25. Caillebotte Gustave - Biography
Gustave Caillebotte (August 19, 1848 February 21, 1894), was a French painter and supporter of the Impressionist movement in art.
http://www.isabel.com/gallery/reproduction/c/caillebotte/record.html
CAILLEBOTTE Gustave
1848 - 1894 (French)
Gustave Caillebotte (August 19, 1848 - February 21, 1894), was a French painter and supporter of the Impressionist movement in art.
Caillebotte's painting style seems to belong to the school of realism, although he helped organize the first Impressionist painting exhibition and was himself an enthusiastic collector of Impressionist works. Caillebotte inherited a sizable fortune after his father's death in 1874, which aided in his patronage.
Caillebotte's painting themes were catholic. For example, he painted portraits and interior scenes, urban life, still lifes, and landscapes and seascapes. For many years, Caillebotte's reputation as a painter was superseded by his reputation as a supporter of the art. However, art historians are now re-evaluatinng his contribution to the field.
Caillebotte's, "L'Homme au balcon, boulevard Haussmann," painted in 1880, was sold for more than US$14.3 million in 2000.

One of the lesser known impressionist painters, caillebotte, was one of the first to be influenced by the medium of photography.

Caillebotte, Gustave
Gustave Caillebotte, b. Aug. 19, 1848, d. Feb. 21, 1894, was a French painter and a generous patron of the impressionists , whose own works, until recently, were neglected. He was an engineer by profession, but also attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He met Edgar Degas Claude Monet , and Pierre Auguste Renoir in 1874 and helped organize the first impressionist exhibition in Paris that same year. He participated in later shows and painted some 500 works in a more realistic style than that of his friends. Caillebotte's most intriguing paintings are those of the broad, new Parisian boulevards. The boulevards were painted from high vantage points and were populated with elegantly clad figures strolling with the expressionless intensity of somnambulists, as in Boulevard Vu d'en Haut (1880; private collection, Paris). Caillebotte's superb collection of impressionist paintings was left to the French government on his death. With considerable reluctance the government accepted part of the collection. Modern artists, also influenced by new scientific theories of color, by contemporary photography and by the dramatic perspectives of Japanese prints, set about to destroy Renaissance canons of composition and space. One such method consisted of cropping the pictorial surface to evoke fragments of reality. When Caillebotte presented Floor Scrapers at an Impressionist exhibition, his bold perspective and virtuoso tonal control was considered vulgar and was greeted with scorn by the traditionalists. Painted in shades of brown, beige and gray, it's ocher-based golden highlights heightened the intensity of the workers. Today, the painting is considered a major work of the period and the depiction of interior day laborers maintains its relevancy in our own time.
The effects of idle lives on a new economic class is a recurrent theme in Caillebotte's works. Depicted either contemplating the external urban scene or casually posed amongst luxurious surroundings, fashionably dressed men and women read books and newspapers, played the piano, wrote in their studies or engaged in needlework. Their homes were the symbol of stability and acquired wealth and Caillebotte highlighted the lush textures and designs of their interiors. In Luncheon, a table laden with gleaming crystal and silver treats objects valued by the new bourgeoisie.

Gustave Caillebotte BACK
Caillebotte was French Impressionist painter and an early collector of Impressionist paintings. Caillebotte studied under Bonnat and submitted his first painting(Floor Scrapers) to the Salon in 1875 and it was promptly rejected. He participated in three of the Impressionist exhibits. His tightly rendered forms and subdued color schemes, however contrasted markedly with the loose brushwork and heightened palettes preferred by his fellow artists. In 1874 after his father's death he inherited a considerable fortune. He utilized his financial resources to become one the Impressionists primary patrons, acquiring an extensive collection. In his later years he spent less time painting and more time sailing and working in his garden. Caillebotte died of pulmonary congestion in 1894. In his will he left his entire collection to the French government providing it hang in the Musee du Luxembourg first. Today forty works from his collection hang in the Musee d'Orsay.
An excerpt from Gustave Caillebotte by Rodolphe Rapetti:
Caillebotte's participation in the second impressionist exhibition proved decisive. Exhibiting for the first time with painters whose cause he had made his own over the preceding two years, the artist presented an ensemble reflective of his ambitions, one that strikes us today as having been composed entirely of major works. Among these, Young Man at His Window combines a depiction of the city, not unlike similar views painted by other impressionists, with the figure of a spectator, a dark silhouette perhaps inspired by interior scenes on which Caillebotte was also working at the time. The focus on brilliant exterior light and its penetration into an apartment, the reflection in the window, the figure shown contre-jour, and the plunging view onto the street indicate an agenda stressing novelty as well as a search for realism.

Home Virtual Museum Individual Artists : Gustave Caillebotte A wealthy bachelor and trained naval architect, Gustave Caillebotte became a very important, often critical, contributor to the Impressionist movement. His business skills and financial assistance were important to the survival of Impressionism. In addition to his supporting role, Caillebotte was also a very highly skilled artist - his ambitious paintings are as powerful and daring as those of his Impressionist friends. In later years, he became increasingly less-interested in art, giving it up almost entirely to pursue his interests in gardening and yachting. However, his collection of Impressionist paintings were donated to the state upon his death, and now form the backbone of the Impressionist collection of present-day France.

Gustave Caillebotte An important champion of French Impressionism, Gustave Caillebotte created a number of inventive images of contemporary urban life and boating subjects that harmonized with his own increasing devotion to the sport of yacht racing. This large painting, from a series of seven boating pictures done at his family estate on the Yerres River, depicts two one-person shells skimming over shimmering water. Sky and river form a harmony of soft hues that create a fluid pattern across the canvas, while the landscape space itself is anchored by three vertical trees that punctuate the far riverbank and cast their reflections on the water. The effect is one of transparency and movement, structured by an underlying compositional armature. Gustave Caillebotte
