High School Specifics The Artists Jasper Francis Cropsey Cropsey visited Europe and upon his return traveled in America, visiting the Hudson Valley, Vermont, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Niagara Falls. Although he worked mainly on American landscapes and scenes from his European journey, he also painted literary and allegorical scenes. Cropsey died in 1900 at age 77. Over the course of his lifetime, the art world had changed so much that he died in near anonymity. The artist had already gained favorable notice at the Royal Academy with an earlier White Mountain view (An Indian Summer Morning in the White Mountains ) and in light of his success, he may have planned a complementary scene of the same region in winter. The painting is small, and if Cropsey completed a larger version, it was not exhibited. The artist nevertheless continued to depict White Mountain subjects while in England.

The Baron began to acquire nineteenth-century American art in the 1960's and he is the first European collector to display such an intense interest in the period. His acquisitions in this area have been determined by the purely aesthetic value of these paintings as well as by his continued interest in American culture. The works document American landscape painting from the Hudson River school of the 1820's to the final years of the nineteenth century. Exercise on the Hudson River School of Painters Background: The Hudson River School was a prominent school of American landscape artists, during the mid-19th century. Many of the artists whose works belong to this school began life as engravers or technical craftspeople. Prior to the Civil War, their works sold very well and one might assume that this reflected an interest, at least with respect to the wealthy, towards the natural, untouched environment. Towards the latter part of the century, with the ascendency of impressionism, artists came to value technique more and the general public and critics found fault with the realism of landscape painting and the school went into decline. His lush allegorical landscape, The Spirit of Peace, Cropsey’s expansive imaginative view is given added power through his attention to details from the real world. His use of color evokes a warm, gentle atmosphere, and the effect of the setting sun suggests restfulness and calm. His witten description of the picture pointed out the symbols of peace including the circular temple, a sculptural group of a lion, lamb and child, and the temple’s frieze illustrating scenes from the life of Christ, described as "the highest advocate of Peace." Cropsey Question With further checking, it is the American Autumn, Starrucca Valley; signed by J. F.Cropsey 1865. It is 40 x 24, color has faded with some still around the edges, smooth surface and it is attached to a backing material about 1/4 inch thick. My grandfather purchased it from a dealer, who also sold paintings and prints to other including the Dow family, about 40-50 years ago. I am in Midland, Michigan and there are many places he could have purchased it from, he just doesn't remember. It looks like a lithograph, but I am not sure. Thanks for your help
