Photographs courtesy Musée des Beaux-Arts, Arras The idea for the current display and joint operation between the museums of Arras and Quimper originated in 1990, but its realization has taken a long time and, in the meantime, the museum of Dublin joined as a third partner. All three museums possess significant works by Breton. brought this artist to the attention of the American public. This current major retrospective, whose name is based on a comment by Vincent Van Gogh ("Breton c'est la chanson des blés"), covers every aspect of Breton's work and contains 118 works dated between 1847 and 1904; virtually all of Breton's most important paintings are present. Many of the loaned works are from the United States, where his imagery has been warmly received, so it is most unfortunate that this exhibition is not being staged by any museums there. Loans also from French museums and other large Western European collections as well as a considerable number of pieces from private collectors. Un grand pardon breton The exhibition begins with some pieces from Breton's younger days: his training, from 1843, first at the Academy in Ghent under the charge of his mentor, Félix De Vigne (whose daughter Elodie he was to marry in 1858), and, after a short interval in Antwerp, in Paris. Breton experienced the revolution of 1848 at close quarters, and because of family financial difficulties after the death of his father that year, he was forced to Courrières to live with his family. In 1853 he painted his first rural country scenes, which were of his native region. In so doing, he "gave the simple peasants a place previously reserved for the gods and the powerful";

Jules Breton
Petite glaneuse assise dans un champs (c.1853)
(Sold) As one of the primary painters of peasant themes in the nineteenth century, and an artist strongly influenced by his own native traditions from northern France , Jules Breton’s reputation rivaled that of Eugène Delacroix or Jean-Dominique Ingres at the time of his death in 1906. Since then, after a long period of relative obscurity, Breton has returned to considerable favor; he is now regarded as a primary painter of daily life with an inherent and substantial understanding of the old masters form the Italian renaissance especially Raphael. The latter artists helped Breton fashion a highly idealist version of peasant beauty. By examining Breton’s background, it will be possible to understand how he evolved as an artist. Jules Breton (Jules-Adolphe-Aimé-Louis Breton) was born May 1, 1827 to a well-known family from Courrières, a small village in northern France His father was a landowner, though also worked as assistant judge and mayor, and managed the estate of the Duke of Duras. His mother died when Jules when just four years old, leaving him and his two brothers to be cared for by a nurse - Henriette, whom Breton called Mémère - their grandmother, and their uncle, Boniface Breton.

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Breton, Jules Adolphe Breton, Jules Adolphe, bruh TAWN, zhool ah DAWLF (1827-1906), was a French painter known for his sentimental scenes of peasant life. He painted rural subjects about the same time as the noted French artists Gustave Courbet and Jean Francois Millet. But the conservative French public of the Second Empire (1852-1870) rejected the work of Courbet and Millet as too realistic. They preferred Breton's idealized version of the peasant as healthy and satisfied with the social order. Breton's The Gleaner (1872) and The Song of the Lark (1884) are among his best-known pictures.

Breton, Jules
(May 1, 1827 - July 5, 1906)
Jules Breton was from a rural region in the north western part of France. He was born (May 1, 1827) and spent his youth in Courrières, a small village in the Pas-de-Calais; he died in Paris on July 5, 1906. His father, Marie-Louis Breton worked for a wealthy landowner whose land he supervised. After the death of his mother, when Jules was 4, he was brought up by his father. Others in the family, who lived in the same house, and had a deep influence on the young artist's upbringing, were his maternal grandmother and especially his uncle Boniface Breton. All instilled in the young man a respect for tradition, a love of the land and, especially, for his native region, which remained central to his art throughout his whole life providing the artist with many scenes for his Salon compositions.
He received his first artistic training not far from Courrières at the College St. Bertin near St. Omer. Later (1842) he met the painter Félix de Vigne (1806-1862) who was impressed by his youthful talent and persuaded his family to let him study art. In 1843, Breton left for Ghent (Belgium) where he continued to study art at the Academy of Fine Arts with de Vigne, and an other teacher from the school, the painter Hendrik Van der Haert (1790-1846). Sometime later (1846), Breton moved to Antwerp where he took lessons with Baron Gustaf Wappers; he also spent much of his time copying the works of Flemish masters. Trained as an academic artist, Breton was well aware of other artistic tendencies such as the role of genre painting. In 1847, Breton finally left for Paris where he hoped to perfect his artistic training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.

Jules Adolphe Aimé Louis Breton
Jules Adolphe Aime Louis Breton was a 19th century French Realist painter. Breton was essentially a painter of rustic life. His absorption of traditional methods of painting helped make Jules Breton one of the primary transmitters of the beauty and idyllic vision of rural existence. His numerous subjects may be divided generally into four classes: labor, rest, rural festivals and religious festivals.
Jules Adolphe Aime Louis Breton was born on May 1, 1827 in Courrières, a small Pas-de-Calais village. His father, Marie-Louis Breton, supervised land for a wealthy landowner. His mother died when Jules was 4 and he was brought up by his father, maternal grandmother and his uncle Boniface Breton. A respect for tradition, a love of the land and for his native region remained central to his art throughout his.
He met the painter Félix de Vigne in 1842 that, who persuaded his family to let him study art. Breton left for Ghent in 1843 where he studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts with de Vigne and the painter Hendrik Van der Haert.
In 1846, Breton moved to Antwerp where he took lessons with Baron Gustaf Wappers and spent some time copying the works of Flemish masters. In 1847, he left for Paris where he studied in the atelier of the Michel Martin Drolling. He met there Realist painters, including François Bonvin and Gustave Brion. His first efforts were in historical subjects.
