Michelangelo Buonarroti, almost certainly the most famous artist produced by Western civilization and arguably the greatest, is universally viewed as the supreme Renaissance artist. He created monumental works of painting, sculpture, and architecture and left an additional legacy of numerous letters and poems. Through this vast and multifaceted body of artistic achievement, Michelangelo made an indelible imprint on the Western imagination.
A member of an old and distinguished Florentine family, Michelangelo was born near Arezzo, Italy, on Mar. 6, 1475, and he died on Feb. 18, 1564, in Romea record of longevity that was as unusual as his precocity as an artist. Like his compatriot Donatello , Michelangelo to the end of his life saw himself primarily as a sculptor, once avowing that he drank in with his wet-nurse's milk the love of the stonecutter's tools. Always a Florentine patriot, even after he had expanded his art into a universal language, he exemplified the character of his native city: a passionate, proud, and independent man, he saw art as a sacred calling through which the dignity of human beings should be enhanced and celebrated. His lifelong fascination with the sublime form of the human body arose from this thoroughly Florentine sensitivity to the inherent worth and nobility of individuals.

Florentine sculptor, painter, poet and architect. Michelangelo was born at Caprese where his father was the chief Florentine official. He was trained in Florence, first in the technique of fresco painting by D. Ghirlandaio; then under the patronage of Lorenzo the Magnificent, in the Medici school. Here he became a sculptor. Here too, his mind was formed by the companionship of the Neo-platonic philosophers, artists, poets and men of letters Lorenzo had drawn to his household. Michelangelo's own genius was recognized and encouraged from the beginning.
Michelangelo carved the large marble David for the city of Florence along with other works of this period are the Bruges Madonna, the painting of the Holy Family, and the large cartoon or design for a fresco, The Battle of Cascina, done in competition with Leonardo Michelangelo. This important work was destroyed, but not before the studies of the nude in violent action had influenced many artists in a way that led ultimately to the style of Mannerism. In 1508, Michelangelo was assigned the job of decorating the whole of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican with frescoes. This enormous undertaking took him over 4 years, working virtually single-handed. He was recalled to Rome in 1534 to paint his 2nd great fresco, The Last Judgement, which covers the whole area of the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel.

Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 - Feb 1564) Michelangelo (1475-1564), Italian artist, one of the most inspired creators in the history of art and, with Leonardo da Vinci, the most potent force in the Italian High Renaissance. As a sculptor, architect, painter, and poet, he exerted a tremendous influence on his contemporaries and on subsequent Western art. Born in Caprese, Michelangelo is most associated with the city of Florence. His father, a Florentine official who had connections to the ruling Medici family, placed his 13-year-old son in the workshop of Florentine painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. Later, after studying at the sculpture school in the Medici gardens, Michelangelo was invited into the household of Lorenzo de' Medici. His patron died in 1492; two years later Michelangelo fled Florence when the Medici were temporarily expelled. In 1505 Michelangelo was recalled to Rome vby Pope Julius II for two commissions. The most important was for the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Between 1508 and 1512, working high above the floor while lying on his back on scaffolding, Michelangelo painted some of the finest pictorial images ever, including such scenes as God Separating Light from Darkness and the Creation of Adam. These images, demonstrating his masterly understanding of human anatomy and movement, changed the course of Western painting. Michelangelo also had been commissioned by Julius II to produce his tomb, which was to be located in the new Saint Peter's Basilica, then under construction. Michelangelo made some of his finest sculpture for the Julius Tomb. These demonstrate his approach to carving: He believed that the figure was imprisoned in the block of stone, and that by removing the excess stone, he released the form.

Sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. Michelangelo Buonarroti is one of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance, indeed of all time.
He began his career in Florence when at age 13 he became an apprentice to the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio . After leaving Ghirlandaio he studied at the sculpture school in the Medici Gardens where he enjoyed the patronage of Lorenzo de Medici, head of one of Europe's most powerful families.
In the mid-1490s Michelangelo moved to Rome where he quickly established his reputation as a talented artist and became the favorite of a succession of popes. He spent the following 30 years creating some of history's most famous works of art, including the sculptures "Pieta" and "David"; the painted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel; and the architectural design for the grand staircase in the Laurentian Library in Florence.
Michelangelo's final years were spent writing poetry, painting a fresco of "The Last Judgment" in the Sistine Chapel, and sculpting an artistically radical "Pieta" unfinished at the time of his death.

Michelangelo's profound influence on art is matched only by Leonardo and Raphael. His understanding of classical art, and his concentration on heroic and idealized male nudes, was profoundly influential. The British Museum has over eighty drawings by Michelangelo, the largest group outside Italy. Born near Florence in 1475, Michelangelo was a pupil of Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-94). As a young man, he painted the Manchester Madonna (National Gallery, London) and carved the Battle of the Centaurs . In 1494 he left Florence and travelled to Venice and Bologna. From 1496 Michelangelo was working in Rome on the marble (St Peter's, Rome) and the painting of the Entombment (National Gallery, London). He returned to Florence in 1501 where he drew the cartoon of the Battle of Cascina to rival Leonardo's Battle of Anghiari , and in 1502-4 he carved the marble David (Accademia, Florence).

    FAMOUS PEOPLE of Florence
DANTE ALIGHIERI Durante Alighieri (Dante being a nickname) was born in Florence in May or June 1265, into a low-aristocracy family, who were not very wealthy, of the Guelfo party. Dante himself went onto become a white guelfo. In about 1285 he married Gemma di Manetto Donati, and they had three or maybe four children.
His political career began when Dante joined a Medical Corporation in 1295. In the following five years his career grew quickly and culminated in his becoming a priore, a type of governor, in 1300. However, due to serious internal struggles between the white and black guelfi Dante made some hard-line political decisions, which resulted in him being sentenced to death.

He is famous for creating the fresco ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, one of the most stupendous works in all of Western art, as well as the Last Judgment over the altar, and "The Martyrdom of St. Peter" and "The Conversion of St. Paul" in the Vatican's Capella Paolina; among his many sculptures are those of the Pieta and David, again, sublime masterpieces of their field, as well as the Virgin, Bacchus, Moses, Rachel, Leah, and members of the Medici family (see article for more information on them); he ... designed the dome of St. Peter's Basilica. A Basilica is a large cathedral. Source: fact-index.com Michelangelo Buonarroti, born in the sixteenth century, was perhaps one of the greatest artisans of all time. He was an accomplished artist, sculptor, architect, and poet who demonstrated his great skill with the creation of many astounding works. Michelangelo's artwork consisted of paintings and sculptures that showed humanity in its natural state. He is remembered today as the man who had sculpted the "David" and the "Pieta", which are two of the most stunning sculptures to come out of the Renaissance period. Although sculpting was the love of his life, his paintings of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and "The Last Judgement" are considered by many his best masterpieces. Michelangelo's artistic career can be divided into two periods.
