Edward Coley Burne-Jones In his essay 'The decay of lying' ( ), Oscar Wilde credits Rossetti and Burne-Jones with the creation of a certain style of female beauty: indeed, Punch cartoons of the time guy up these Venus-ringed beauties, who seemed to have come from nowhere.
But if Rossetti invented a 'look', Burne-Jones curbed its excesses, and then in works of vastly increased scope and scale went on to create an equally stylized world for his creations to inhabit. Sustaining this ideal over many years, and largely suppressing individuality in his figures, Burne-Jones' paintings may be seen as primarily decorative: the painter was, of course, a close friend of Morris, and completed many designs for fabrics and stained-glass.
But stylization also gave Burne-Jones the opportunity to express ideas in his paintings without distraction. He explains this in a letter which has often been quoted: "I mean by a picture a beautiful, romantic dream of something that never was, never will be in a light better than any lights that ever shone in a land no one can define or remember, only desire and the forms divinely beautiful and then I wake up, with the waking of Brynhild". And thus he may be given a good share of credit for the Symbolist movement that flourished in his wake, from the until the First World War.

The spirit of symbolism
(Abstract) Edward Jones (1833-1898) took the extra surname of Burne to differentiate himself from the legions of painters named Jones. Burne-Jones was the most important and best painter of the late Pre-Raphaelism . This art, which presents obvious affinities with the Symbolist movement, emerged in England during the years 1850s, 10 years before the beginning of the proper Symbolist period of Gustave Moreau . A new style, which predates Raphael, is at the origin of the creation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. After a childhood spent in his native town, Birmingham, he decided to become a church minister and attended Exeter College at the University of Oxford in 1853. There, he met William Morris who became his lifelong friend. Both shared the same passion for art and undertook a trip to the northern part of France in 1855. After their return and the discovery of the works of Gabriel Dante Rossetti, the leader of the Pre-Raphaelites, they left Oxford without taking a theology degree. Burne-Jones became a painter and Morris an architect. Hardly recognized at the beginning of his career, he nevertheless became celebrated in the 1870s. In 1877, he was persuaded to exhibit at Grosvenor gallery and became famous from one day to the other. His celebrity reached France where number of his canvass were exposed during the World Fair in Paris in 1878.

http://www.ragnarokpress.com/scriptorium/images/burne-jones/main.html
Sir Edward Burne-Jones is probably the most recognized and influential of the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the middle and late 19th century. His work is characterized by the unique look of the women who feature prominently in virtually every piece, by his vivid use of color and his fondness for architectural frames and backgrounds. His women are fit the classic Pre-Raphaelite model of fine features, high cheekbones and abundant, curly red or brown hair, almost always draped in intricate classical gowns. Burne-Jones was strongly influenced by the artistic styles of the Italian Reniassance and by the aesthetic ideas of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Unlike other Pre-Raphaelites like Layton and Waterhouse, Burne-Jones had a practical streak and did a number of works on commission and for publication. In addition to portraits and many unique works based on mythology and Arthurian legend, Burne-Jones worked as an illustrator in both black and white and color. He collaborated with William Morris on the Kelmscott Chaucer as well as illustrating other books for the Kelmscott Press and other publishers. Because much of his work was for speciality publication in very limited print runs, many of his published pieces were not widely circulated and are extremely hard to find.

Trained by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti , Burne-Jones shared the Pre-Raphaelites' concern with restoring to art what they considered the purity of form, stylization, and high moral tone of medieval painting and design. His paintings, inspired by medieval, classical, and biblical themes, are noted for their sentimentality and dreamlike romanticized style; they are generally considered among the finest works of the Pre-Raphaelite school. They include King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid (1884, Tate Gallery, London).

BURNE-JONES, SIR EDWARD
Morris , who became his lifelong friend. He left Oxford to study painting with Rossetti in London and joined the Pre-Raphaelites . Burne-Jones's early work shows Rossetti's strong influence, which was later replaced by his emulation of Botticelli and Mantegna. Burne-Jones rose to success in 1877 with the opening of the Grosvenor Gallery. Among his well-known paintings are King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid (1884; Tate Gall., London); Depths of the Sea; and Star of Bethlehem (Birmingham Gall.). His works described a dreamlike, medieval world, a vision popular with his contemporaries. His designs for stained glass, executed by Morris and Company, may be seen in churches throughout England. Burne-Jones also created the woodcut illustrations for the Kelmscott Press edition of the works of Chaucer. In his day he received many honors, and his delicate, though mannered, work continues to be admired. See his drawings, studies, and paintings, ed. by Piccadilly Gallery (1971); studies by L. D. Cecil (1960) and M. Harrison and B. Waters (1973).
