Regarding Emily
Taking a fresh look at Emily Carr

Emily Carr in her studio with Sunshine and Tumult
c. 1936 Photo Harold Mortimer-Lamb. Courtesy National Gallery of Canada. One of Canada’s great artists and most fascinating characters, Carr was what could charitably be called an eccentric. “An oddment and a natural-born solitaire” was how she described herself, “contrary from the start.” The images of the West Coast captured in her work heralded the rise of a modern and distinctly Canadian aesthetic. But even as her acclaim and reputation grew, Carr preferred to see herself as “the little lady on the edge of nowhere.” Carr was inspired by sources as diverse as native carvers and the Post-Impressionists . An important later influence was the Group of Seven. Upon meeting them in 1927, she wrote this in her journal: “Oh, these men, this Group of Seven, what have they created? — a world stripped of earthiness, shorn of fretting details, purged, purified; a naked soul, pure and unashamed; lovely spaces filled with serenity.” Charlie Hill, curator of Canadian art for Ottawa’s

Review by A. Edwardsson. excerpt:
The old ladies were panting slightly when they stepped into Emily's studio. For a moment they stood sniffing the roast beef smell and smiling at one another. Alice took off her hat and hung it on a peg. "Where are the dogs?" she asked.
"In the yard," Emily answered. Alice raised her eyebrows in surprise. At least three griffons were usually present at her younger sister's parties. Lizzie looked sharply at the table.
"Where's the rat?" she asked.
"Shut up in the attic,' Emily said. "I know you don't like Suzie to be on the table at meals."
"Humph," said Lizzie. 'That never stopped you before.' This tale of a mischievous pet monkey is aimed at a much older crowd than Rey's Curious George books. Author Constance Horne

emily carr and her dog
Emily Carr (Canadian artist and writer, 1871-1945) was very fond of pets, and made part of her living as a dog breeder at one time. She gained a great deal of love and comfort from animals in the course of her life, as this photo may show (it may take a while to come up, be patient). Look her up on Wikipedia - the first thing you see is another photo of her and her dogs!
Carr was a most interesting, independent person and there are loads of fascinating places about her on the web. Start here if you are curious. Posted by curator at 6:52 AM

It is perhaps the least Vancouver sounding of all of the songs that will follow in this list, owing more to the Edmonton birthplace of the band, but it's subject matter holds true to anyone whose ever found themselves in Vancouver running away from the middle of the country.
- "Let the Ass Bray" by Spirit of the West [ wp ]: What's more Vancouver than being miffed at an indie band refusing to enjoy their fame and just shutting up and playing their hit song? Years before Matthew Good was told to shut up and play guitar Vancouver band Spirit of the West was using a symphony orchestra to record a song about Thom Yorke being spoiled by Radiohead's early "Creep" fame. One wonders what they thought of the Radiohead movie Meeting People Is Easy
- "Vancouver Divorce" by Gordon Downie [ gd ]: Gordon Downie's first solo album sort of got lost in the fact that he was also releasing a book of poetry to go with it, which is about as far away from the hockey arena venues of his day job in the Tragically Hip as you can get. When it stays on track though

Fiercely independent and complex, Emily Carr is a rebel, a recluse and a feminist before her time. And on March 2, 1945, the passionate painter and writer dies at her home in Victoria, B.C. Her distinctive palette is inspired by an insatiable fascination with native culture and the landscape of Carr's cherished British Columbia. And, as this clip illustrates, it was her eccentricity and a friendship with the Group of Seven that brought Carr the prominence and reputation she holds today. Did You Know? She was the second of nine children, and by 1888, both parents and oldest sister, Edith, had passed away. These trips inspired Carr to paint a collection of totem pole images for which she would become well known.

Emily Carr
Yesterday, I had lunch with my friend Carrie . We used to work together in a leadership programme for high school students.
After lunch we went to the Emily Carr Exhibition at the Glenbow Museum. Emily Carr was most heavily influenced by the landscape and First Nations cultures of British Columbia, and Alaska.
Influenced by styles such as post-impressionism and Fauvism, her work was alien to those around her and remained unknown to and unrecognized by the greater art world for many years. For more than a decade she worked as a potter, dog breeder and boarding house landlady, having given up on her artistic career.
In the 1920s she came into contact with members of the Group of Seven, including Lawren Harris, whose support was invaluable. The Nuu-chah-nulth of Vancouver Island's west coast had named her Klee Wyck, "the laughing one." Now that's a good nickname.
I've seen Emily Carr's paintings before at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the McMichael Collection and the National Art Gallery in Ottawa. I particularly enjoy her work from 1930-35 when she stops painting totem polesobjects of art in themselvesand starts painting West Coast nature.
Growing up we had an Emily Carr print in our house which my mother brought with her from Vancouver before she met my dad. My mother died when I was very young and Emily Carr's art work, so representative of the West Coast, and often mysterious, reminds me of the enigmatic relationship I have with my mom.
