Thomas Cole biography
A biography of a great American landscape painter of the nineteenth century, Thomas Cole, and a discussion of some major themes in his work
The nineteenth century saw the development of a type of painting which came to be called the “Hudson River School.” One of the founders and greatest painters in the Hudson River School was Thomas Cole. Thomas Cole was born in Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire, England in 1801. His family immigrated to America when he was 17. Cole probably learned the basics of oil painting from an itinerant portrait artist named John Stein, and in addition spent two years at the Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts. He first exhibited in New York, where painter Asher B. Durand and Colonel John Trumbull saw his work and found patrons for him. In the nineteenth century there were several ways artists sold their work. Some artists worked on commission, in which case a person, called a patron, would hire them to paint a certain scene or portrait. These patrons often provided money for artists to travel, particularly in Italy, Greece or France. European travel was considered essential to an artist’s development and training. In addition, artists could make work that was not specifically commissioned, and put that work in shows or galleries where people would see the work, and possibly purchase it. After purchasing several of Cole’s paintings from the gallery where he was exhibiting, George W. Bruen paid for Cole’s first trip up the Hudson River, the area he and other painters would return to so frequently in their work that they became known as the Hudson River School.

Biography:
Often considered the father of American landscape painting as well as the founder of the Hudson River School, Thomas Cole emigrated to America from Lancashire, England, when he was age eighteen. After spending a year in Philadelphia, Cole joined his family in the town of Steubenville, Ohio. While in England, Cole had been an apprentice to a designer of calico prints, and in Steubenville, he found work drawing patterns and possibly engraving woodblocks for his father's paper-hanging business. In Steubenville, Cole also began to explore landscape painting after gaining some rudimentary instruction in oil painting from a portrait painter named Stein. In 1823, Cole went with his family to Pittsburgh, where he again became an assistant in his father's business and made landscape sketches in his free time. Inspired by the landscapes of Thomas Doughty and Thomas Birch, which he saw at the Pennsylvania Academy during a stay in Philadelphia from 1823 to 1825, Cole became dedicated to a career as a landscape painter. In Philadelphia, he began to consider the distinctive characteristics of American scenery, but it was not until he moved to New York in 1825 that he turned his thoughts to his art.

Thomas Cole, "The Oxbow," 1836
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Cole relies heavily on European conventions of landscape painting to convey the visual representation of the struggle between wilderness and civilization. Cronon points out that the diagonal of the tree to the left that directs the view of the scene down the valley toward the farmland is a trademark of celebrated French landscapist Claude Lorrain. The dramatic storm clouds over the wilderness speak of the uncontrolled power of nature, but also of the sublimity of this power. Cole shows no remorse for the recession of the wilderness from the scene. The soft greens and yellows and the gentle rolling landscape of the farms suggest that the pastoral civilization that replaces the wilderness is as beautiful in its order as nature is in its sublimity. If you have questions or comments regarding the source material, please contact the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art directly through either this phone number or web address: Thomas Cole's " The Old Mill at Sunset" at Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art A decades-old quest by curators at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Mo., for a worthy work by "the father of American landscape painting" has ended with the purchase of Thomas Cole's The Old Mill at Sunset , which will be on view beginning March 4, 2005. The Museum bought the exceptional mid-19th-century landscape by Hudson River School painter Cole (1801-1848) from the Alexander Gallery, New York. Nelson-Atkins Director and CEO Marc Wilson finalized its purchase for an undisclosed sum drawn primarily from The Ever Glades Fund, established in 2002 by Sarah and Landon Rowland for the acquisition of American art. "Given the difficulty today of obtaining significant works by Cole," Wilson said, "this painting is particularly desirable because it is a quintessential summation of his landscape manner in rare, perfect condition." The addition of Cole's oil-on-canvas raises the quality of the Nelson-Atkins' collection of mid-19th-century landscape holdings tremendously, said Margaret Conrads, Samuel Sosland Curator, American Art. "This acquisition sets the stage for understanding all landscape painting in the American collection painted after 1844," Conrads said, referring to the canvas's date the year before the term "Manifest Destiny" was coined. "You could argue that every American landscape image painted during and after Cole's lifetime is informed by his work."

A striking example of Cole's romantic fantasies, this painting echoes the artist's other works of the period in its Italianate scenery and its attempt to illustrate themes dealing with the grandeur of antiquity, the passage of time, and the reassertion of nature. Rejected by Cole's patron, Luman Reed, and subsequently owned by the artist John M. Falconer, The Titan's Goblet Ulysses Deriding Polyphemus (National Gallery, London), to Italian architecture and geological formations, or to the golden goblet of the sun god Helios. The loftiness of the cup, rimmed with classical remnants, suggests the temporary gulf between the present, embodied in the surrounding landscape, from the classical culture that continues to nourish with its cascading waters.
