Mary Cassatt (1884-1926)
Mary Cassatt is one of America's most famous women artists. Against her father's wishes, Cassatt moved to Paris, France to paint, study and exhibit with other Impressionists. She is most famous for her paintings of women doing everyday activities such as bathing a child, writing letters or drinking tea. In this painting, The Bath, Cassatt shows a mother bathing her child. Like fellow artists, Edgar Degas and Berthe Morisot , Cassatt liked to surprise us with an unexpected viewpoint. In this painting, you can imagine you are standing looking down at the mother and child.

Counterproofs by Mary Cassatt at Adelson Galleries; plus Balthus in a midtown window by Maureen Mullarkey It was Degas who first suggested Baby Charles Looking Over His Mother's Shoulder Portrait of a Young Woman in Green samisen Ambiance at Adelson, occupying a duplex in The Mark Hotel, is ideally suited to collectors of antique The most tantalizing exhibition Two paintings are new to me. One is a portrait of a woman in blue, possibly from the 1930s. The other is an arresting, hieratic variation of the girl at her toilette, a theme that dominated his work in the 1940s. My interest in the new near-billion dollar MoMA sagged on learning that the contemporized shrine had left its Balthuses in storage. I am fantasizing surely, but it pleases me to think that this declaration of private ownership is an intended rebuke to the curators four blocks south. The security guard was unforthcoming about the display and nixed any hope of access to the room. So, New Yorkers, take what you can get. The paintings are 15 or so feet back from the window, close enough to recognize but too far to embrace. Press your nose to the glass and eat your heart out. This review was first published in The New York Sun [www.nysun.com] December 30, 2004.

Her pictures are notable for their refreshing simplicity, vigorous treatment, and pleasing color. She excelled also as a pastelist and etcher, and her drypoints and color prints are greatly admired. She is well represented in public and private galleries in the United States. She followed her dreams and became an artist. She was born on May 22, 1844, and lived in Europe for several years as a child. Her family returned to the United States and, at age 16, Mary attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Four years later she decided she couldn't learn any more in Philadelphia, so her parents let her return to Europe. There she studied the techniques of the masters in Rome, Seville, Antwerp, and Paris. Mary received the chance of a lifetime in 1877 when the famous French painter, Edgar Degas, asked her to join a group of painters that included now-famous artists like Manet and Renoir. Their style of painting is called Impressionism. They used primary colors and short brush strokes in their work. They recognized Mary's kindred spirit and powerful talent and invited her to exhibit in the Impressionist art shows.

(Contributors) More on poetry from The Atlantic Monthly. Mary Cassatt: The Letter by Joan I. Siegel Hear Joan I. Siegel read this poem (in RealAudio All day it is with her like a song even as she slices a breakfast orange, brushes her hair, shuts a window. She is listening to it when company calls and she talks about yesterday's news, pours tea, says good-bye at the door. Then, alone with it finally in late afternoon, she puts it on the desk, arranges it as though she were putting flowers in a vase. Then she slips it into the envelope, seals it with her tongue. The print Gathering Fruit by Impressionist Mary Cassatt is one of a series of works by the artist that relates closely to her commissioned mural for the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 on the theme of the "Modern Woman." The original mural (which now survives only in photographic reproductions) was composed of three allegorical scenes entitled: "Arts, Music, Dancing;" "Young Women Plucking the Fruits of Knowledge or Science;" and "Young Girls Pursuing Fame." Gathering Fruit is based on the mural's central panel showing women and young girls harvesting fruit in an orcharda symbolic gathering and sharing of the "fruits of knowledge."

Cassatt, Mary
Mary Cassatt born May 22, 1844, Allegheny City [now part of Pittsburg], Pa., U.S.
American painter and printmaker who exhibited with the Impressionists. In 1874 Cassatt chose Paris as her permanent residence and established her studio there. She shared with the Impressionists an interest in experiment and in using bright colours inspired by the out-of-doors. Edgar Degas became her friend; his style and that of Gustave Courbet inspired her own. Degas was known to admire her drawing especially, and at his request she exhibited with the Impressionists in 1879 and joined them in shows in 1880, 1881, and 1886. Like Degas, Cassatt showed great mastery of drawing, and both artists preferred unposed asymmetrical compositions. Cassatt also was innovative and inventive in exploiting the medium of pastels.
