Artist, writer
Emily Carr
Archives and Library Canada 4282

Emily Carr grew up in a strict household in Victoria, B.C., where her English parents had settled. Orphaned in her early teens, she managed to convince her guardians to let her study art in San Francisco at the California School of Design. During her later studies in England and France she began to develop a distinctive style of painting that produced bold and colourful canvases that would eventually make her a Canadian icon. But Emily Carr's journey of self-discovery was a painful one. Unable to support herself through her art, she focused on managing an apartment house in Victoria for 15 years. It wasn't until 1927 that Emily Carr came to the attention of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, and was welcomed by the Group of Seven painters when she exhibited some of her work. Renewed by the contact with these talented artists, Emily Carr began to paint vivid pictures of the natural world and West Coast native peoples. It was only near the end of her life that Emily Carr began to be recognized as an exceptional painter as well as a writer. Her first book, Klee Wyck, won a Governor General's Award. Her paintings now hang in galleries across Canada and the fascinating life of Emily Carr is celebrated in a multitude of books and films.

Emily Carr Young, spirited and rebellious, Emily Carr escaped a strict Victorian household to study art in the Paris of Picasso and Matisse. In middle age, she shook the dust of acceptable society from her shoes and began a passionate journey into the wilderness of British Columbia; the power of her genius made her one of the twentieth century's great painters. Fortunately, she also wrote. In her books, her warmth, her humanity, her sense of fun and the ridiculous combine to present a self-portrait of a remarkable woman and artist.– Mary Pratt

Emily Carr - Skidegate, 1912 Emily Carr is widely regarded as the dominant figure in British Columbia art in the first half of the twentieth century. Carr first met members of the Group of Seven in 1927 when she exhibited her work in the exhibition West Coast Art: Native and Modern. On her way to Ottawa for the exhibition, she met Frederick Varley, Arthur Lismer, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald and, most importantly, Lawren S. Harris. Famously, Lawren Harris told Carr, who had felt unappreciated as an artist, "you are one of us." This acceptance re-energized her career.
Emily Carr and the Group of Seven includes works from the Vancouver Art Gallery's collection and private loans, with key works by Carr and members of the Group. The exhibition acknowledges the significance of Carr's relationship to these artists and her important contribution to modernism in Canada.

Emily Carr is known throughout the world for her artwork but she was also an award winning writer.
In 1941 Emily Carr won the Governor General's Award for general literature for her first collection of stories, Klee Wyck however, she is better known throughout the world for her paintings of native carvings, wild storms and British Columbia's forests and coastlines. Born in Victoria, British Columbia on December 13, 1871, Carr was the second youngest of nine children. She studied art at the California School of Design in San Francisco and then, because of a lack of money, she returned to Vancouver to teach children's art classes. In 1899 Carr left British Columbia once again, this time she traveled to London, England to study at the Westminster School of Art. At this time she also studied sketching in Cornwall. In 1902 she became seriously ill and was forced to spend much of 1903 and 1904 in a sanatorium in Suffolk.

Description: Emily Carr is one of Canada’s most beloved artists and is world renown for her rich, colourful paintings of British Columbia’s west coast. She also wrote several best-selling books including "The Book of Small," which recounts many of her childhood memories in the family home at 207 Government St. now called Emily Carr House. The house has been standing since 1864 and served the family well over much of that time. Now it belongs to the public and has been put to good use as both a museum and gallery. Emily Carr was brought into this world during a fierce snowstorm on the night of December 13, 1871, in an old wooden bed that still sits in what later became her bedroom. Like the other 10 rooms open to public viewing, Emily’s bedroom has been carefully restored and redecorated in order to appear as close as possible to its original state. Even the smallest details are addressed for example, the paint had been wallpapered over in several rooms, so the restorers had to painstakingly strip off the newer layers in order to reach the original. In one case they even used an ultra-violet light to find out what the parlour’s wallpaper had looked like. Thanks to the huge efforts of the restoration team and the museum’s curators, a trip to Emily Carr House is like travelling back to the late 1800's when the Carr family lived, worked and played within these very walls.

Emily Carr
Emily Carr (December 13, 1871- March 2, 1945) was a Canadian artist and writer. She was born in Victoria, British Columbia, and moved to San Francisco in 1890 to study art after the death of her parents. In 1899 she travelled to England to deepen her studies where she spent time at the Westminster School of Art in London and at various studio schools in Cornwall and elsewhere. In 1910, she spent a year studying art at the Academie Colarossi in Paris and elsewhere in France before moving back to British Columbia permanently the following year. Carr was most heavily influenced by the landscape and First Nations cultures of British Columbia, and Alaska. Having first spent time in a neighbouring native community in 1898, in 1908 she was inspired by a visit to Skagway to began to paint the totem poles of the coastal Haida, Tsimshian, Tlingit and other communities, in an attempt to record and learn from as many as possible. She was obliged by financial considerations to return permanently to Victoria with a few years in Vancouver, both of which towns were, at that time, conservative artistically. Influenced by styles such as postimpressionism and the Fauve School, her work was alien to those around her and remained unknown to and unrecognized by the greater art world for many years. For more than a decade she worked as a potter, dog breeder and boarding house landlady having given up on her artistic career.
