Theodore Earl Butler (1861-1936)
Ohio-born Theodore Earl Butler began his career studying at the Art Students League in New York under William Merritt Chase. He then traveled to Paris, studied at the Academie Julian under Lefebvre, and won an honorable mention at the 1888 Salon de Paris. Butler first summered in Giverny in 1888. After several visits to the town, he settled there in 1892.
In his first decade in Giverny, Butler associated with the group of American expatriates, which included Philip Leslie Hale and Theodore Robinson, who were drawn to the natural beauty of the town, its proximity to Paris, and the presence of longtime resident Claude Monet. While Monet generally did not associate with or teach the younger Americans, Butler grew more familiar than most; in 1892 he married Monet's stepdaughter, Suzanne Hosched©, and he and Monet eventually became close. The wedding of Butler and Suzanne Hosched© is the subject of Robinson's The Wedding March (1892, Terra Museum of American Art).
After Suzanne died in 1899, Butler again married into the Monet family, this time to another stepdaughter, Marthe. He spent much of his career in Giverny where he painted local scenes, but he also painted in Yport, Veules Les Roses, Honfleur, and Paris. His two children were often the subject of his Giverny paintings, and his home was a popular destination for his fellow artists, such as Philip Hale and William Hart. Butler exhibited at the Paris Salon, NAD, PAFA, Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Independants, the Turn International Exposition, and the Armory Show in New York. .

Theodore Butler
Theodore Earl Butler was one of America's most innovative Post-Impressionist painters. Butler did not receive the recognition he deserved in his lifetime.
Butler was born in 1861. He began his training as a student at the Art Students League in New York City in 1882 with William Merritt Chase. Finishing his studies, Butler moved to Paris where he exhibited in Salon de Paris in 1888, and won an Honorable Mention for the painting, "La Veuve". After this reward, Butler had some important one-man exhibitions at Vollard and Bernheim Jeune in Paris, and Durand Ruel in New York.
He studied in various art academies in Paris, including studies under Claude Monet. In July 1892, he married Suzanne Hoschede-Monet, Claude Monet's stepdaughter. Butler was strongly influenced by the French Impressionists. When his first wife passed away, Butler would eventually marry a second of Monet's stepdaughters. Like Monet, Butler actively painted the landscape near Giverny and his home was well known as a gathering place for expatriate artists.
In the summer of 1888, he discovered Giverny, the village that was to become the impressionist artists' colony. Initially inspired by Monet, Butler surpassed the impressionist aesthetic. Using the French painter's high-keyed palette as a springboard, he developed his own technique, and a style that forecasts elements of the Nabi movement, such as the simplification of forms, a use of pronounced contours, and flattened spatial effects.

http://www.tfaoi.com/aa/5aa/5aa280.htm
Editor's note: The following essay was rekeyed and reprinted on April 8, 2005 in Resource Library with permission of the author and the Columbus Museum of Art The essay was excerpted from the illustrated catalogue for the exhibition Triumph of Color and Light: Ohio Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, held in 1994 at the Columbus Museum of Art. Images accompanying the text in the exhibition catalogue were not reproduced with this reprinting. Ohio Impressionists and Post-Impressionists by James M. Keny U During the period after the Civil War until the Great Depression, Ohio experienced a phenomenal boom in economic activity and a related surge in population. By 1930, this former frontier state was the third most populous in the country and one of the most powerful and diverse economic centers in the Union. With two key northern ports, Toledo and Cleveland, at the center of the Great Lakes waterway and a long Ohio River border, the state was well positioned to become a national transportation center. Before the turn of the century, when the National Road crossed the state from Zanesville to Columbus to Springfield to Dayton, and the railroads followed that course, Ohio had already become an important component of America's tremendous Western expansion. In addition to its solid transportation network and central location, Ohio was rich in natural resources such as fertile farmlands, abundant water, and large reserves of coal, oil, timber, clay, and limestone. The state was also home to or had ready access to seemingly inexhaustible sources of labor due to its relative proximity to large pools of immigrant workers pouring into eastern ports, and, further, the vast reserves of disenfranchised African American laborers from the South who were making or had made their way up the Mississippi system from New Orleans and beyond.

It was presided over by my great uncle Fred Spanierman, who left Vienna in 1902. Nearby was the old Savoy Art and Auction located at 5 East 59th Street (later it moved to 50th Street). It was founded in 1928 and was presided over by my father, Samuel Spanierman. And now, Spanierman Gallery, LLC is located at 45 East 58th Street right between those old memories - and is presided over by myself, Ira Spanierman, and my son Gavin Spanierman. For more than fifty years, Spanierman Gallery, LLC has been dedicated to dealing in the finest nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American painting and sculpture. The Gallery is located in a luxurious space at 45 East 58th Street. With 10,000 square feet of area, the Gallery is able to present museum-quality shows including works on loan from museums and private collections, as well as works from its own holdings. The Gallery is distinguished for its scholarship and actively supports research in American art. In addition, I am personally co-author on the forthcoming catalogue raisonnés of the American Impressionists, John Henry Twachtman, Theodore Robinson, and Willard Metcalf. The gallery is also underwriting the Winslow Homer catalogue raisonné entitled: The Spanierman Gallery, Lloyd and Edith Havens Goodrich, Whitney Museum Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Winslow Homer. These publications will be definitive reference sources on their respective artists.

Claude Oscar Monet (1840 - 1926)
The museum of Vernon is the only museum of the area exhibiting canvases by Monet, thanks to the generosity of the impressionist master and of his son. Claude Monet presented "Nympheas, 1908", a circular work that he painted in his garden in Giverny This rond painting is a first attempt to give a shape to the idea that will later reach its peak in the "Grandes Decorations". In two oval rooms of the Orangerie museum in Paris, walls are covered by a representation of the waterlily pond, surrounding the viewer. Here, Monet focuses on the waterlilies on the pond, he treats the motive like a landscape. He tries to modify the usual references and landmarks to set the viewer in the middle of a closed space. Monet certainly painted the waterlilies from his boat in the middle of the pond, isolated in a circular space. This work is part of a 6 canvases series painted in February - March 1896.
