He was a central figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painters. While committed to the natural sciences, he was "always concerned with including a spiritual dimension in his works". The wealth of Church's father allowed him to pursue his interest in art from a very early age. At eighteen years of age, Church became the pupil of Thomas Cole in Palenville, New York . He was elected as a member of the National Academy of Design five years later, in 1849. Soon after, he sold his first major work to Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum Church settled in New York where he taught his first pupil, William James Stillman . From the spring to autumn each year Church would travel, often by foot, sketching . He returned each winter to paint and to sell his work. Between 1853 and 1857, Church traveled in South America , financed by businessman Cyrus West Field , who wished to use Church's paintings to lure investors to his South American ventures. HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL Morning, Looking East Over the Hudson Valley from the Catskill Mountains Frederic Edwin Church
Oil on canvas, 1848
AIHA Collection: Gift of Catherine Gansevoort Lansing This painting shows a view from an elevated rocky spot somewhere in the Catskills, probably near the Catskill Mountain House, where Church had sketched with his teacher Thomas Cole as early as 1844. Confidently painted, with carefully described details of rocks and vegetation and freely handled clouds, Morning was a remarkable achievement for so young a painter.
In 1844, Church was the first formal pupil accepted by Thomas Cole, America's leading landscape painter. From Cole, Church learned both a reverence for nature as a subject and a commitment to making his art express noble and lofty ideas. Church made his professional debut at the National Academy of Design in 1845. By 1848, when Morning and three other of his works were exhibited at the American Art-Union, he had already gained a significant reputation. site designed and hosted by knick.net

Landscapes by Frederic Edwin Church F rederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) was one of the most prominent American landscape painters of the 19th century. A prolific and successful artist, Church produced epic scenes that captivated audiences and received great critical acclaim. He also made a large number of preparatory drawings and oil sketches - smaller works of art that reveal the artist's fluency in recording the natural world and serve as a testament to his scientific interests in geology and atmospheric effects. While Church sold most of his finished paintings, he retained representative examples of his work to adorn his home, Olana, an elaborate Persian-influenced castle perched on a hilltop overlooking the Hudson River in New York.

Organized by Kevin J. Avery, Associate Curator of American Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Treasures from Olana features 18 paintings by Church that the artist kept or reacquired for his own home and personal collection. Mostly intimate landscape studies and oil sketches, the paintings trace the arc of Church's career - from an early scene of the Catskill Mountains and studies of the dramatic New England sky, to vignettes from his travels abroad and later views of the landscape around his beloved home. These canvases tell the story of the artist through his own work and form the basis of this exhibition, which marks the first time that these paintings have traveled as a group.

American artists of the mid-nineteenth century usually went to Europe or the western frontier in order to expand their repertoire. Frederic Church went first to the tropics and volcanoes of South America. His reasons make a fascinating chapter in the history of American art and thought.
Church was the best known pupil of Thomas Cole, who recognized the singularity of American wilderness landscape and was the first to invest it with heroic grandeur. Church, like other painters of his generation, John Kensett, Sanford R. Gifford, and Jasper Cropsey, sketched and painted the Catskills and mountains of New England. In his early pictures he gave to water a reflective, burnished surface, to sunset clouds dramatic color and substance, and painted distant detail so clearly that his picture space seems filled with transparent radiance. By the early Church was not only painting views of specific American places with topographical exactitude, he was also combining separate elements of meticulously detailed scenery into landscapes of heroic breadth and depth.

CHURCH, Frederic Edwin , painter, born in Hartford, Connecticut, 4 May, 1826. When quite young he became a pupil of Thomas Cole at Catskill, New York, where his first pictures were painted, he early established himself in New York, and in 1849 was elected a member of the National academy. In 1853 and 1857 he visited South America, and made many sketches of tropical and Andean scenery, which he afterward developed into large pictures. Several years later an expedition to the coast of Labrador gave him material for his great picture entitled "Icebergs," which attracted much attention on its exhibition in London in 1863. In 1866 he visited the West Indies, and two years later Europe and the Holy Land, which resulted in important works. His best-known work is the

Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900)
In 1844, at the age of 18, Church became Thomas Cole's only pupil. He was soon proficient enough to begin exhibiting. He became an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1849 and a full member the following year. In 1850, Church was also elected a member of the Century Association. Church traveled from the arctic to the tropics making copious sketches in search of material for his elegant paintings. His paintings were often extremely large, and they enthralled crowds with their realistic, technical virtuosity. Church's studio was in the 10th Street Studio Building in New York City from 1858 to 1887. He was a founding trustee of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City and served with the institution from 1870 to 1887. In 1876 he suffered from his first attack of "inflammatory rheumatism," which led him to paint with his left hand. By 1880 Church's painting activity declined markedly. He turned his interest to the embellishment of his home, Olana, in Hudson, NY, now a museum in his memory.
