19th Century American painting
Little of this chapter in art history is on show in European museums. American painting sprang from a strong British mould in the colonial period of the 18th century, and took shape in the wake of the Declaration of Independence as a school with characteristics of its own. Its particular treatment of Romanticism with nationalist connotations was best portrayed in landscape painting. American landscape painting exalted nature, depicting America's geography as a new Garden of Eden.

FAILURE TO ACHIEVE HIS OWN GOALS The above quoted text comes straight from Rep. Fossella's bio page on his Congressional website. You will notice five areas where Fossella is "leading efforts" to achieve these goals. He follows those with a pat on his own back tooting his legislative initiatives. However now in his tenth year in Congress Fossella apparently has only lead initiatives in one of the five areas, reducing taxes. It is unclear why after ten years he has yet to successfully introduce any legislation on the other four areas that are listed as 'priorities.' [ link

Crops
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus Medical Idioms Wikipedia 0.04 sec. write_ads(AdsNum, 0) Commodities produced from the earth which are planted, raised, and gathered within the course of a single season. Crops might be produced either naturally or under cultivation. This distinction becomes important when determining whether a crop is to be sold as Personal Property or as real estate, and also in terms of how crops are to be devised. Fructus naturales are crops that are produced by the powers of nature alone, without any harvesting methods. They include fruit trees, berries growing on bushes, and hay growing spontaneously from perennial roots. They are considered real property when they are not severed from the land, but personal property when severed. Fructus industriales , or emblements, are annual crops that are raised by yearly labor and owe their existence to human intervention and cultivation. Such crops include wheat, corn, and vegetables. Authorities differ as to whether they constitute real or personal property.

Jasper Cropsey was born on his father’s farm in Rossville, Staten Island on February 18, 1823. As a young boy, Cropsey had recurring periods of poor health. During these periods, while absent from school, Cropsey taught himself to draw. His early drawings were architectural sketches and landscapes drawn on notepads and in the margins of his schoolbooks.
Cropsey Farm, Staten Island
His artistic skills improved rapidly as Jasper mimicked whatever paintings, drawings, and architectural renderings he could find. At the age of fourteen, Cropsey entered an architectural model in a contest and won a diploma from the 1837 Mechanics Institute of New York fair. Soon Jasper Cropsey began a five-year apprenticeship for Joseph Trench, architect. Trench realized young Jasper’s artistic ability and provided him with studio space and art supplies in order to develop his artistic skills. Jasper took advantage of Trench’s encouragement and sketched and painted whenever he could. Cropsey mostly painted landscapes, copied from engravings of Claude Lorrain and other landscape artists. Hudson River School Trilogy: A Focused Collection; Drawings From Dia; Selections from the Permanent Collection , to be shown August 17-October 21 at the Art Center. The extensive Hudson River School works that have been collected by Alvin Friedman and his wife Maryann (Vassar class of 1955) will comprise the first gallery of the exhibition. The second gallery will feature works from the original Vassar collection, purchased by Matthew Vassar from the Reverend Elias Lyman Magoon. Finally, selected Hudson River School drawings by masters such as John Frederick Kensett and Aaron Draper Shattuck, currently on long-term loan to Vassar from the Dia Art Foundation, will fill a third gallery. "The effect of the combination of these three collections is a form of triangulation that sheds light on the broad appeal of the Hudson River School to very different personalities separated by time, vocation, and purpose," said James Mundy, director of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, and curator of the exhibition. "We see how a nineteenth century minister, a lawyer, and an artist from today have all turned to the accessible, yet sublime, imagery of the Hudson River School painters for solace, inspiration, and insight."
