edit Early life
Collins was born in Hampstead , London, the son of the well-known landscape and genre painter William Collins . His older brother was the novelist Wilkie Collins
edit Painting career
Collins met John Everett Millais and became influenced by the ideas of the Pre-Raphaelites, completing his painting Berengaria's Alarm in 1850. This depicted the wife of King Richard the Lionheart noticing her missing husband's girdle offered for sale by a peddlar. The flattened modelling, emphasis on pattern making, and imagery of embroidery were all characteristic features of Pre-Raphaelitism. Millais proposed that Collins should become a member of the Brotherhood, but Thomas Woolner and William Michael Rossetti objected, so he never became an official member. Collins fell in love with Maria Rossetti , but she rejected him. He became increasingly ascetic and introspective. These attitudes were expressed in Collins's best-known work

The remembrance of our meeting

among my pleasantest recollections and I most sincerely hope that neither you nor Mrs Fields will be able long to rest contented on the other side of the Atlantic. So I say au revoir rather than Good bye. always very sincerely yours Charles Allston Collins James Thomas Fields was the editor of Atlantic Monthly from 1861 to 1871. He was in Europe in 1869 - Dickens wrote inviting him on 9 April - and after touring round London with Dickens he arrived at Gad's Hill Place, as his guest on June 2. Fields and his wife stayed for a few days, taking trips into the countryside and enjoying a large dinner party with so many guests some had to be accommodated in the inn over the road. Fields returned to Gad's Hill in October "Once more we recall a morning at Gad's Hill, a soft white haze over everything, and the yellow sun burning through. The birds were singing, and beauty and calm pervaded the whole scene" (1). It is likely that this letter refers to that visit rather than the one in June. The piece referred to in the letter as 'On Accident' was in fact published in

WILKIE COLLINS'S FAMILY Front Page Wilkie Collins's Biography Wilkie Collins's Family Family Tree CHARLES ALLSTON COLLINS Charles Collins aged 5, painted in 1833 by Andrew Geddes Charles was Wilkie Collins's younger brother. He was born 25 January 1828 at Pond Street, Hampstead, and named after his father's American painter friend, Washington Allston. Tall and good-looking with red hair and blue eyes, Charles was unlike his brother in character as well as appearance, although they remained close throughout their lives. Charley, as he was known to family and friends, inherited his father's nervous temperament as well as his artistic ability, and suffered from a chronic lack of self-confidence, exacerbated by religious scruples. He never shared the youthful zest for life that was so marked a feature of his brother although as a boy he enjoyed skating and later became a good dancer. He also participated in Wilkie's amateur theatricals, playing the lead in A Court Duel In 1843 he became a student at the Royal Academy Schools, where he was a contemporary of Millais and Holman Hunt. He was associated with the foundation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood although to his great chagrin never admitted to full membership.

Collins, Charles Allston
(British, 1828-1873) Charles Allston Collins, son of the academician, William Collins (and brother of Wilkie Collins , the novelist) was a conventionally academic painter before his friendship with Millais in 1850 led him to change his style.
Convent Thoughts , his most famous work, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1851, where it shared in the general denunciation by the critics of all things Pre-Raphaelite. The Times wrote:
We cannot censure at present as amply or as strongly as we desire to do, that strange disorder of the mind or the eyes, which continues to rage with unabated absurdity among a class of juvenile artists who style themselves the PRB.
Collins' picture is typical of the early, gothic phase of the movement, and the religious piety of these works led many critics to accuse the painters of being Roman Catholic sympathizers. The mood of Convent Thoughts is certainly similar to Rossetti's early paintings, but the flowers and the garden reflect Millais' influence

Victorian Web Home Visual Arts Victorian Painters Charles Collins ... Paintings Convent Thoughts Charles Allston Collins Oil on canvas Arched top, 33 1/8 x 23 1/4 inches Ashmolean Museum, Oxford Compare Collin's study for the head According to Christopher Wood, "Collins's picture is typical of the early, gothic phase of the movement, and the religious piety of these works led many critics to accuse the painters of being Roman Catholic sympathizers. The mood of this picture is generally similar to Rossetti's early works , but the flowers and garden reflect Millais 's influence" (22). Peter Nahum explains that "Frances Farah Ludlow was the beautiful model for the nun who is so delicately portrayed in this drawing. The competition for stunning models was revealed by Millais in a letter to Mrs Combe Collins on 15th January, 1851: "I saw Carlo last night, who has been very lucky in persuading a very beautiful young lady to sit for the head of the nun. She was at his house when I called, and I also endeavored to obtain a seating, but was unfortunate as she leaves London next Saturday" (cited Faberman, p. 66). About the same time Collins wrote to Holman Hunt mentioning that he had been working on the nun's face from 'a friend of a friend' at her own house. Collins had borrowed the same nun's costume that Holman Hunt had used in Claudio and Isabella . Preparatory studies for Convent Thoughts are in the Ashmolean and the British Museum. A later version in pen and ink, dated 1853, is in Tate Britain."
