Around 1735, Mary Singleton and Richard Copley were married in Ireland; the young couple set off for America one year later. They settled in Boston, where Richard became the proprietor of a tobacco shop. Into this modest life a baby boy was born on July 3, 1738. The child was named John Singleton after his maternal grandfather. Before young John was 10 years old his father had died; in May of 1748 his mother married Peter Pelham, a widower with 5 children. Peter Pelham was an artist and schoolteacher; the joining of the Copley and Pelham households brought John Copley into direct contact with the tools and practice of making art. Sadly, Peter Pelham died in 1751, leaving John fatherless again, this time with an infant half brother. Although he was only 13, John was determined to supplement the family's income by making art. Using the tools his stepfather left behind, John Copley made his first prints and paintings in 1753. During this time John became friendly with John Smibert, another ©migr© who settled in Boston. Smibert was an accomplished portraitist, trained in Europe, and it was probably from him that John Copley learned that it was possible to make a living as an artist.

In an era when portraiture was the primary subject of colonial painters in America, Copley set an unprecedented standard for conveying both the physical and the psychological presence of his sitters. One of five portraits by Copley in the Museum's collection, the characterization of John Bours (1734-1815) is striking for its informality. A respected citizen of Newport, Rhode Island, and a devoted member of that town's Trinity Church, Bours is portrayed as a man of quiet intelligence in an introspective, pensive moment. This intimate likeness is rendered convincingly with a rich array of textures: the soft, brown velvet suit and crisp, white cuffs; the hard sheen of the mahogany chair; and the freely brushed landscape vista. Copley's artistic achievement is all the more extraordinary considering that the colonies offered no opportunities for formal training for native-born artists. Instead he had to glean what lessons he could from engravings of fashionable British portraits, through occasional correspondence with artists abroad, or from the canvases that he could see in America. Just over a decade after completing the portrait of Bours, Copley left behind lucrative patronage in Boston, Newport, and New York to pursue greater artistic ambitions as a history painter in Europe and England.

Copley was born on July 3, 1738, in Boston, and was trained by his stepfather, a mezzotint engraver. Copley's early work shows the influence of the Boston painter John Smibert and of English rococo portraitists ( see Rococo Style ). From the latter he learned the device of the portrait d'apparat, in which artifacts used by the subject are included in the portrait, as in Paul Revere (1768?, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), an intense likeness of the patriot-silversmith holding one of his silver teapots. By 1760 Copley's distinctive style had crystallized, characterized by meticulous technique, clear verisimilitude, and a vivid, balanced palette. His sitters included famous politicians (

John Singleton Copley American, 1738 - 1815 John Singleton Copley was born in Boston in 1738, and grew up there, training in the visual arts under his step-father Peter Pelham (c. 1697-1751), an English engraver who had immigrated in 1727 and married Copley's widowed mother in 1748. Copley's earliest paintings, from the mid-1750s, reveal the influence of English mezzotint portraits as well as the work of local and itinerant artists. He experimented with many media: oil on canvas, miniatures on copper or ivory, pastel, and printmaking. By the late 1750s he was established as a portrait painter.
Self Portrait Copley worked in Boston until 1774 with the exception of a six month painting trip to New York City in 1771. By the mid-1760s he wanted to compare his works with those by contemporaries in England, and in 1765 he sent a portrait of his half-brother Henry Pelham, Boy with a Squirrel , to the annual exhibition of the Society of Artists of Great Britain. Encouraged by Benjamin West and Joshua Reynolds, Copley left Boston for study in Europe. He left for London in 1774 and went almost immediately to Italy, where he spent more than a year, studying and painting. He returned to London in 1775, settling there with his wife and three of his children, who had come from Boston. 1776 marked the beginning of the second half of Copley's career. As his first work at the Royal Academy he exhibited

Copley in England - artist John Singleton Copley
Magazine Antiques Oct, 1995 by Emily Ballew Neff John Singleton Copley rarely missed an opportunity to bemoan the lack of cultural sophistication he perceived in colonial America. In 1767 he described the limited artistic environment of Boston to a friend: "You are sensible that fame cannot be durable where pictures are confined to sitting rooms, and regarded only for the resemblance they bear to their originals."(1) And to another he wrote, "the preservation of the likeness [is the] main part of the excellency of a portrait in the opinion of our New England Conoseurs."(2)
