This is a painting about emigration, the couple are departing for Australia. The subject itself - departure in desperate circumstances for a foreign land - has parallels with the biblical story of the Flight into Egypt. The artist himself posed for the painting, along with his partner Emma, and their children Cathy, the fair-haired girl in the background, and Oliver, the baby. Purchased, 1891.

Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893)
The story has it that the young Rossetti , very keen to become an apprentice to Ford Madox Brown, wrote to him such an effusive letter that Madox Brown felt he was being made a fool of, found a large stick, and went to seek the younger man with violence in mind. On their meeting, however, Madox Brown was convinced of the genuine enthusiasm of Rossetti, and became first his tutor and then lifelong friend. Madox Brown sympathised closely with the Pre-Raphaelites , although he was never formally one of the brotherhood. Later in life, he said of them: Strictly speaking, I was not one of them. I was somewhat older than them at the time, and I disavowed certain of their tenets. Before meeting them I had already in Paris resolved on a system of individualised and truer light and shade... about this time also I had an attraction towarlds Holbein, after being once chiefly swayed by Rembrandt. On my meeting the Pre-Raphaelites, I shared their feeling for intense and brilliant colour. Many of Madox Brown's pictures may be fairly classed as Pre-Raphaelite. His most important picture is

An unfinished painting by the English painter Ford Madox Brown, entitled Take your son, Sir . Painted in about 1852, the picture tells a story and shows the artist's growing interest in medievalism. In 1850, Ford Madox Brown had written for the Pre-Raphaelite magazine Germ , and Dante Gabriel Rossetti worked in his studio. English painter, associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood through his pupil Dante Gabriel Rossetti. His pictures, which include The Last of England Work Christ Washing St Peter's Feet (Tate Gallery, London), are not always harmonious in design and colour, but as a colourist he excels in some small landscapes. hut(2)

About the artist
Though older, Ford Madox Brown sympathised closely with the new Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood formed in 1848, which paralleled his own ideas, though he was never a member. At first an adviser, at least to Rossetti (to whom he provided painting lessons), in turn he was influenced by them. In 1861 he was a founder-member of the decorating firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Company, for which he designed some furniture and many stained-glass cartoons, until its re-arrangement as Morris and Co. in 1875. These were influential on his later manner which saw a return to his earlier historical approach combined with a looser more decorative style.

Victorian Art in Britain Obituary - Ford Madox Brown The Death of Ford Madox Brown - THE JOURNAL OF ART 1893 Death has been strangely busy in the late autumn with some of the noblest names in English Art. In Ford Madox Brown, who died on October 6th, 1893, passed away not only a brilliantly original and distinctive artist of high accomplishment, but one of the names which connects us with a great revolutionary epoch in English Art. Mr Brown was trained from his extreme youth in the severe practice of Art, to which he was heart and soul devoted. Though later in life so intimately associated with the city of Manchester that many people supposed him to be a native thereof, he was born at Calais in 1821, and was of Scottish parentage. In his boyhood he was placed under the tutelage of Baron Wappers, at Antwerp, and there mastered, in a fashion attempted by few, if any, living artists, the mysteries of all processes of Art, fresco, oil, water-colour, pastel, encaustic, engraving, lithography, and much else. Subsequently, he lived and studied in Paris, and still later in Rome, his earliest work showing the influence successively of Delacroix, who at that time dominated French Art, and the great Italian masters. With the Pre-Raphaelite movement he was never officially associated, though he was a Pre-Raphaelite before the Pre-Raphaelites

by Alastair Ian Wright Fig. 1. Ford Madox Brown, Work Fig. 2. Ford Madox Brown, An English Autumn Afternoon ... The Body of Harold Brought Before William the Conqueror Ford Madox Brown is best known for three paintings begun in the early 1850s: Work An English Autumn Afternoon The Last of England Work and The Last of England comment on the relationship between the classes as they meet on Hampstead's Heath Street or as they share deck-space on a ship bound for one of Britain's colonies. An English Autumn Afternoon depicts the particularities of middle-class leisure on the outskirts of London. Brown's attention to class underlines that what we see here is absolutely up-to-date. Not only the contemporary subject matter but also the style represent the artist's response to the latest works of his Pre-Raphaelite friends. The attention to effects of outdoor light and to the smallest details of the material world follow the lead of artists such as William Holman Hunt and John Millais, who since the late 1840s had been exhibiting paintings of similarly preternatural clarity. The sunlit brilliance of Brown's work in the 1850s marked a new departure in his oeuvre, but other aspects of these paintings reflected what were long-standing interests of the artist. This is particularly true of their attention to the relationship between class and English identity, which manifested itself in germinal form in his work from the mid-1840s on. Stylistically, as we shall see, the earlier works were very different. Thematically, too, we seem to be in a different world, not contemporary England but a series of far-removed moments in English history:

'At that time extensive excavations, connected with the supply of water, were going on in the neighbourhood, and seeing and studying daily as did the British excavator, or navvy, as he designates himself, in the full swing of his activity (with his manly and picturesque costume, and the rich glow of colour which exercise under a hot sun will impart), it appeared to me that he was at least as worthy of the powers of the English painter, as the fisherman of the Adriatic, the peasant of the Campagna, or the Neapolitan lazzarone.
