Anonymous painting attributed to Caravaggio
Artwork contains signs of Baroque master’s trademarks, experts agree
ROME - A casual glance at an auction catalog set a British art historian on the path to discovering the brushstrokes of Caravaggio on a painting previously attributed to an anonymous follower of the Baroque master. Experts in Italy believe a copy of Caravaggio’s “The Cardsharps” which surfaced at a London auction last year is an earlier version of the 1594 painting now displayed at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. The previously anonymous work was bought at a Sotheby’s auction in December 2006 by art historian and collector Denis Mahon and will be first displayed to the public in the Sicilian city of Trapani at a Caravaggio exhibit starting Saturday, organizers said. Mahon was at a restaurant when he spotted a painting attributed to a Caravaggio follower in a catalog and quickly linked it to the already known “Cardsharps,” said Mina Gregori, an Italian art historian who worked with the British expert to verify his initial hunch. “It was intuition or a stroke of genius,” Gregori told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

Sometimes, my life seems to be little more than a never-ending quest for the ultimate painting effect plugin. Perhaps it would be easier if I simply gave up and learned to paint properly, instead of wasting hours trying to persuade the computer to do it for me. Sadly, though, I'm one of those people who has a passion for the graphic arts and a deep creative urge, but without any actual talent to back it up. I suppose I'll just have to keep writing plugins instead. This one is a simple 'oil-painting' effect, with just four sliders; in a misguided effort to express my latent artistic impulses, I've given them whimsical names... think of them as defining the personality of your own personal virtual artist. It was this kind of thinking, I suppose, that led me to name the plugin in honour of the enigmatic Italian renaissance artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio - which was rather pretentious of me, really. If he phones me and complains, I'll change the name. Creativity Well, I could have labelled this one "primary convolution kernel radius" I suppose, but it probably wouldn't have fitted onto the dialog. The image tends to become more impressionistic as you move this slider to the right.

Caravaggio Art
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571 - 1610), an Italian Baroque artist. He was active in Rome, Naples, Malta and Sicily between 1593 and 1610. Caravaggio was considered enigmatic, fascinating, rebellious, and dangerous. Caravaggio was the best exemplar of naturalistic painting in the early 17th century. His use of models from the lower classes of society in his early secular works and later religious compositions appealed to the taste for realism, simplicity, and piety in art. Equally important is his introduction of dramatic light-and-dark effects - termed chiaroscuro - into his works. Caravaggio put the oscuro (shadows) into chiaroscuro. Chiaroscuro was practiced long before he came on the scene, but it was Caravaggio who made the technique definitive, darkening the shadows and transfixing the subject in a blinding shaft of light. With this went the acute observation of physical and psychological reality which formed the ground both for his immense popularity and for his frequent problems with his religious commissions. Many Caravaggio's religious works feature violent struggles, grotesque decapitations

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius:
Selections Annotated and Explained

Russell McNeil, PhD
Editor, Malaspina Great Books
In 1862 the English literary critic and poet Matthew Arnold described Marcus Aurelius as "the most beautiful figure in history." The Stoicism of Aurelius is grounded in rationality and rests solidly on an ethical approach rooted in nature. Stoicism promises real happiness and joy in this life and a serenity that can never be soured by personal misfortune. This philosophy has universal appeal with practical implications on problems ranging from climate change and terrorism to the personal management of sickness, aging, depression and addiction. I truly believe that the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius has much to offer us now...(Click on book cover for more)

Caravaggio (1573-1610). Probably the most revolutionary artist of his time, the Italian painter Caravaggio abandoned the rules that had guided a century of artists before him. They had idealized the human and religious experience. He was born Michelangelo Merisi on Sept. 28, 1573, in Caravaggio, Italy. As an adult he would become known by the name of his birthplace. Orphaned at age 11, he was apprenticed to the painter Simone Peterzano of Milan for four years. At some time between 1588 and 1592, Caravaggio went to Rome and worked as an assistant to painters of lesser skill. About 1595 he began to sell his paintings through a dealer. The dealer brought Caravaggio to the attention of Cardinal Francesco del Monte. Through the cardinal, Caravaggio was commissioned, at age 24, to paint for the church of San Luigi dei Francesi. In its Contarelli Chapel Caravaggio's realistic naturalism first fully appeared in three scenes he created of the life of St. Matthew. The works caused public outcry, however, because of their realistic and dramatic nature.
