Look first at this drawing of Ginger Jar and Fruit on a Table (c.1890, 24x36cm). The sturdily constructed pencil sketch is filled in only here and there with color.
In the drawings where he uses lines boldly, such as Large Pine, Study (1895, 28x44cm), line stands out as the structure underneath the brushstrokes with a wonderfully robust clarity. The monumental strength of the tree is conveyed by a rugged weight and fragmentation of line throughout the form, and in the blunt broken branches on the right contrasted with the long graceful limbs on the left. Softening this vigorous effect are the deliciously textured brushstrokes that render the pine needles cloaking the tree, and the large areas of bare beige paper.

Was artist Paul Cezanne an alcoholic?
    Cezanne did not abuse alcohol
Cezanne was taken seriously by many sharp observers during his most productive years. If there had been any sort of alcohol abuse by him, it would most surely have been noticed. Not one of the many writers and artists who wrote about him mention anything about alcohol abuse. There is nothing in their writing to suggest any sort of 'cover-up' of alcohol consumption or abuse by him. At the most, there is ocassional mention of wine at dinner; but that is all.

Cézanne, Paul
(b. Jan. 19, 1839, Aix-en-Provence, Fr.d. Oct. 22, 1906, Aix-en-Provence)
French painter, one of the greatest of the Postimpressionists, whose works and ideas were influential in the aesthetic development of many 20th-century artists and art movements, especially Cubism . Cézanne's art, misunderstood and discredited by the public during most of his life, grew out of Impressionism and eventually challenged all the conventional values of painting in the 19th century through its insistence on personal expression and on the integrity of the painting itself. He has been called the father of modern painting. Encyclopaedia Britannica Photographs by Mark Harden © 19 Sep 2002, Nicolas Pioch Top Up Info

"May I repeat what I told you here: treat nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere, the cone, everything brought into proper perspective so that each side of an object or a plane is directed towards a central point. Lines parallel to the horizon give breadth... lines perpendicular to this horizon give depth. But nature for us men is more depth than surface, whence the need to introduce into our light vibrations, represented by the reds and yellows, a sufficient amount of blueness to give the feel of air."

See also: Impressionism VIEW IMAGE LIST Delacroix , he retains from Rubens and the Italians a concept of the grand - not in the size of the canvas but in the weight and complexity of variation. His grandeur is without rhetoric and convention, and inheres in the dramatic power of large contrasts and in the frankness of his means. His detached contemplation of his subjects arises from a passionate aspiring nature that seeks to master its own impulses through an objective attitude to things. The mountain peak is a natural choice for him, as is the abandoned quarry , the solitary house or tree , and the diversity of humble, impersonal objects on the table Gauguin and Van Gogh Impressionist friends. This is evident from the range of themes alone; but it is clear in the painterly qualities as well. He draws or colors; he composes or follows his immediate sensation of nature; he paints with a virile brush solidly, or in the most delicate sparse watercolor, and is equally sure in both. He possessed a firm faith in spontaneous sensibility, in the resources of the sincere self. He can be passionate and cool, grave and light; he is always honest. early phase ; perhaps we may recognize it too even in the detached aspect of the world that he finally shapes into a serenely ordered whole. I do not doubt that the personal content of this classic art will in time become as. evident as the aesthetic result."

Paul Cezanne Between Aix and Paris, in search of the absolute... The early years Paul Cezanne was born in Aix on 19 January 1839. His father, a future banker, rana hat shop where trade was flourishing. With his sister Marie, born in 1841, he frequented the primary school on the rue des Epinaux. At the age of 10 he was enrolled at the Saint Joseph boarding school. Three years later, in 1852, the young scholar followed the classes of the Bourbon college (the present Mignet college) as a day student. There he met Emile Zola and Baptistin Baille. During the holidays, these inseparable friends roamed the Aixois countryside. All three read poetry voraciously and experienced the intense sensations of being at one with nature. From 1863 to 1880, his canvases were systematically refused by the jury of the Salon. He soon gave up submitting his works to the opinion of official "masters" of art.

really cold days, Cezanne stayed in the middle of these familiar objects which became the models of his still life paintings : some pottery, bottles , vases, paper flowers or fabrics, fruits, mainly apples , as well as a some skulls and the little plaster cupid

A (French, 1839-1906) His early works were often pictures of violent and melodramatic subjects made with thick, dark paint . Exposed to the work of the Impressionists , his palette lightened, but he reacted to the lack of structure in the Impressionists' paintings by developing a way of using color to render his images as compositions of planes , or, as he described it in a letter to Emile Bernard in 1904, in a kind of empirical geometry of " cylinders spheres , and cones ." Because his efforts established the foundation of the modernist trend toward abstraction , Cézanne is widely known as the "Father of Modern Art."
