Chagall Stained Glass
In the Eastern side of the Public Lobby visitors can see a stained-glass window designed by the French artist Marc Chagall. It was a gift from United Nations staff members as well as Marc Chagall himself, presented in 1964 as a memorial to Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary-General of the UN, and fifteen other people who died with him in a plane crash in 1961. The memorial, which is about 15 feet wide and 12 feet high, contains several symbols of peace and love, such as the young child in the center being kissed by an angelic face which emerges from a mass of flowers. On the left, below and above motherhood and the people who are struggling for peace are depicted. Musical symbols in the panel evoke thoughts of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which was a favourite of Mr. Hammarskjold's.

From his youth in pre-revolutionary Russia to his death at age 97, his artistic output was unceasing. He developed a very personal imagery of flying lovers, rabbis, curious hybrid animals, and scenes of Paris in his paintings and windows. Today, continuing interest in his work attests to his place of prominence among the most sought after contemporary artists. Chagall was born to a poor Jewish family. The imagery of the Old Testament and the symbolism of Jewish worship recur frequently in his art. This aspect of his work brought him many ecclesiastical commissions, both Jewish and Christian.

From his entry in the Historical Dictionary of Belarus (Zaprudnik, 1998; p. 73)
"World-famous painter born in the town of Liozna near Viciebsk [today's Belarus; then part of imperial Russia]. He studied in St. Petersburg, Russia, and after 1922 lived most of his life in France. His paintings were largely inspired by Jewish life and landscapes of the city of Viciebsk, where he spent his childhood and early adulthood. During the Soviet period, his art was banned and his name never mentioned. The house Chagall was born in was restored in the 1990s and transformed into a museum in 1997."
News Article: Marc Chagall Days Kick Off in Viciebsk
"The traditional annual Marc Chagall Days began in Vitsyebsk on July 7 [2007]. The Days, held for the 17th time, mark the 120th birthday of the renowned Viciebsk-born artist. An open door day was held at the Marc Chagall museum in Viciebsk on Saturday. Visitors were told how the museum's collection was gathered and how a museum was established in the artist's native house on Pakrowskaya Street, where a traditional festival will take place, Lyudmila Khmyanitskaya, director of the museum, told BelaPAN. According to her, the festival will feature performances by a Moscow percussion band called Theater of Sounds and a Russian circus group. //BelaPAN "

In addition to Old Testament themes, Russian village life was a common favorite subject. His dreamy, vividly-colored, often playful pieces caused him to be associated with the Surrealists (a charge he vigorously denied). Besides painting, Chagall's huge output included book illustration, set and costume design, murals, lithography and a number of truly amazing stained glass windows. Important Works:

      Biography:
    • June 2007 - Please visit our new Chagall Store with more Chagall Chagall pages The magic of Marc Chagall is in the images of childhood memories that float through many of his works. Untainted by acquaintance with modern experiments, Chagall's work is honest and direct in its revelation of the artist's character. We know him to have been a gentle, caring and passionate lover - the timeless image of himself and his beloved Bella in The Birthday (1915) sends our heart soaring to float with him on a cloud of ecstasy. We are sure of his devout relationship with his Jewish faith - numerous Chagall works draw on Jewish symbolism and reference Judaism including stained-glass masterpieces like The Twelve Tribes of Israel (1960-62 ); and we know that his heart was eternally connected to his childhood home of Vitebsk - nostalgic images of this small provincial ghetto in Russia are the backdrop to many of Chagall's best known works such as I and the Village (1911) a painting in which clear Cubist influences fracture the picture plane like a stained-glass window, and an atmosphere of fantasy envelops us as dreamlike images seem to float above the ground, dispensing with the conventions of space and perspective.

    News Glossary Biographies ...
    Marc Chagall Biography
In 1914, before the outbreak of World War I, Marc Chagall held a one-man show in Berlin, exhibiting work dominated by Jewish images and personages. During the war, he resided in Russia, and in 1917, endorsing the revolution, he was appointed Commissar for Fine Arts in Vitebsk and then director of the newly established Free Academy of Art. The Bolshevik authorities, however, frowned upon Chagall's style of art as too modern, and in 1922, Marc Chagall left Russia, settling in France one year later. He lived there permanently except for the years 1941 - 1948 when, fleeing France during World War II, he resided in the United States. Chagall's horror over the Nazi rise to power is expressed in works depicting Jewish martyrs and Jewish refugees. In addition to images of the Hassidic world, Chagall's paintings are inspired by themes from the Bible. His fascination with the Bible culminated in a series of over 100 etchings illustrating the Bible, many of which incorporate elements from Jewish folklore and from religious life in Vitebsk. Chagall's other illustrations include works by Gogol, La Fontaine, Y. L. Peretz, and his autobiographical Ma Vie (1931; My Life 1960) and Chagall by Chagall (1979).

    San Francisco, CA, USA
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) will be the sole venue outside Paris for a major retrospective of the work of painter Marc Chagall. Marc Chagall will include approximately 65 paintings and 88 works on paper including many never before seen in the United States from all periods of the artist’s seven-decade career.Organized jointly by the Reunion des Musees Nationaux, Paris, in conjunction with the Musee National Message Biblique Marc Chagall, Nice, and SFMOMA, the exhibition is the first comprehensive look at this artist since 1985 and offers a unique opportunity to reevaluate a body of work that is universally renowned but often underestimated. Jean-Michel Foray, director of the Chagall Museum in Nice and the Fernand Leger Museum in Biot, France, has organized the retrospective; overseeing the San Francisco presentation is Janet Bishop, SFMOMA curator of painting and sculpture. The exhibition is sponsored by Bank of America and Visa USA. A fully illustrated catalogue will be produced in conjunction with the exhibition; the hardcover edition is published by SFMOMA in collaboration with Harry N. Abrams, Inc. Chagall’s work is distinguished by surrealistic inventiveness, as well as by a use of humor and fantasy that draws deeply on the resources of the unconscious. Strong and often brilliant colors infuse his canvases with a dreamlike, nonrealistic simplicity, while the combination of imagination, religion and nostalgia conveys a joyous quality. One of the key themes addressed in the exhibition will be how Chagall’s conception of the artist as a messenger from a better and more spiritual world drew him away from the modernist movements of his time.
