Jean D©sir© Gustave Courbet 10 June 31 December ) was a French painter who led the Realist movement in 19th-century French painting. I am fifty years old and I have always lived in freedom; let me end my life free; when I am dead let this be said of me: 'He belonged to no school, to no church, to no institution, to no academy, least of all to any r©gime except the r©gime of liberty.'

Best known as an innovator in Realism (and credited with coining the term), Courbet was a painter of figurative compositions, landscapes and seascapes. He also worked with social issues, and addressed peasantry and the grave working conditions of the poor. His work belonged neither to the predominant Romantic nor Neoclassical schools. Rather, Courbet believed the Realist artist's mission was the pursuit of truth, which would help erase social contradictions and imbalances.

Gustave Courbet (1819 - 1877) Gustave Courbet was born to a prosperous farming family in Ornans, France. In 1841 he went to Paris to study law, but he soon decided to study painting and learned by copying the pictures of master artists. In 1844 he exhibited his self-portrait, Coubet with a Black Dog. Courbet's realism and truthfully portrayal of ordinary places and people went againts the taste of Art critics and the public who were accustomed to pretty pictures that made life look better than it was. When his painting, The Artist's Studio, was refused for an important exhibition, he displayed his work himself near the exhibition hall.

    Birth Year : 1819
Death Year : 1877 Country : France Gustave Courbet was born in Ornans in the Franche-Comté, the son of a comfortable family that was half peasant, half bourgeois, and very proud of its revolutionary ancestry. Courbet, a handsome young man, went to Paris in 1840 to study art, taking almost no instruction but working in the Louvre and from models. He began as a Romantic, seeing himself in early self-portraits as a rather Byronic figure. The Revolution of 1848 swept away the last vestiges of Courbet's romantic tendencies and he became a realist. As such, he was able to paint only what he saw in the world around him and the simple life of plain people. By 1849 such naturalistic works as The Stone Breakers (destroyed in 1945 in the bombing of Dresden) indicated by their subject matter and treatment that he had answered Baudelaire's plea for paintings that expressed "the heroism of modern life." Courbet's own life was fairly heroic: as an artist, he was both greatly admired and greatly detested. As a man, he was imprisoned for his part in the Commune uprising of 1871, spent six months in prison, and then went to live in exile in Switzerland where he died, still owing the French government a large sum charged to him for the destruction of the Vendome column. Throughout his life he fought with both government authorities and public taste but continued to paint as he pleased, for as

    View at Ornans
In this realist painting of rural life the rich, dense greens of the landscape contrast starkly with the luminosity of the sky. To the left are some of the houses of Ornans, Courbet's home-town in the Jura, not far from the Swiss border, and at the bottom right hay is being gathered in. As this is principally a landscape the human activity in it (the hay-making) is subordinate. Nevertheless, in a painting by Courbet it cannot fail to remind us of his preoccupation with the ordinary activities of life as a prime subject for art, a preoccupation not shared by the art establishment of his day.
    Gustave Courbet
As far as painting is concerned Courbet became the central figure of the 19th century Realist Movement. He described his work as a record of "the manners, ideals and aspect of the age as he himself saw it". In other words, he chose to record the real, contemporary world as he understood it, painted in his own personal style. He placed special emphasis on the ordinary routine of day-to-day rural and urban life.

    Courbet, Gustave
Courbet, Gustave (1819-77). The painter Courbet started and dominated the French movement toward realism . Art critics and the public were accustomed to pretty pictures that made life look better than it was. Courbet, against much opposition, truthfully portrayed ordinary places and people. Gustave Courbet was born on June 10, 1819, to a prosperous farming family in Ornans, France. He went to Paris in 1841, supposedly to study law, but he soon decided to study painting and learned by copying the pictures of master artists. In 1844 his self-portrait, Courbet with a Black Dog , was accepted by the Salon, an annual public exhibition of art sponsored by the influential Royal Academy. In 1848 a political revolution in France foreshadowed a revolution in art, as people in the arts became more open to new ideas. Courbet's early work was exhibited successfully in 1849. That same year he visited his family in the countryside and produced one of his greatest paintings, The Stone-Breakers , followed by Burial at Ornans in 1850. Both were quite unlike the romantic pictures of the day because they showed peasants in realistic settings instead of the rich in glamorized situations. In 1855 he completed a huge canvas

See also: Impressionism VIEW IMAGE LIST "In a letter written to a friend in 1850, Gustave Courbet announced that "in our so very civilized society it is necessary for me to live the life of a savage. I must be free even of governments. The people have my sympathies, I must address myself to them directly." These words shed considerable light on Courbet's art - and not just because Courbet's subjects aren't always the predictable, socially acceptable ones. There's something direct and even savage (if by that we mean unconventional) in the way Courbet attacks the canvas: in the way he sponges or scrapes the paint, juxtaposes areas that are more or less realistically handled, and frames or arranges figures and objects in unexpected ways. Rembrandt and Chardin - conservative, too. "In Brooklyn Courbet's paintings were hung intelligently, in thematic groupings that extended their meanings. Despite regrettable absences, there was a sense that the works had been chosen in order to illuminate one another. There was no overkill-there was just enough to take in during a reasonably long visit. This was a show to put alongside the Chardin retrospective held at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1979 and the Watteau retrospective held at the National Gallery in Washington in 1984. Taken together, these shows form a triumvirate that presents French easel painting in all its unbeatable glory. In French painting, paint is emotion, the manipulation of materials is the expression of feelings. Sitting on the bench in the last gallery of the Courbet retrospective, surrounded by the tragic
