Walter Crane was born in Liverpool on 15th August, 1845. Walter's father, Thomas Crane, was a moderately successful artist. In 1851 the family moved to London with the hope that this would provide Crane with more clients. Unfortunately, just as business was improving, Thomas Crane died.
Soon after his father's death Walter Crane obtained an apprenticeship at William Linton's engraving shop. William Linton had been a member of the Chartist movement in the 1840s and his stories of the struggle for parliamentary reform, had an important influence on Crane's early political development.
Linton was impressed by the quality of Crane's work and helped to find him commissions. This included providing the illustrations for J. R. Wise's book on the New Forest. Crane went to live with Wise for six weeks while he was working on the pictures. J. R. Wise had radical political and religious opinions and introduced Crane to the work of John Stuart Mill Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Ruskin

English illustrator, painter, and designer. The son of a portrait painter, he studied Italian Old Masters and Japanese prints. He achieved international popularity designing Art Nouveau textiles and wallpapers but is chiefly known for his illustrations of children's books. In 1894 he worked with William Morris on The Story of the Glittering Plain , a book printed in the style of 16th-century German and Italian woodcuts. Biography Secondary Sources Works by Walter Crane Illustration of Buckle My Shoe ... Illustration of Flowers Photo of Walter Crane. Source: Engen, Rodney. Walter Crane as a Book Illustrator . London: Academy Editions; New York: St. Martin's, 1975. alter Crane, multifaceted artist of the late nineteenth century, was one of the best-loved children's illustrators of his day. Although he often painted in oils and displayed his easel paintings in galleries and at exhibitions, Crane's paintings never achieved the monumental success and public recognition of his illustrative work. Today, just as in his own time, Walter Crane is recognized as one of the greatest and most innovative of all children's book illustrators. Born in Liverpool in 1845, Walter Crane was the son of portrait painter, miniaturist, and lithographer Thomas Crane. Shortly after Walter's birth, Thomas' poor health forced the Crane family to move to Torquay, a seaside health resort in the rural county of Devon. This move was perhaps fortunate for Walter, who noted later in life that his love of landscapes and of the sea was the result of spending his early childhood in this idyllic place. Walter Crane's formal education was minimal. Apart from nursery school, some tutoring by governesses and a brief period spent as a student at a small local school in Torquay, Walter's sensitive nerves and the financial situation of his middle-class family combined to limit his schooling. In 1857 the family moved to London, where some halfhearted attempts were made at locating a school for Walter and his brother Tom. Nothing ever came of these efforts, and Walter's school days were ended. Young Walter's real education took place in his father's studio, where he could browse through illustrated books and journals as he developed his natural talent for drawing. He practiced by sketching the hands and faces of Thomas Crane's portrait commissions. Soon, guided by his father, Walter began painting in oils and designing illustrations for stories and poetry.

Walter Crane (1845-1915)
Walter Crane was born in Liverpool on 15 August 1845. He spent his youth on the south coast and in London, and was apprenticed to W. J. Linton , the engraver. Crane's first painting at the Royal Academy was The Lady of Shalott In 1888 Crane was instrumental in the establishment of the Art and Crafts Exhibition Society, of which he was the first President. The object of the body was to assist in the revival of arts and handicrafts currently occurring, and to draw attention to the craftsmen involved. William Morris Edward Burne-Jones , Lewis F. Day, Heywood Sumner , Philip Webb and Onslow Ford were included in the founding members of the Society. He was appointed part time Director of Design at the Manchester School of Art from 1893-6 and Principal of the Royal College of Art from 1897-8, continuing to be a member of the governing council of that body thereafter and a strong supporter of Government-sponsored art education. He wrote important books on decoration and design, including The Decorative Illustration of Books (1896) and Line and Form (1900). Crane defined design in terms of ornament, the aim being 'ideal beauty rather than literal fact'. Regarding book illustration, he had much to say on the integration of pictures with text. For example, he noted the difference between an easel painting, complete in itself, where the frame is a boundary isolating it from the surroundings, as compared to a decorative design, which must relate to its surroundings:

Walter Crane
Walter Crane was an English artist, part of the Arts and Crafts movement. He produced portrait paintings, illustrations, children's books, ceramic tiles and other decorative arts. Crane is considered today as one of the most important children's book illustrators as well as miniaturist, influential designer and socialist artist.
Walter Crane was the second son of Thomas Crane, born in Liverpool 1845. His family moved to London in 1857. There he became learner of the famous wood engraver William James Linton. There Crane had become interested in politics and in the 1860s he began to be active.
He early came under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was a diligent student of John Ruskin. A set of coloured page designs to illustrate Tennyson's "Lady of Shalott" gained the approval of wood-engraver William James Linton to whom Walter Crane was apprenticed for three years (1859-1862). As a wood-engraver he had abundant opportunity for the minute study of the contemporary artists whose work passed through his hands, of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, Sir John Tenniel and Frederick Sandys, and of the masters of the Italian Renaissance, but he was more influenced by the Elgin marbles in the British Museum. A further and important element in the development of his talent was the study of Japanese colour-prints, the methods of which he imitated in a series of toy-books, which started a new fashion.
In 1881 Crane became close friend with William Morris. They both deplored the effects of modern manufacturing and the commercial system of craftsmanship and design.Crane became involved in the establishment of the Art and Crafts Exhibition Society.

Wa1ter Crane (1845 - 1915)
This slide shows a totally designed cover of one of the Toy Books, which also advertises other books in the series, printed on yellow paper. Children are represented as young birds, and Crane may be poking fun at himself as "the Academician of the Nursery" (though nothing apparently irritated him more than hearing people say this). Like the Japanese artists whose work he admired, Crane adopted a rebus for his signature, a symbol of a crane. By this time (1875) Crane had become famous and his name was an incentive to buy the book.
A page from Baby's Own Alphabet (1875) which shows how Crane sought a design of ordered spacings and graphic patterns to illustrate the alphabet.
The cover of another Toy Book, Goody Two Shoes, (1874). The symbolic golden fruit on the tree also advertise other books in the series.
A double page spread from Goody Two Shoes which shows Crane's mixture of styles - Renaissance costumes and thatch-roofed cottages in an eighteenth-century English village setting. Because Margery Meanwell has befriended several animals (note the birds on her shoulders) she is believed to be a witch. Crane's humor is evident in his depiction of Gaffer Goosecap, a wiseacre sent to find out evidence against her.
This illustration for the nursery rhyme, "This little pig," shows many of Crane's personal trademarks -strong outline and clear bright colors. The simplicity of line and flatness of form also give this design a unique quality, which Crane used in his later work. The frontal position of the piglets and distorted floor space again recall the Japanese method of pictorial space and design, which is consistent with his theories about the child reader.
