Gustave Courbet
Gustave Courbet, Peintre francais,

Courbet and the Realist Revolution
In 1848 the young French painter Gustave Courbet Le R©alisme . The accompanying exhibition catalog he titled “Realist Manifesto”, a brochure that helped initiate the coming revolution in painting, Impressionism . Every working artist should embrace Courbet’s exemplary spirit of defiance, because while art has changed… certain dynamics have not. We have a new entrenched art establishment that is every bit as elitist and distant from the people as the officials Courbet faced in his day. It is time to pitch our own tents in front of the edifices of the postmodern to announce the return of the painters. To learn more about Gustave Courbet, I highly recommend T. J. Courbet's devotion to faithfully expressing reality produced many works which were not highly rated by the critics of the day. This even includes Burial at Ornans, considered today as a masterpiece, which was rejected from the 1855 World Exposition in Paris. It is said that, at the time, he stated, “When I stop being criticized, my own existence ceases to have importance!” These works are filled with an atmosphere of beauty and elegance, which comes from having only the truth present.

Ever since I retired, I started booking ahead of time, which gets rid of the queueing problem, but not of the crowds that decide to go to the same exhibition as me. How dare they?
Now this gets even worse in small museums. I recently went to Mus©e du Luxembourg where they had a wonderful Arcimboldo exhibition (wrote about it and grumbled a lot on my French blog ) but last Friday, was different: I went to the great Gustave Courbet retrospective at the Galeries du Grand Palais and really loved it.
Grand Palais
is a large place, and as the exhibition had only opened a few days before, it was not too crowded. Courbet au Grand Palais For some reason, most probably because I am an ignoramus where art is concerned, I hardly knew any paintings by Courbet except the famous Origine du Monde , and Les Demoiselles du Bord de Seine.

Working in a dark palette and a rough style that opposed the standard convention of Salon finish, Courbet rejected the established artist's repertoire drawn from history and mythology. He preferred subjects that recorded his own experience: the working people of his native village Ornans and scenes of his life as an artist.
Courbet became an outspoken advocate of "realism," a modern approach that was frank in style and unsentimental in expression. The links below will take you to paintings of wonderful seascapes by Gustave Courbet found in this article.

He went to Paris about 1840, ostensibly to study law; instead, he taught himself to paint by copying masterpieces in the Louvre . In 1850 he exhibited The Stone Breakers (1849, formerly Gem¤ldegalerie, Dresden, destroyed 1945), a blunt, forthright depiction of laborers repairing a road. In it, Courbet deliberately flouted the precepts of the romantics—champions of emotionally charged exoticism—and of the powerful academics—guardians of the moralizing Beaux-Arts traditions. He further outraged them with his enormous Burial at OrnanÅ¡ (1850, Mus©e d'Orsay, Paris), in which a frieze of poorly clad peasants surrounds a yawning grave. Courbet compounded his defiance of convention in another huge painting
