Thomas Cole
Thomas Cole is often called the "Father of the Hudson River School of Art." In 1826 he helped to found the National Academy of Design in New York City. In 1827 he made his first visit to the White Mountains. While best known for his allegorical paintings such as the Voyage of Life and the Course of Empire series, he did many White Mountain paintings including Flume in the White Mountains View of Mount Washington Mount Chocorua Notch in the White Mountains View Near Conway ; and Mount Washington from the Upper Saco Intervale Dubbed the Founder of the Hudson River School, Cole was apprenticed to a calico designer and wood engraver in England before he came to the United States with his family in 1818. He helped to found the N ational A cademy of D esign in 1826. The rest of his life he spent much of his time sketching from nature in the Catskills, White Mountains, Adirondacks, and the coast of Maine. In 1827, at the behest of Daniel Wadsworth, Cole visited the White Mountains for the first time. He vis i ted the New Hampshire mountains again a year later with fellow artist Henry Cheever Pratt, only eight years after the first footpath was opened to Mount Washington. He returned to New Hampshire for the last time in 1839.

    Cole, Thomas
Cole, Thomas, , American landscape painter, b. England. He arrived in the United States in 1818 and moved to Ohio, where he was impressed by the beauty of the countryside. In 1825 he went to New York, where his landscape paintings began to be appreciated. Largely self-taught, he depicted the scenery of the Hudson River valley and the Catskills, which he discovered on long walking trips, becoming a leader of the Hudson River school . In 1829 he went to Europe, where he spent some time sketching in England and Italy. In Paris he greatly admired the landscapes of Claude Lorrain. After he returned to New York, he was commissioned (1832) to paint his five famous allegorical scenes, farfetched and neoclassical in style, known as the

Thomas Cole has long been known as the founder of the Hudson River School. He has also come to be recognized as a romantic landscape painter of comparable importance to American culture as John Constable is to England's or Caspar David Friedrich to Germany's. Born in England in Cole emigrated with his parents to Pennsylvania in Already trained as an engraver, the aspiring painter set out to capture the still largely unexplored American wilderness. In a now familiar story, when Cole first exhibited his landscapes in New York City in they enthralled two of America's most prominent artists, John Trumbull and William Dunlap, both of whom immediately recognized the freshness and vitality of the young artist's vision.
From essentially topographical records of America's mountains, rivers, and forests, Cole moved quickly to incorporate incidents from James Fenimore Cooper's newly-published novels in his landscapes, thereby elevating those landscapes to the stature of history painting. Indeed, Cole seemed happiest when he could give full rein to his poetic imagination, as in such monumental series as The Course of Empire New-York Historical Society), initially conceived by the artist during his first trip to Europe, from

Research Interests
Our research interests are in the exploration and development of organometallic chemistry of the transmetallation of organic groups between metals and boron compounds. This research program is composed of two major projects: the migration of organic groups from organoboranes to metals, giving rise to new organometallic complexes based in part on groups formed using boranes and the transfer of organic groups from metals to boron, yielding new unavailable organoboranes. These projects show exceptional promise in advancing synthetic organic methodology combining the attributes of metals and organoboranes. This transmetallation reaction gives a new route to these primary alkyboranes with very high regioselectivity that would be difficult to prepare using previously established routes. This route has recently been used to prepare borolanes and explore their application to other boranes and synthesis. Research in progress has demonstrated another type of transmetallation, formation of Grignard reagents for organoboranes. We have found that primary alkyl groups migrate from organoboranes to the magnesium bromide cation in yields comparable to Grignard reagents prepared conventionally. This reaction allows one to potentially take advantage of the selectivity of hydroboration and organoborane reactions to form specific organic fragments. This approach is expected to form Grignard reagents that cannot be readily prepared using conventional methods.

Thomas Cole
Thomas Cole had already trained as a wood engraver in Liverpool when he and his family arrived in Philadelphia in 1819. After working in a variety of trades, Cole came to New York in the early 1820s and began to sell his landscape paintings to important patrons, including John Trumbull and William Cullen Bryant . His success was immediate, and as Asher B. Durand remembered, "His fame spread like wildfire." Cole's romantic images combined the sensibility of British romantic poets with the rough beauty of American scenery, to create a new form of painting that Americans claimed for their own. When Brady made this daguerreotype portrait in the late 1840s, Cole was one of the best-known artists in America. Mathew Brady Studio Daguerreotype, circa 1846
