Mark Zakharovich Shagal (1887-1985) Mark Zakharovich Shagal, known today all over the world as Marc Chagall, was born on July 7, 1887, in Vitebsk, Belorussia. He was the oldest of nine brothers. His father worked in a salt herring factory, his mother took care of the household, and the grandfather taught the boy, instilling in him love for religion and the knowledge of the Torah. In 1906, Chagall left the Jewish elementary school he attended and began studying at Yehuda Pen's school of painting in Vitebsk. In the winter of the same year, Chagall decided to move to St Petersburg, hoping that his art would find approval there. However, he failed his first art examination. Putting his pride aside, in 1907 Chagall applied to and was accepted to the school of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in St. Petersburg, directed by Nikolai Roerich. Dissatisfied with the school, he transferred to Zeidenberg's private art school and later to Zvantseva's School, where he studied with Mstislav Dobuzhinskii and Lev Bakst . In 1910 he moved to Paris and found a place in the famous "La Ruche" (Beehive) in the Vaugirard district, where he met the poets Blaise Cendrars and Guillame Appolinaire, and the painters Chaim Soutine, Fernand Leger, and Robert Delaunay. Chagall always stressed the importance of Paris for his development: "In Paris, it seems to me, I have found everything, but above all, the art of craftsmanship. I owe all that I have achieved to Paris, to France, whose nature, men, the very air, were the true school of my life and art." Chagall's exposure to

Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985) Russian-born French painter and designer, distinguished for his surrealistic inventiveness. He is recognized as one of the most significant painters and graphic artists of the 20th century. His work treats subjects in a vein of humor and fantasy that draws deeply on the resources of the unconscious. Chagall's personal and unique imagery is often suffused with exquisite poetic inspiration.
Chagall was born July 7, 1887, in Vitsyebsk, Russia (now in Belarus), and was educated in art in Saint Petersburg and, from 1910, in Paris, where he remained until 1914. Between 1915 and 1917 he lived in Saint Petersburg; after the Russian Revolution he was director of the Art Academy in Vitsyebsk from 1918 to 1919 and was art director of the Moscow Jewish State Theater from 1919 to 1922. Chagall painted several murals in the theater lobby and executed the settings for numerous productions. In 1923, he moved to France, where he spent the rest of his life, except for a period of residence in the United States from 1941 to 1948. He died in St. Paul de Vence, France, on March 28, 1985.

Forum Articles Modern Art Marc Chagall Biography - 1887-1985
Marc Chagall was born as one of eight children of a Russian-Jewish family in Vitebsk/Belarus. His given name was not Marc, but Moses. In Paris - at that time the Mecca of art - Chagall experienced Fauvism and Cubism. Soon he developed his very own poetic style. Besides his paintings and glass-windows for Roman-Catholic cathedrals and Jewish synagogues, he created a rich plethora of prints. As color was of such great essence for his work, lithography became the artist's favorite technique.
Early Lithographs 1922-1923
Chagall was already 35 years old when he started with printmaking techniques. At that time he lived in Berlin/Germany with his wife Bella and his daughter Ida. He created woodcuts, etchings and a total of 24 lithographs. These early prints were drawn by the artist on paper and transformed into lithographs by a professional printer. At that time, Chagall - as so many famous artists - did not yet have the necessary knowledge and skill to master the technical printing process himself.

The Synagogue of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center was dedicated on February 6th, 1962, as part of Hadassah's Golden Anniversary celebration. The floors and interior walls are made of Jerusalem Stone, and the Synagogue is illuminated by a hanging lantern and by sunlight which streams through the magnificent Chagall Windows. Marc Chagall, who was present at the dedication, spoke of the joy he felt in bringing "my modest gift to the Jewish people, who have always dreamt of biblical love, of friendship and peace among all people; to that people who lived here, thousands of years ago, among other Semitic people. My hope is that I hereby extend my hand to seekers of culture, to poets and to artists among the neighboring people." The creation of the Windows was a labor of love to Chagall and his assistant, Charles Marq, both of whom worked on the project for two years. Marq developed a special process of veneering pigment on glass which allowed Chagall to use as many as three colors on a single uninterrupted pane, rather than being confined to the traditional technique of separating each color pane by lean strips. To ensure that each window receives the proper light, Marq came to Jerusalem and made tests on the spot where each of the windows was to be placed.

http://www.col-ed.org/cur/misc/misc27.txt
TITLE: Marc Chagall AUTHOR: Mary Ann Williamson, Barratt, UT GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: 2, art OVERVIEW: This is an art lesson that provides practice for thinking skills. PURPOSE: To introduce students to the artist Marc Chagall and identify his work. OBJECTIVES: 1. Students will be able to identify the paintings of Marc Chagall when presented with ten prints, three of which Chagall painted. 2. The students will be able to list four of five characteristics of Marc Chagall's work. 3. Students will paint a Chagall-like picture. RESOURCES/MATERIALS: art prints (I and the Village, Feathers in Bloom, Rain, Circus Rider), paper, tempera, crayons, watercolors ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: 1. Write the name Marc Chagall on the board and tell about his life. 2. Discuss the prints by Chagall emphasizing the following characteristics. a. arbitrary color b. unusual size relationships c. bright pure color d. dream like e. scenes that were memories of his Russian homeland 3. Brainstorm with class; What would be interesting to you to paint with arbitrary color? What would you paint of unusual size? 4. Using the painting, "I and the Village", discuss how he used size to make things more important. 5. Have the students make a painting as inspired by Marc Chagall and paint their village or town using the characteristics of Chagall's paintings. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: Students can also write a composition or story to go with their work. Size relationships and perspective can be studied. Helpful hints: Overhead concentration - Run a concentration board on a transparency. Run off a paper with skill to be practiced. This is especially effective for matching answers like words and definitions or math problems and answers. Cut up the paper and place it upside down in the numbered squares on the overhead. Turn the papers over to match. Can be used with entire class or teams. Group response - Place three fingers directly under the chin. Hold up 1,2, or 3 for response to teacher questions. The rest of the class cannot see how many the student holds up but the teacher can quickly group check an entire class. Different way to pair students. Have them line up according to birth date - bend the line and pair with student across from you. Brainstorming - Use Scategories Dice - roll and use the letter that comes up to brainstorm categories (all mammals that begin with b) good for parts of speech, etc. Teaching students to write dialogue - Pass out a picture with more than one person in it and write dialogue to go with it. Use a yellow highlighter pen to go over dialogue in an actual text. Mercer Meyer picture books are good to have students write dialogue to go with one or two pages.

"Ever since my earliest youth, I have been fascinated by the Bible. I have always believed...that it is the greatest source of poetry of all time...I have sought its reflection in life and art. The Bible is like an echo of nature, and this is the secret I have endeavoured to transmit." Marc Chagall. Marc Chagall, the eldest of nine children was born in the Russian city of Vitebsk. He was trained in St. Petersburg from 1906 to 1909, where he also worked as a sign-writer, then in 1910 he moved to Paris. It was there that he met such members of the avant-garde as Apollinaire, Delaunay, Léger, Modigliani and Soutine, and his work began to show Cubist influences. Chagall had his first one-man show in Berlin in 1914 but upon visiting Russia was forced to stay due to the outbreak of war. His marriage resulted in a series of exuberant paintings of lovers, such as 'Birthday’ (1915-23). Following the Russian Revolution Chagall was appointed Fine Arts Commissar for Vitebsk and founded an art academy. After suffering difficulties with two of his fellow teachers, Lissitsky and Malevich, he resigned, moved to Moscow in 1920 and designed for the newly founded Jewish Chamber Theatre. In 1923 he returned to Paris on the invitation of Ambroise Vollard who commissioned Chagall to produce the illustrations 'Dead Souls'. Over the next few years Vollard was to remain Chagall's main benefactor.
