Burne-Jones was born in Birmingham , the son a frame-maker at Bennetts Hill , where a blue plaque commemorates his birth. His mother died within six days of his birth, and he was raised by his father and an unsympathetic housekeeper. He attended Birmingham's King Edward VI grammar school , and then studied theology at Exeter College Oxford . At Oxford he became a friend of William Morris as a consequence of a mutual interest in poetry, and was influenced by

Martin Harrison and Bill Waters open their biography of Edward Burne-Jones by saying: Had he been able to, Edward Jones whould not have chosen 28 August
1833 and the center of Brimingham as the time and place of his birth. He
would have preferred Florence of the fifteenth century with Botticelli as a
compainion. (Harrison and Waters, 1)
With Morris, Burne-Jones spent endless hours in the library, finding and discussing poetry. As soon as they discovered how similar their interests were, they bonded and began a rather strenuous working relationship, pushing each other to absorb as much poetry as possible. It was through one of these sessions that Burne-Jones found what was to become his lifelong passion and source of inspiration, Malory's Morte d'Arthur . His first impressions of the poem can be seen in some of the journal entries he wrote while at Oxford. He comments on: "The depth, the mystery, the allegorythe beautiful characters of some of the knights"(Harrison and Waters, 11). Jones in fact became so enamored with the legends that he set out to create his own brotherhood in the reflection of Arthur's knights. A description of this group can be seen in a letter he wrote to his friend, Crom Price: Remember, I have set my heart on founding a Brotherhood.

Edward Coley Burne-Jones is the professional name of Edward Coley Jones, English painter, designer, and illustrator, born in Birmingham. He was trained at the University of Oxford, where he befriended poet and artist William Morris . Both men trained with the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti , who reinforced their desire to restore to art the purity of form, stylization, and high moral tone of medieval painting and design. Burne-Jones paintings, inspired by medieval, classical, and biblical themes, are noted for their sentimentality and dreamlike romanticized style; they are generally considered among the finest works of the Pre-Raphaelite school. He designed stained-glass windows, mosaics, and tapestries for Morris' firm. His windows can be seen in many English churches, including Christ Church, Oxford, and Birmingham Cathedral . He also illustrated books of Morris's Kelmscott Press, notably Chaucer (1896). Burne-Jones was knighted in 1894. showNews("Learn") Biography of Edward Burne-Jones Camelot Project at the University of Rochester Proofs of Wood Engravings University of Florida

'Sir Edward Burne-Jones'
John Ruskin Edward Burne-Jones belonged to the second generation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, creating a narrative style of romantic symbolism steeped in medieval legend and fused with the influence of the Italian Rennaissance. He became one of the most sought-after painters in Europe. Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) and William Morris (1834-1896) met whilst at Oxford taking Holy Orders. Here they gained inspiration from the writings of Ruskin, and decided they wanted to become artists. Ruskin saw the work of Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as 'the dawn of a new era of art', and Burne-Jones went to London to seek out Rossetti. Philip Webb , Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown. They created murals, carvings, stained glass, metal work, embroidery and furniture. Their success was mainly due to Morris and Webb's associations with architects, church decoration being their most important activity. When Burne-Jones joined The Firm in 1861, his job as stained glass window designer at Powell's went to his friend Henry Holiday Burne-Jones died on June 17th 1898. Six days later at the intervention of the Prince of Wales, a memorial service was held at Westminster Abbey, the first time any artist had been so honoured.

Chiefly associated with the second generation of Pre-Raphaelites, Burne-Jones also worked closely with designer William Morris throughout his life.
Edward Coley Burne-Jones was born at 11 Bennetts Hill on August 28 . Within days his mother, Elizabeth, died and the child was raised by his father, also Edward, a gilder and frame maker.
While birth certificates were not introduced until three years later, a record of his baptism at St Philip's Church (now Birmingham Cathedral) on 1 January 1834 is stored in the archives of Birmingham Central Library . He later designed the magnificent stained glass windows for St Philip's.
Burne-Jones spent the first 20 years of his life in Birmingham, then a grimy industrial town. His earliest memories are said to have been of the city's celebrations for Queen Victoria's coronation.

Burne-Jones, Sir Edward Coley
Burne-Jones, Sir Edward Coley , professional name of EDWARD COLEY JONES (1833-1898), English painter, designer, and illustrator, born in Birmingham and educated at the University of Oxford. Trained by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti , Burne-Jones shared the Pre-Raphaelites' concern with restoring to art what they considered the purity of form, stylization, and high moral tone of medieval painting and design. His paintings, inspired by medieval, classical, and biblical themes, are noted for their sentimentality and dreamlike romanticized style; they are generally considered among the finest works of the Pre-Raphaelite school. They include King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid (1884, Tate Gallery, London). For Morris's firm he designed stained-glass windows, mosaics, and tapestries. His windows can be seen in many English churches, including Christ Church, Oxford, and Birmingham Cathedral. He also illustrated books of Morris's Kelmscott Press, notably Chaucer (1896). Burne-Jones was knighted in 1894. Photographs by Carol Gerten-Jackson
