Mary Cassatt wants to be a great Impressionist painter. It is the late 1870s and she has moved from the U.S. to Paris, France to pursue her art. She is preparing for an important exhibition when her brother and his rambunctious family unexpectedly arrive for a visit. " Mary Cassatt: American Impressionist " is a fictionalized account of that visit in which, after several false starts, Cassatt establishes a lasting relationship with her nephew and nieces. Mary Cassatt became one of the most important U.S. painters of the late 1800s.
The TeachWithMovies.com Learning Guide to this film helps teachers and parents introduce children to Mary Cassatt, setting out where the historical truth ends and fiction begins, providing background information about Mary Cassatt, and suggesting discussion questions. The Guide also contains reproductions of her work.

Mary Cassatt's color prints - renowned 19th-century woman artist
Magazine Antiques Oct, 1998 by Elliot Bostwick Davis True to her observation that there are two ways for the painter, "the broad and easy one and the narrow and hard one,"[1] Mary Cassatt set herself the grueling task of combining drypoint, aquatint, soft-ground etching, and wiping the plate by hand to create the polished and elegant color prints of 1890 and 1891 generally known to connoisseurs as "the Ten." The physical toll Cassatt endured during the printing, for which she engaged a Monsieur Leroy, was recounted by her close friend, the collector Louisine W. Havermeyer (1855-1929):

I. BIOGRAPHY
Mary Stevenson Cassatt was born on May 23, 1844 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, to Katherine Kelso Johnston and Robert Simpson Cassatt. She was the youngest daughter of five siblings. The Cassatts were landed Pennsylvanian gentry who lived comfortably off of their father’s successful brokerage career. When she was seven, the family moved to Paris and then on to Germany. In 1855, the youngest Cassatt, Robbie, died from bone cancer, which prompted the family to move back to the United States and settle in Philadelphia. After five years of an expressed interest in art, Mary Cassatt, at the age of 16, was ultimately granted permission by her parents to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (PAFA). During Cassatt’s day, both men and women were allowed to view art galleries and copy works of art side by side, which previously was prohibited. Therefore, her parents had to be somewhat liberal in their thoughts to permit their youngest daughter to pursue an interest in art making. During her years at PAFA, Cassatt was surrounded by a group of talented students which included the painter Thomas Eakins, sculptor Howard Roberts and the engraver Emily Sartain.

Brief Biography of Mary Cassatt (Pennsylvania newspaper, 1909) The ancestry of Mary Cassatt were pioneer settlers and natives of Adams County and this county can look with pride on the accomplishments of the greatest American woman painter. Mary Cassatt is the great-great-grand-daughter of Francis Cassatt, a French Hugenot who settled in Straban township in 1764. She is the great-grand-daughter of David Cassatt who came to this country with his father and lived and died in Straban township. She is the grand-daughter of Dennis Cassatt who was born and lived in Straban township, and she is the daughter of Robert Cassatt, the great railroad man of Pittsburgh, identified with the Pennsylvania Railroad during his whole life, and she is the sister of the late A. J. Cassatt President of that railroad. A number of her ancestors lie buried in the Low Batch graveyard on the road between Hunterstown and New Oxford. Although art has advanced with us until it has gained serious recognition by all other nations, Mary Cassatt still holds her place as the "Most Eminent of American Women Painters." In her portrayal of motherhood and childhood she stands alone. "No one else" it has been well said "ever portrayed childhood as she. No one else has observed and made her own the thousand and one little gestures of babyhood."

Mary Cassatt was born in Pennsylvania in 1844. She was the fourth child of the five children born to the family. Her family traveled a lot and she had visited many countries by the time she was 10 years old.
In those days, women did not have professions, and there were very few women artists. Her family did not approve when she decided that she would become an artist.
She studied first in Philadelphia and then went to Paris to study painting. She admired the work of Edgar Degas, and was able to meet him.
Her family thought she should not be living in Paris alone, so they and her sister, Lydia, came to live with her. Her sister was ill and died from a disease. Mary missed her very much. Her parents became elderly and she cared for them, but she still found time to paint.
Though she never had children of her own, she loved children and painted portraits of the children of her friends and family. She became known as the painter of mothers and children . You can view some of her beautiful paintings through the links on this page.
She lost her sight in 1914 and was not able to paint during the later years of her life.

Introduction Born into a wealthy Pittsburgh family, Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) was one of the new breed of nineteenth-century expatriate women who went to Paris to study art and stayed there permanently. Now recognized as one of America's great impressionists, Cassatt was not well-known in America until she was asked to contribute to the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition and Fair in Chicago by painting a 58 x 12 foot mural for the north tympanum over the entrance to the Gallery of Honor in the Women's Building Unfortunately, after the Women's Building was later pulled down, Cassatt's mural was lost. However, some photographs were taken and crudely colored prints made of her mural. In addition, while she was creating it in 1892 and for the next year or two, she also made a series of prints and paintings playing variations on the mural motifs The goal of the Women's Building was to showcase the advancement of women throughout history. The assigned theme for Cassatt's mural was "Modern Woman." At the opposite end of the Gallery of Honor was a complementary mural on "Primitive Woman" created by

Mary Cassatt, after 1900
Frederick Arnold Sweet Papers, Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C. "I doubt if you know the effort it is to paint! The concentration it requires, to compose your picture, the difficulty of posing the models, of choosing the color scheme, of expressing the sentiment and telling your story! The trying and trying again and again and oh, the failures, when you have to begin all over again! The long months spent in effort upon effort, making sketch after sketch. Oh, my dear! No one but those who have painted a picture know what it costs in time and strength!"
"After a time, you get keyed up and it 'goes', you paint quickly and do more in a few weeks than in the preceding weary months. When I am en train , nothing can stop me and it seems easy to paint, but I know very well it is the result of my previous efforts."

Mary Cassatt, american impressionist
Mary Cassatt was the one of the few female Impressionistic painters and one of the few Americans to break into this group.
Impressionism was the art form favored by an elite group consisting mostly of Frenchmen. Names like Renoir, Degas, and Monet are recognized as some of history's greatest artists. The fraternity of French Impressionism was invaded by a lone American woman Mary Cassatt. Mary Stevenson Cassatt was born on May 22, 1845 in what is today called Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When she was fifteen, Mary entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. (By this time, her family had moved across the state and lived in the Philadelphia area.) At the academy, Mary focused on drawing human figures. Having studied under artists who were themselves taught in France and otherwise influenced by the frequent French art exhibits held in Philadelphia, Mary decided to go to Europe to further her studies in Paris. In 1867, Mary submitted some of her work to be juried by the Paris Salon, a very important art exhibit at that time. She was turned down in this first attempt, but a year later, her painting, "La Mandoline," was accepted. Her first appearance in the Paris Salon coincided with the first appearance of the controversial Impressionists. This was her first connection with this art group. Despite her first major success, Mary returned to Pennsylvania when she was 26 years old, with the intention of settling down and perhaps opening her own art studio. However, Philadelphia lacked the ingredients that Cassatt felt necessary for serious art making outstanding collections to study, exciting modern art, picturesque models. When her family moved to rural Hollidaysburg in the western part of Pennsylvania, she was forced to close her Philadelphia gallery. Living in a small town, away from the art world, frustrated Mary, and she longed to return to Europe.

Mary Cassatt:
An American Female Painter in Paris
American painter Mary Cassatt was born in 1844 in Pennsylvania; she went on to become one of the most prominent female painters in the Impressionist art movement Mary Cassatt was exposed to art early on, first by traveling in Europe with her family and then studying art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as a young woman. She continued to travel on her own and then moved permanently to Paris in her thirties. There she became influenced by—and directly involved in—the Impressionist movement.

"The bacchante... offered the cherished opportunity to display young girls with few, or no clothes on, while invoking the semireligious sanction of antiquity. Cassatt, painting in Parma under the clear eye of Correggio, did not succumb to the temptation of easy eroticism. Her bacchante is immediately a real person. The vine leaves in her hair are underplayed, the cymbals are more than props, they are closely observed in their well-used, slightly battered state. The dancer's fixed intensity of expression reveals well enough the transport sought by the wine-god's devotees. Cassatt herself emerges in the powerful instinct for the bones beneath the flesh and for the flesh in light and shade."

Mary Cassatt always wanted to be an artist. But to reach her goal, she had to overcome many barriers. At the time Mary lived, people frowned on girls from wealthy families having a career. Her parents did not want her living the “odd” life they thought artists lived. Few art schools even accepted girls and women as students. And the “art world” held one idea of what painting should be but Mary had a different idea. Mary did not give in to these prejudices. After much travel, study, and hard work, she won over her parents and the critics. Today Mary Cassatt’s “impressionist” paintings hang in the best museums and collections throughout the world. She helped change attitudes that for so long kept women from their dreams. She even played a part in winning the right for women to vote. The Mary Cassatt doll is shown here in a dress and bonnet similar to what she wore in one of her self portraits. She comes with a little basket she might have carried food or art supplies in and a paint set and artist pad for you to use.
