of his life, he was able, like a traveller with tales of a fabulous country, to send back reports of his mental terra incognita thanks to the miraculous preservation of his talent under the condition of his madness.

Richard Dadd
On several pages scattered across the 'Net, one can find this passage: Richard Dadd was an English artist of the late nineteenth century, known for his fantastic subjects. He went mad. This seems to be the sum total of the common view of the Victorian painter Richard Dadd, and it does not do him justice. Today, he is known chiefly for a few tremendously evocative fairy paintings, including The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke , (which occasioned a song by Queen ), and for having murdered his father. Yet Dadd was held to be a painter of great talent in his own time, has since demonstrated his status as a minor Victorian master, and is one of the most intrinsically interesting painters of the last two hundred years, in large part because of the unique features of his work. Although there are a number of sites on the Web that mention Dadd in one context or another, none offers a view of Dadd the historical figure and Victorian painter. This site exists for that purpose.

Richard Dadd was born August 1, 1817 in Chatham, Kent, England. At age 13 the family moved to London, and in 1837, Dadd, age 20, was admitted to the Royal Academy of Art. Dadd showed talent at the Academy and gathered a number of painterly friends, known collectively as 'The Clique'. He won several awards while at the Academy, and began exhibiting his work during his first year. In 1841, he received a commission to do the woodblock illustrations for a book called the Book of British Ballads , as well as an oil painting called Titania Sleeping , which is perhaps the best example of his early work. Overall, his style was not particularly remarkable, no more so than any other moderately gifted painter in Victorian England during the stylistic phase now referred to as "The Fairy School". The Victorians were obsessed with fairy lore, and much of the art of this period reflects this. Their fascination can be attributed to several things, chief among them perhaps being the effort to rediscover their folkloric past; an emergent spiritualist movement, as witnessed by the founding and flourishing of such groups as the

Biography
Richard Dadd is recognised as one of the most individual of English painters. The story of his sad life is now quite familiar: he was born in Chatham in Kent. After a routine art training at the Royal Academy Schools he entered upon his career as an artist in the circle of painters known as The Clique. In the years 1842-43 he travelled to the Middle East and Greece with Sir Thomas Phillips. On his return from this trip he suffered a bout of insanity in the course of which he murdered his father. For the rest of his life Dadd was confined in the asylums of Bethlem and Broadmoor, in which latter place he died in 1887. Dadd's painting progresses in the course of his career from a conventional style derived from his senior contemporary Daniel Maclise to a manner of painting of frenzied invention and obsessive and minutely-observed detail, which, fascinating and beautiful as it is, must be seen in the context of Dadd's mania. The two masterpieces of this last phase, which are amongst the most compelling works of art of any age, are Contradiction: Oberon and Titania (private collection, U.S.A.) and
