Copley, John Singleton (b. July 3, 1738, Boston [Mass., U.S.]d. Sept. 9, 1815, London, Eng.) Generally considered the finest painter of colonial America, John Singleton Copley painted portraits and historical subjects. His Boston portraits show a thorough knowledge of his New England models, and his talent as a draftsman and colorist produced pictures of aristocratic elegance and grace (emigrated to London in 1775). Copley was born on July 3, 1738, in Boston, Mass., to immigrants recently arrived from Ireland. He began to paint in about 1753. His earliest works show the influence of his stepfather, an engraver, and the Boston artist John Smibert. In about 1755 Copley met the English artist Joseph Blackburn, whose use of rococo lightness and coloring he quickly adopted. He also made use of the rococo device called portrait d'apparatportraying the subject with objects associated with his daily lifethat gave his work a distinction not usually found in 18th-century American painting. Eager to expand his reputation beyond New England, Copley sent his

Collection: Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Accession number: 1979.7.31 M ARY T URNER S ARGENT Introduction This work was painted by John Singleton Copley, widely considered the greatest American portraitist of the eighteenth century. Copley was the first American artist to succeed in creating the illusion of a three-dimensional reality on canvas. This portrait depicts Mary Turner Sargent of Gloucester, Massachusetts shortly after her marriage to Daniel Sargent, a wealthy ship owner. Discussion Looking Closely There is no evidence of a colonial garden resembling the one in the walled patio where Mary Sargent stands. Like the portrait of Grizzell Apthorp, this setting was probably copied from a print so that the painting would resemble a portrait of an upper class English person. Copley often relied on English models for his compositions. Mary Sargent holds a scallop shell in a stream of water, symbolism also borrowed from an English print. The shell is an attribute of Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, while the water symbolizes life and purity. Style Even though Mary Sargent stands in a fictitious place, her size and the realistic way she is portrayed make it easy for us to accept her as"real." (Whereas in the portrait of Grizzell Apthorp, we may have a harder time perceiving her as real.) Mary Sargent's portrait may appear more real because of the painstaking way the artist painted all of the different textures and surfaces in the picture. A visitor to Copley's studio noted that he would mix paint on his palette for every individual tint and hold each color up to his model to confirm its accuracya very long process. Think of all the subtle gradations of color even within a small part of the face and imagine how much time this would take. Mary Sargent's son reported that his mother told him that she sat for this painting "fifteen or sixteen times! Six hours at a time!"

Along with his friend and some-time rival L Benjamin West, John Singleton Copley was the first native-born American painter to achieve fame at home and abroad. Born on Boston's Long Wharf, Copley was instructed in art by his stepfather Peter Pelham, a mezzotint engraver and portrait painter. Copley also learned from the paintings of Joseph Blackburn and Robert Feke, but he was, to an extraordinary degree, self-taught. Like West, Copley aspired from the start to be a history painter, but was forced to find his principal livelihood in portraits. Copley's likenesses perfected a style that gave special attention to technical dexterity in surfaces-the sparkling sheen of fabric and the detailed reflections of polished furniture, rendered with strong chiaroscuro-yet still probed the inner personalities of the prosperous sitters who commissioned them. Emboldened by the favorable reception in England of Boy with a Squirrel private collection) and by the encouraging words of West, Copley sailed on June 10, 1774

JOHN SINGLETON COPLEY'S PORTRAITS: A TECHNICAL STUDY OF THREE REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLES
J. William Shank
1 A BRIEF HISTORY OF COPLEY'S CAREER AND STYLISTIC DEVELOPMENT
THE STORY OF JOHN SINGLETON COPLEY is one of the earliest examples of The American Dream: a tale of rags-to-riches, achieved through one man's strong motivation, personal initiative, single-mindedness of purpose, and a spark of creative genius. The son of Irish working class immigrants in colonial Boston, Copley elevated himself, almost single-handedly, to a level of social prominence, first in a colonial town where artists were treated as merely useful craftsmen, and later in the sophisticated artistic circles of eighteenth-century London, during the formative years of the Royal Academy. With the early death of Peter Pelham in 1751, the thirteen-year-old Copley determined to add to the family income with his art. His earliest portraits show the strong influence of his predecessors in their flat shapes, shallow modelling, and sometimes pompous gestures. But almost from the start, his cool, metallic coloring was his own. Rapidly, in the 1750's, Copley moved past the limner artists of the generation before, to produce an illusion of reality in his portraits unprecedented on this side of the Atlantic. If his draftsmanship and his grasp of anatomy were somewhat lacking in his early works, his rendering of textures was unsurpassed; while still a teenager, John Singleton Copley was producing paintings better than any he had ever seen.

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center / DeWitt Wallace Gallery Colonial Williamsburg / Williamsburg, VA http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.org/ "Almost a Deception ..."John Singleton Copley and Company in Williamsburg B oston-born painter John Singleton Copley (1738-1815) is widely regarded as the finest painter in colonial America. His portraits, described by American painter Matthew Pratt as filled with "flesh and blood," reflect famed painter Benjamin West 's urgings that he manipulate light, shadow and color to make features "appear almost a deception." In the exhibition "'Almost a Deception ...'John Singleton Copley and Company in Williamsburg," Colonial Williamsburg's DeWitt Wallace Gallery presents a comparative showing of two of Copley's portraits and those of his American contemporaries Rufus Hathaway and Charles Willson Peale, and the English painter Francis Cotes. The exhibition, on view through December 2000, includes Copley's circa 1767 oil portrait of Josiah Quincy and one of his pastels, "Mrs. Gregory Townsend." It also includes a 1793 oil portrait of Ezra Weston, Jr. by Hathaway; Peale's circa 1772-1775 oil portrait of Warner (?) Lewis Jr. of Gloucester, Va., and Cotes' 1770 oil portrait of Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort. Regarding Copley's Quincy painting, Colonial Williamsburg's Vice President of Collections and Museums Ron Hurst, "This is the first time that Colonial Williamsburg has ever exhibited such a beautiful and important portrait by Copley. By setting it in the context of other colonial artists' works, and of English products of the same time, viewers will be able to get a better sense of the major qualities that make John Singleton Copley so revered and so highly esteemed today."
