Pieter Bruegel the Elder Paintings, Prints The Painter and The Buyer, c1565, pen and ink on brown paper. Pieter Brueghel the Younger was the elder of two sons born just a few years before their father's, Pieter Bruegel the Elder's death. (The father spelled his name Brueghel until 1559, and his sons retained the "h" in the spelling of their names.) Known as "Hell Brueghel" because of his fascination with hobgoblins, fires, and grotesque figures, he made his career in Antwerp, where he became a master in the guild in 1585. He is best known as a copyist of his father's paintings, as they were both popular and scarce. In his own canvases, such as Village Fair and The Crucifixion, he shows a firm grasp of space and movement. His son, Pieter Brueghel III (1589-?1640), was also known primarily as a copyist

His surname is also alternately spelled: "Brueghel" and "Breughel". Life: Though he was sometimes called "Peasant" Bruegel, due to the common folk with which he populated his genre paintings, Bruegel himself was a sophisticated city-dweller who had traveled to Italy. His seemingly simple scenes of everyday life are full of commentary on the religious controversies of his time. Early works display a wry humor, which veered into sarcasm with age. Even so, the compositions themselves are masterful, and represent some of the best loved land- and townscapes ever created.

    Born : Breda (?), Netherlands

Although Bruegel was famous in his own lifetime, the archaic appearance of much of his imagery and his disinclination to adopt the idealized style of portraiture developed by the Italian Renaissance artists had, at least in sophisticated circles, an adverse effect on his reputation both during his lifetime and after his death. Since his works did not conform to the aesthetic theories of the time, the early art historians were inclined to disregard him and indeed there appears to have been little serious academic study of his work until the 20th century. Furthermore there are no extant records of his thoughts on art and no letters by his hand survive. The result is therefore an absence of significant detail concerning much of his life. The date and place of his birth are still not certain, although between 1525 and 1530 somewhere near Breda in the Netherlands is considered most likely. Until 1559 he spelt his name 'Brueghel', then changing to 'Bruegel'. The reason for this is unknown. According to the painter-historian Carel van Mander who included a life of the artist in his

Back to Renaissance Pieter Bruegel (the Elder) was a Flemish artist active in Antwerp and Brussels, famous for his paintings and drawings of landscapes and scenes of robust peasant life, and founder of a dynasty of artists that remained active well into the 17th century. Bruegel's art is often seen as the last phase in the development of a long tradition of Netherlandish painting beginning with Jan van Eyck in the 15th century. This tradition transformed the abstraction of medieval art into a more empirical view of reality.
    • Austria 1969. Detail of a drawing assumed to show Bruegel's self-portrait, issued in commemoration of the Albertina Museum's (Vienna) 200th anniversary.
Bruegel clearly rejected the influences of Italian Renaissance art and its classical foundations, which dominated the work of many of his Flemish contemporaries. Rather than mythological subjects, muscular nudes, and idealized scenes, Bruegel's art portrays figures observed from nature, acting out realistic situations in believable contemporary settings. Unlike most other painters, Pieter Bruegel produced hardly any self-portraits, being disinclined to glorify his own person.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (or Brueghel)
Pieter Bruegel the Elder, was probably the most significant and exciting Renaissance painter and printmaker of the Northern Europe, during the middle part of the sixteenth century, known for his landscapes and peasant scenes (Genre Painting).
He was a Dutch and his nickname "Peasant Bruegel" indicates to his subjects: peasant life, proverbs and genre scenes, the New Testament topics set among common folks of contemporary Flanders. Attention to the life and manners of peasants was rare in the arts in Bruegel's time. His earthy, unsentimental but vivid depiction of the rituals of village life-including agriculture, hunts, meals, festivals, dances, and games-are unique windows on a vanished folk culture and a prime source of iconographic evidence about both physical and social aspects of 16th century life.
Bruegel specialized in landscapes populated by peasants. He is often credited as being the first Western painter to paint landscapes for their own sake, rather than as a backdrop to a religious allegory.
His nickname 'Peasant Brueghel' distinguishes him from other members of the Brueghel dynasty. From 1559 he dropped the 'h' from his name and started signing his paintings as Bruegel.

    Description
Painting Life uniquely conveys the relevance of the paintings of the old Flemish master Pieter Bruegel, The Elder (1520/5–1590) for modern audiences. Based on extensive research and first-hand observation Robert L. Bonn guides the reader through the scenes depicted in these remarkable works of art, including the "something more" so often imbedded in them—the social context in which they were painted, and how they relate to our lives today. Bonn clearly explains why Bruegel’s paintings brilliantly capture the universal conditions of conflict, work, play, folly, and chaos, as well as innumerable pieces of biblical and folk wisdom. His paintings can be found in collections all over the world, including Madrid, Vienna, Brussels, Rome, and Prague, to name a few. Author
Robert L. Bonn was professor at City University of New York. He is author of the noted textbook Criminology. His articles have been published in many periodicals, including The World and I, Criminal Justice Ethics, and Logos. 6 x 9, 174 pages, 30 color illustrations containing 37 Bruegel plates
