Carr, Emily. Growing Pains
As can be seen in the quote above, Emily exhibited artistic talent from an early age. She began art lessons while still in school, receiving instruction from several of Victoria's resident artists. Some of her friends who also attended these lessons travelled to London, England to further their studies. Emily would like to have followed them, but unfortunately Emily's parents died while she was a teenager and finances were tight. After sending entrance drawings to the California School of Design, and being accepted for registration there, she was able to pursuade her guardian to enroll her in art studies. At the age of nineteen, Emily travelled to San Francisco and remained there as a student until December 1893 when she returned to Victoria. Over the next few years Emily taught art to children and saved her money to cover the costs of continuing her formal studies. In August 1899 she left Victoria for England and the Westminster School of Art. She soon found that living in London did not agree with her health and so moved on first to Cornwall, and later, to the art colony at Bushey, just outside London. In 1904, after a traumatic final year where she was hospitalized for many months, Emily returned to Victoria. "I had not learned very much, not half what I had intended to absorb once I got into the old country."

Emily Carr's Vision of the Pacific Northwest
At the same time that the art of the Group of Seven was gaining popularity, Emily Carr was struggling to make a career for herself on the Canadian west coast. In some ways, Carr's art was very similar to the art of the Group of Seven and she eventually became close friends with Lawren Harris and other prominent Canadian nationalists of the day, who treated her as a kindred spirit. But, Carr's art and vision of Canada have also been called unique . Her family background, the region of the country in which she painted, the subjects she chose to paint, and her own ideas about Canada and Canadian art combined to produced a vision of the Canadian west coast which remains popular today. This vision and the art it led Carr to create distinguishes her as the best-know woman artist in Canadian history. Carr was born in Victoria, BC, on 13 December 1881. She died there in 1945. By the time of her death, she had become a well-recognized west coast artist and award-winning author whose fame has continued to increase. Carr was not always this well-known. Her struggle to make a place for herself in the world of Canadian art was long and, at times, frustrating. Carr was born into a middle-class, sternly religious family. She was a vivacious child who loved the wilderness, but who also upset her family by behaving in ways which were, at the time, considered inappropriate for young women. She began to take drawing lessons at the age of nine and by her teens had decided to become an artist. When her parents died, she left Victoria to study art in San Francisco, returned to British Columbia in 1893, and then travelled to London and Paris to continue her education.

Odds and Ends
Painting Odds and Ends , by Emily Carr
"I think that one's art is a growth inside one. I do not think one can explain growth. It is silent and subtle. One does not keep digging up a plant to see how it grows." (Carr, Hundreds and Thousands, p. 268) Emily Carr always celebrated her independence and difference from the world around her. This is apparent in all facets of her life, her art and her writing. Dressed in her usual attire, with a net cap covering her hair and wearing a loose-fitting smock, her lifestyle and appearance gained her the reputation of a lonely and struggling artist. Carr changed the way Canadians view the rugged grandness of the forest landscapes of the British Columbia coast. Although her art was not fully esteemed in Canada until her later years, it remains a classic example of the splendor and distinctiveness of Canadian art. Born in 1871, in Victoria, British Columbia, to British parents, Emily was the eighth of nine children. Her parents died when she was young, leaving her strict, oldest sister Edith to care for the family. Emily, who began drawing lessons at the age of eight, asked her financial guardian for permission and monetary support to attend art school in San Francisco, at the California School of Design. She stayed in San Francisco for three years. She also studied in London and the English countryside, for five years, under many different teachers. Then, after a brief period of teaching children and the Ladies Art Club classes in Vancouver, she travelled to France to study under Harry Gibb and Douglas Ferguson.

Born December 13th 1871 – Died March 2nd 1945. Canadian Artist and Writer: Emily Carr studied in San Francisco in 1889-95, and in 1899 she travelled to England, where she was involved with the St. Ives group and with Hubert von Herkomer's private school. She lived in France in 1910 where the work of the Fauves influenced the colourism of her work and she came into contact with Frances Hodgkins. Discouraged by her lack of artistic success, she returned to Victoria where she came close to giving up art altogether. However, her contact with the Group of Seven in 1930 resurrected her interest in art, and throughout the 1930s she specialized in scenes from the lives and rituals of Native Americans. She also showed her awareness of Canadian native culture through a number of works representing the British Columbian rainforest. She lived among the native Americans to research her subjects. Many of her Expressionistic paintings represent totem poles and other artefacts of Indian culture. Emily Carr Chronology of Paintings

Back to Realism / Naturalism Through her evocative and impressionistic paintings of the West Coast forests and First Nations people, Emily Carr is today one of Canada's best-known painters. However, her story is an all-too-familiar one of an artist who struggled for recognition in her own lifetime, only to be lionized in the years following her death. Emily Carr was born in Victoria in 1871 to prosperous parents, both of whom died when she was young. She was brought up by her family and at the age of 16 was forced to make a living from teaching, as it was felt that her desire to attend art school in San Francisco was "unladylike". Ladylike or not, two of her paintings have been reproduced on Canadian stamps, showing her characteristic strong brush stokes and dark colours, which style she developed when studying in Paris 1910-1911. To the best of my knowledge these two stamps are the only Carr-issues world wide.
    • Canada 1991. Emily Carr: "Forest, British Columbia", painted 1931-1932. The stamp is part of Canada's famous art series "Masterpieces of Canadian Art", started 1988. Scott # 1310. The background of the stamp is shiny silver, which appears light grey on a scan.
