Marc Chagall
Marc Chagall, who died in 1985 at the age of 97, is without doubt one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. In his paintings he created a unique world full of pathos, poetry, humor and enchantment, drawing on vivid memories of his childhood in what is today Belorus.
Clearly influenced by Byzantine and Russian icon painting and folk art, he wished his own mythological floating figures and symbolism to be interpreted freely, if at all. Chagall loved life.

Chagall, Marc [Shagal, Mark (Zakharovich); Shagal, Moses]
(b Vitebsk [now Viciebsk], Belarus’, 7 July 1887; d Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Alpes-Maritimes, 28 March 1985). French painter, draughtsman, printmaker, designer, sculptor, ceramicist and writer of Belarussian birth. A prolific artist, Chagall excelled in the European tradition of subject painting and distinguished himself as an expressive colourist. His work is noted for its consistent use of folkloric imagery and its sweetness of colour, and it is characterized by a style that, although developed in the years before World War I, underwent little progression throughout his long career. Though he preferred to be known as a Belarussian artist, following his exile from the Soviet Union in 1923 he was recognized as a major figure of the Ecole de Paris, especially in the later 1920s and the 1930s. In his last years he was regarded as a leading artist in stained glass.

This is my gift to that people which lived here thousands of years ago among the other Semitic people.” Marc Chagall February 6, 1962 The Chagall Windows The light that emanates from the twelve stained glass windows bathes the Abbell Synagogue at the Hadassah University Medical Center in a special glow. The sun filters through the brilliant colors of the stained glass capturing their radiance. Even in the misty haze of a cloudy day, Chagall’s genius transforms time and space. The synagogue’s Jerusalem stone floor and walls absorb this beauty and reflect it. Standing within the simple square that forms the pedestal for the windows, gazing up at the vivid imagery, the Jewish symbols, the

He has drawn dozens of illustrations for the holy book During the 1960s, when he was a resident of Vence, a hill village above the French Riviera, he painted a series of radiantly colored oils depicting scenes from the Old Testament, intended to hang in several local chapels.

"I don't want to sell these paintings. I'm going to give them to you," Chagall told Andre Malraux, France's Minister of Culture, whose fondness for Chagall's work resulted in major commissions for the painter in past years, notably the decorations for the ceiling of the Paris Opera. Replied Malraux: "All right, Chagall. Then we'll construct a building for them." Clad in a paint-spattered sports coat ("I'm painting myself these days"), Chagall energetically, and critically, supervised the hanging of his works. Dismissing an awed admirer's allusion as "Chagall's Sistine Chapel" with a twinkling "Let's not exaggerate," the snowy-haired octogenarian defined his Biblical Message: "I want this place to be neither a museum nor a chapel but a place where everyone can come to pray or dream in his own way."

, Bakersfield) Like his contemporaries, Picasso, Braque, Miro, and Klee, Marc Chagall's contributions to the history of art in this century are unquestioned. And yet, this assent in and of itself poses a problem in that our perception of what Chagall accomplished and how he did it, becomes blurred. Examination is no longer necessary.
For that reason, this thoughtful and meticulous exhibition, organized by guest curator Charlotte Sherman, the Associate Director of the Heritage Gallery, offers an opportunity to revisit Chagall's unique and profound visual language. And by focusing the exhibition exclusively on works on paper, we again become aware of another shared aspect with Picasso, for like him, Chagall had a lifelong romance with paper, most particularly with the technical demands of etchings and lithography.
Beyond that the proof of the artist's hand is best exposed in the line on paper. By organizing this exhibition chronologically Sherman allows the viewer to absorb the development of the mastery of line so synonymous with Chagall beginning with the suite Mein Leben (My Life) [1922], which Chagall executed in Berlin for the publisher, Paul Cassirir. In it, Chagall recalls images drawn from his birthplace, Vitebsk (today, Belarus), Russia, where he was born in 1887 and where he married his wife, Bella in 1914.

The art of Marc Chagall at All Saints, Tudeley
All Saints, Tudeley is unique in having all twelve of its windows filled with colourful stained glass by the celebrated Russian emigré artist Marc Chagall. The windows at Tudeley are a memorial tribute to Sarah d'Avigdor-Goldsmid, the daughter of Sir Henry and Lady d'Avigdor-Goldsmid, who died in 1963 at the tragically early age of 21, in a sailing accident off Rye. The family then lived at the fine Jacobean house Somerhill which is situated nearby.
Why Chagall? Chagall came to stained glass work relatively late in his long career. Some of his finest work in the medium is at the synagogue of the Hadassah Medical Centre in Jerusalem, depicting the Twelve Tribes of Israel. (Images are available online here
The only other Chagall glass in Britain is a window at Chichester Cathedral, which is based on the theme of Psalm 150: 'Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord'. An attractively illustrated monograph entitled "Chagall Glass at Chichester and Tudeley", edited by Prof Paul Foster, is available from All Saints Church (or from Chichester Cathedral bookshop). To quote from the preface by Dr Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi, " The concept that Art can add spirituality is something that goes to the core of all religions ... [Marc Chagall's stained glass] can but serve to enhance the spirituality of the beautiful surroundings in which they are placed, advance the fervour with which the Almighty is worshipped, and increase the devotion of those coming under the inspiration of Chagall's divinely-inspired talent.

Comprised of celebrated musicians and music historians, Le Bon Vent sets forth on a musical odyssey from the stately courts of France across the Atlantic to the new worlds of Quebec, New England, and Louisiana. The band traces the evolution of a music that has been influenced by everyone from 17th century courtiers to Acadian and New England settlers, yet amazingly remains uniquely French after nearly four centuries of change. The Bon Vent repertoire includes songs from the Limousin and Auvergne regions sung in medieval French dialects, dance tunes such as the bourree, gavotte and mazurka, and Parisien Valse Musette, as well as music drawn from New England's own Franco-American heritage, blending folk, medieval, jazz, and classical music into a rich and critically acclaimed 21st century m©lange.
