PERMANENT COLLECTION Home Section Menu The Voyage of Life: Childhood
by Thomas Cole Early in March of 1839, Thomas Cole was commissioned by the prominent New York banker and philanthropist Samuel Ward Sr., to paint an allegorical series of four paintings entitled "The Voyage of Life", the subject of which he had conceived in the fall of 1836.
Cole began work with great enthusiasm on the first of the series, named "Childhood" in September 1839, using as his guide a number of preliminary pencil drawings and oil sketches. Despite the unexpected death of his patron several months later, he continued working on this picture until early 1840 when it was in large measure complete.
Early in 1840, Cole began work on "Youth", the second picture. The third picture, "Manhood", was painted in the summer and fall of 1840, followed by "Old Age", the last picture of the series. The Voyage of Life: Youth
by Thomas Cole His great achievement in "The Voyage of Life" was his synthesis of three related ideas: life is a pilgrimage; a person's life can be divided into four distinct stages; and the course of a person's life can be metaphorically compared to a journey on a river that winds its way through a magical landscape. Cole invented a program that combined these three universal themes in simple pictorial terms. Despite the unexpected death of Ward several months after Cole began the series, he completed the four paintings in 1840. Difficulties with Ward's heirs prompted Cole to paint a second full-size set in Rome during the winter of 1841-1842. The second set of paintings are now at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C

The Hudson River School paintings can currently be seen at the National Academy of Design Museum in New York City. The Hudson River School painters focused not only on the Hudson Valley Region, but also on the Berkshires, the American West and numerous other landscapes across the country and abroad. They were known for highly Romantic painting styles, experimenting with light and shadow amidst grand landscapes, and aspiring to express an emotional state through their artwork. They viewed their pieces as more than simple paintings, but as studies of the sublime in nature. American portrait painters also developed a distinctly American style. Rather than creating idealistic images of their sitters, portrait painters captured honest and straightforward views of their subjects, depicting their unique personalities. Here is a sample of the exceptional pieces on view in this exhibition.

  • Digital TV: Get the Picture
January 8, 2007 In just a little over a year there will be a big change in the way television is broadcast. By February 17, 2009, every television set in America will need to be digital television (DTV) compatible to continue to receive local broadcast programming. On that day in February, all full-power television stations will stop broadcasting analog signals and continue their broadcasts in an exclusively digital format. While next February may seem a long time away, broadcasters are working to prepare the public ahead of time to help consumers get the education and equipment they need to successfully complete the DTV transition.

New York, MY, USA United States of America
The New-York Historical Society is pleased to announce that the exhibition The Course of Empire: Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School Landscape Tradition, featuring selections from the New-York Historical Society, will open at the New York State Museum on August 23, 2003. The exhibition showcases the depth and richness of the New-York Historical Society's collection of paintings and works on paper by renowned artists of the Hudson River School of landscape painting. Thomas Cole, long considered the founder of the Hudson River School and the father of 19th century American landscape as a whole, takes center stage in this exhibition with his seminal five-painting series, The Course of Empire. Commissioned by the pioneering American art collector, Luman Reed, the series was a culminating achievement in the artist's career, embodying ideas and approaches to landscape that profoundly influenced scores of other Hudson River School artists, many of whom are featured in the exhibition. The exhibition, sponsored by the New York State Museum Institute and HSBC, features 40 paintings and 11 other works on paper, including engravings and lithographs. Artists represented include several of Cole's devoted followers and friends, most notably Frederick Edwin Church, Asher Brown Durand, Jasper Francis Cropsey, John Frederick Kensett, and Martin Johnson Heade.
