Overview
John Singleton Copley, the foremost artist in colonial America, was virtually self-taught as a portraitist. By meticulously recording details, he created powerful characterizations of his Boston sitters. After he emigrated to London in 1774, Copley began to specialize in narrative scenes from history and joined the influential artistic institution, the Royal Academy of Art. Copley demonstrated a genius, in both his American and British periods, for rendering surface textures and capturing emotional immediacy.

John Singleton Copley
John Singleton Copley was a Boston-born American artist of the colonial period, famous for his portraits of important figures in colonial New England, particularly men and women of the middle class. His portraits were innovative in that they tended to portray their subjects with artifacts that were indicative of their lives.
He was born to Irish immigrant Richard Copley and his wife Mary Singleton Copley. Copleies owned and ran a tobacco shop in Boston. By 1748, Richard Copley had died 1748, Mary Copley married Peter Pelham, an engraver and teacher, and moved with her son to a quieter and more respectable part of Boston. John Singleton Copley was only about 13 years old in 1751 when his stepfather, Peter Pelham, died.
John Singleton Copley began painting portraits in his teens in his native Boston. Although self-taught, he was familiar with European art through the study of prints in the collection of his stepfather, the engraver Peter Pelham.
Copley was married to Susanna Farnham Clarke, whose father, Richard, was one of Boston’s richest merchants and local agent for the British East India Company. The couple had six children during their 45-year marriage. In 1774, Copley migrated to England with his family to continue painting there. He moved on to Paris, Genoa and Rome before returning to London nine months later.
In 1776 he visited Italy where he worked on devotional pictures. Later in the same year he settled in London with his family. In London he continued as a portrait painter, but his fine style lost its originality: he followed fashion rather then conviction. With demand for history subjects much greater in England than America, he pursued this genre seeking new modes of expression and using modern costume for historical characters.

Mrs. Thomas Gage
Oil on canvas, 50 x 40 in In 1771, Copley left his native Boston for a six-month stay in New York, where he accepted numerous portrait commissions. His first subject was Margaret Kemble Gage, the American-born wife of General Thomas Gage, commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America (who had sat for a portrait by the artist in 1768).
Mrs. Gage wears a turbanlike swath of drapery, a silk caftan over a lace-trimmed chemise, and an embroidered belt - a Turkish-style costume that enhances her languid pose. Such clothing was fashionable at British fancy dress balls, but since masquerade balls were not held at the time in New York, Mrs. Gage would have had no occasion to wear the costume outside the studio. Her faraway gaze suggests pensive thought and intellectuality, implying that she was not preoccupied with trivial matters. This is the first painting in which Copley depicted a woman in such exotic clothing or in such a state of melancholic reverie. Previous Next Return to American Collection

John Singleton Copley
COPLEY, John Singleton , painter, born in Boston, Massachusetts., 3 July, 1737; died in London, 9 September, 1815. I le is commonly called self-taught, but he probably received some instruction from his stepfather, Peter Pelham, who died in 1751. Boston was then a small provincial town where art was almost unknown and good instruction unattainable. Young Copley began at an early age to see visions of lovely forms and faces, which nature impelled him to reproduce with such materials as he could procure or make for himself. In the uncongenial atmosphere of colonial Boston such talent was phenomenal, and, as he was really successful in producing likenesses, he soon gained local celebrity by executing portraits of many members of the leading families, as is still attested by almost every notable collection in the city. In 1760 he sent to Benjamin West, in England, without name or address, a portrait, which at once gave him a place among artists of recognized merit. This painting is known as

About the Portrait John Singleton Copley, 18th-century Boston's preeminent portraitist, painted Mrs. John Gray most likely in 1763. His subject, Mary Otis Gray, was the daughter of James and Mary Allyne Otis of Barnstable, Massachusetts. Born in 1730, Mary had many siblings, among them James Otis, Jr., and Mercy Otis Warren, who both became active in the Revolutionary cause in America. In 1761, Mary wed John Gray, a Boston merchant, ropewalk owner, and collector of customs, and a Tory. She died on November 5 of the year that Copley painted this portrait. In 1923, a bequest of Pelham Winslow Warren gave the painting, along with mourning rings for Mrs. Gray and her infant son, John, to the Society. Mrs. John Gray is representative of John Singleton Copley's mature American style. Although his drawing remained a weak point-here evident in Mrs. Gray's awkward right arm and her hands-Copley employed a subtler use of shading and shadow than in his earlier portraits, as well as a sophisticated composition of vertical and diagonal elements.

Copley, John Singleton
Copley, John Singleton (b. July 3, 1738, Boston [Mass., U.S.]d. Sept. 9, 1815, London, Eng.) Generally considered the finest painter of colonial America, John Singleton Copley painted portraits and historical subjects. His Boston portraits show a thorough knowledge of his New England models, and his talent as a draftsman and colorist produced pictures of aristocratic elegance and grace (emigrated to London in 1775). Copley was born on July 3, 1738, in Boston, Mass., to immigrants recently arrived from Ireland. He began to paint in about 1753. His earliest works show the influence of his stepfather, an engraver, and the Boston artist John Smibert. In about 1755 Copley met the English artist Joseph Blackburn, whose use of rococo lightness and coloring he quickly adopted. He also made use of the rococo device called portrait d'apparatportraying the subject with objects associated with his daily lifethat gave his work a distinction not usually found in 18th-century American painting. Eager to expand his reputation beyond New England, Copley sent his

Curtains had been used in portraits since the Renaissance, both for decorative purposes and to suggest interior spaces adjoining the sitter's space, and English painters of the generation of Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) employed them regularly; but they became nearly ubiquitous in Copley's portraits during the 1760s, joining an array of other materials. He typically placed a curtain on one side of the background or the other in his pictures of both men and women and often included either a draped table or an upholstered chair - all in addition to the fabrics of the rich, complex costumes in which his sitters were dressed. Here as in other details Copley missed the mark in terms of contemporary British usage, for by the 1760s Reynolds, Gainsborough , Allan Ramsay, and the like had long since given up such extensive display of fabrics. Copley's reliance on fabrics was made possible by the settings he utilized, which most often represented either interiors or ambiguous porchlike areas, while the British painters by this time had moved their sitters largely to the out-of-doors.

John Singleton Copley unexpectedly illuminated America's colonial sky. The child of poor uncultured parents and only briefly the stepson of artist Peter Pelham, he became by 1760, as if by Providence, the colonies' supreme artist, a position he retained until his departure for London in 1774. His swift ascent and sustained eminence were the result of an innate ability to handle paint and produce images that eclipsed anything executed by his predecessors in America. Through his stepfather, Copley had access to a vast collection of prints after old masters and

Watson and the Shark By the mid-1700's the portrait was virtually the only art form available to the American painter. Portraiture was in great demand in the colonies and was sufficient to support a small number of artists. Foremost among these was John Singleton Copley. Born in Boston in 1738, Copley was influenced by the mezzotints of his stepfather, Peter Pelham, and the portraits of local portrait painter John Smibert. Copley painted both the young and the aged but emphasized setting to convey the desired mood. Ladies posed before fine furniture and textured draperies; men were surrounded by books and tools, hunting dogs and guns. His style was straightforward and realistic, creating portraits of great strength. Among his many 'subjects' were portraits of John Hancock, Samuel Adams, John Adams and countless lords and ladies of his era, both in America and in London. Eventually, Copley wearied of Boston where, he felt, painting was valued only as a useful craft. The public was "entirely destitute of all just ideas of the arts," so he left for London in 1774. After the painter's obligatory tour of Italy and then settling down in London, Copley turned to historical and religious paintings on a grand scale.
