Overview
Rouen, the capital of the Haute-Normandie region and the historical capital of Normandy, has a population of 107,000 residents, and a metropolitan area population of over 518,000. Its original tram system folded in 1953, and the new two route system, termed a "M©tro" although technically a light rail service, opened in 1994, serving central Rouen and three southern suburbs. The system was the third in France to acquire Alstom's then-revolutionary TFS (Tramway Fran§ais Standard) 75% low-floor trams by ordering 28 "rames" (units), following Grenoble and Paris's line T1. The system operator is TCAR (Transportes en Commun de l'Agglomeration de Rouen).
The Routes
Rouen's tramway system begins in central Rouen, on the north bank (or "Rive Droite") of the River Seine with an above-ground station at Boulingrin. It plunges into a subway, with stations at Beauvoisine, Gare-Rue Verte (with direct access to the SNCF railway station), Palais de Justice and Th©¢tre des Arts. From there, it rises to the surface and crosses the River Seine on the east side of Pont Jeanne d'Arc. The tracks then alternately run on surface and through short tunnels, stopping at Joffre-Mutualit© and Saint-Sever Stations. The latter is the transfer station between the branches to George Braque and Technop´le. The lines separate in another tunnel south of Saint-Sever, where the Technop´le route curves to the left (southeast).

He moved to Paris in 1900 to study where he was drawn to the work of the Fauve artists, including Matisse Derain and Dufy , as well as the late landscapes of . Meeting Picasso marked a huge turning point in Braque's development and together they evolved as leaders of Cubism . After a brief interlude in which he was called up to fight in the First World War, Braque's style developed in the direction he was to follow for the rest of his life. In establishing the principle that a work of art should be autonomous and not merely imitate nature, Cubism redefined art in the twentieth century. Braque's large compositions incorporated the Cubist aim of representing the world as seen from a number of different viewpoints. He wanted to convey a feeling of being able to move around within the painting. The still life subject remained his chief preoccupation from 1927 to 1955." Georges Braque (1882 - 1963) French painter, who, with Pablo Picasso, originated cubism and the cubist style, to become one of the major figures of 20th-century art.
Braque was born May 13, 1882, in Argenteuil-sur-Seine, near Paris; he grew up there and in the port city of Le Havre. In 1899, following in his father's occupation, he apprenticed himself as a house painter. By 1902, however, he had settled in Paris to pursue the study of painting as a fine art; he was deeply impressed by the bold style of works exhibited in 1905 by the Fauves (French for the wild beasts). The Fauves included Henri Matisse and Andre Derain, who painted with brilliant colors and a loose structure of forms to capture the most intense emotional response. Braque adopted Fauvism from 1906 to 1907.
By 1908, however, Braque had shifted his attention to the paintings of Paul Cezanne, who was reputed to have restored order and discipline to the extremes of artistic expression. Braque's interest in Cézanne's strangely distorted forms and unconventional perspective led him to paint in the manner that came to be called cubist. In his works of 1908 to 1913 Braque conducted an intense study of the effects of light and perspective and the technical means that painters use to represent these effects. He seemed to question most standard artistic conventions. In his village scenes, for example, Braque frequently reduced an architectural structure to a geometric form approximating a cube—or, more precisely, a rectangular prism—yet rendered its shading so that its volume seemed to be contradicted—that is, it looked both flat and three-dimensional. In this way Braque called attention to the very nature of visual illusion and artistic representation.

    ARTISTS and ART:
    Georges Braque (1882-1963)
The French painter Georges Braque was one of the major painters of the twentieth century, whose partnership with Picasso from 1908-1914 generated Cubism in pre-World War I Paris. Braque was the son of a house painter who ascended to the family trade but at the same time was studying, part-time, at the local art school. Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) captivated Braque, whose 1908 Grand Nu was clearly a response to the Spanish painter's new initiative. Their subsequent association produced the Cubist movement. Braque's contributions included the introduction of overlapping planes, the use of letters in composition, and, after Picasso's developed collage , Braque created papier colle Braque enlisted during World War I, effectively ending the partnership, although his personal Cubist vision continued after the war.
