West Rock, New Haven, Born to a prosperous and prominent Hartford, Connecticut, family, Frederic Church renounced a career in his family's textile business in 1844 when he apprenticed with landscape painter Thomas Cole. After Cole's 1849 death, Church inherited his teacher's mantle as one of the leaders of the Hudson River School. During the 1850s and 1860s he was one of the most famous and most richly compensated painters America had ever seen. His show-stopping masterpieces, such as Niagara (1857; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.) and The Heart of the Andes (1859; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) were seen by thousands of paying viewers in America and abroad and were acclaimed by critics as supreme achievements of landscape painting. If one were to pick a single picture from his early career that most clearly predicted this extraordinary success, it would be

The material was excerpted from "American Paradise: The World of the Hudson River School." As did so many contemporary landscape painters, Church settled into his own pattern of travel, hiking, and sketching from spring through autumn, followed by winter in New York painting, pursuing business affairs, and socializing. In April 1853, Church and his friend Cyrus Field set forth on an adventurous trip through Colombia (then called New Granada) and Ecuador. Church's first finished South American pictures, shown to great acclaim in 1855, transformed his career; for the next decade he devoted a great part of his attention to those subjects, producing a celebrated series that became the basis of his ensuing international fame. Nevertheless, his tastes and curiosity kept him ranging for other topics.

At the height of his career, the unveiling of one of Church's paintings would be reported in newspapers with the same excited interest as the opening of a new movie might be covered today. Discussion Rainy Season in the Tropics depicts two separate places. The Ecuadorian Andes fill most of the canvas; at right the tropical forest represents a scene based on a sketch Church made during a trip to Jamaica in 1865. There has been some debate about the inspiration for Rainy Season in the Tropics. Some scholars link this painting to the end of the Civil War; they believe that the rainbow connects the two landscapes, thereby symbolizing hope for the renewal and reunification of a divided America. Other scholars argue that the work is a response to the artist's sorrow at the death of two of his children in 1865. Both of these interpretations may be partly true, but we know from Church's sketches that he planned a large picture of a South American landscape with a double rainbow in 1863 a date well before he knew the outcome of the war or that his children would die. The meaning of

America has a problem with visionaries. In politics and religion, they announce a millennial future, while clinging to an imagined past that never existed. Sometimes at least, great artists do the same. When Romanticism crossed the Atlantic, did it burden American art with already faded traditions, or did it open access to the new world? Frederic Edwin Church makes the question inescapable. In the culminating decade of the Hudson River School, he built a castle high above the river, while creating canvases with a compositional breadth that anticipates late Modernism. He alters the scene before him, for a transcendental theater increasingly quaint even in its his time, while bringing the artist into the cast as creatively as an avant-garde painter some decades later. At the start of the century after Modernism, two exhibitions wrestled with Church's place between remote past and present. In 2006, " Treasures from Olana " makes it difficult to separate Church from his private fantasies. Just over five years before, a gallery made almost the same majestic error in reverse. " In Search of the Promised Land " assimilates a great American Romantic into modern art. But what a pleasure he becomes.

The Icebergs,
Oil on canvas
Anonymous gift, 1979.28 In the summer of 1859 Frederic Church embarked on a monthlong sketching trip aboard a chartered schooner exploring the waters off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Buffeted by high seas and afflicted with seasickness, Church sketched icebergs as they appeared on the horizon until the moment they threatened to capsize the small boats used to draw near them. These sketches inspired Church as he embarked on what was his largest canvas to date. Church’s interest in the Arctic stemmed from the disappearance of the Franklin Expedition, lost while searching for the Northwest Passage in 1847. The ensuing search for Franklin caught the American imagination and stimulated interest in the frozen North as an irresistibly beautiful yet deadly frontier. Church completed this painting during the first months of the Civil War. A Union supporter, he exhibited it in April 1861 to benefit the Union’s Patriotic Fund with the title
