    Birth Year : 1824
Death Year : 1898 Country : France Eugène Boudin was born in Honfleur. The son of a fisherman and a stewardess, he would have been destined for a life at sea and in fact began to work as cabin boy when he was ten. When he fell overboard one day, however, his mother decided that he had better work on land. Boudin worked first as a printer's clerk and then as a salesman in an art supply shop in Le Havre. The only formal art training Boudin received came from Millet , who bought his paints at the shop and gave the young man criticism on his drawing. Boudin continued in the art supply business until 1846, when he began to devote all his time to painting. By 1852, he an exhibition of his works was held in Le Havre, and in 1859 he began to show annually at the Paris official Salons, where he received a third-class medal in 1881. Although Boudin's art received very little appreciation from the general public, it was greatly admired by such artists as

II, Paris, 1973, no. 1425; illustrated p.64 Boudin’s art is the kind of art which wins you over, not by its audacity of expression or the obtrusive violence of its touch, but by its beauty, which combines intimacy, delicacy and truth innovative in a way because it developed towards the open air, toward impression…his palette of greys and blues, his exquisite shading, his consistent harmony were neither conventional nor formulistic – rather, they were an accurate reflection of nature glimpsed sensitively. - Félix Buhot, Journal des Arts , July 14 th , 1900, quoted in Vivien Hamilton’s Boudin at Trouville , pg. 14 Prior to the formation of the Impressionists, the untrained artist Eugène Boudin had, by the 1860s, already revealed an interest in plein air painting and the depiction of contemporary land- and seascapes. His choice of imagery was influenced by his childhood spent along the coasts of Normandy, rejecting the claustrophobic Parisian scene, and instead faithfully sketching the natural landscape which inspired him most. Indeed, a young Claude-Oscar Monet was first introduced to

He was brought up in the marine atmosphere of Le Harve and upon receiving a municipal grant he was able to study in Paris between the years 1851-1853. Many years of struggle were to follow, but his determination never wavered. He contributed to the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 and to the Salons, attaining great success culminating in a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889.

Beach Scene at Trouville, 1863; oil on wood; 13-3/4 by 22-3/4 inches; National Gallery of Art, Washington, Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts presents the first American exhibition in 30 years to be devoted exclusively to the work of Eugène Boudin (1824-1898),an artist who has often been overlooked in the history of French Impressionism, yet remains one of the most charming and accessible painters of that movement. The First Impressionist is part of Celebrating Paul Mellon, VMFA's year-long commemoration of the centenary of benefactor Paul Mellon's birth. The exhibition is drawn from the collections of the National Gallery and VMFA, which together have the largest and most distinguished array of Boudin's works in America, largely because of gifts from Mr. and Mrs. Mellon and also - in the case of the National Gallery - from Mellon's sister, Ailsa Mellon Bruce. A selection of the National Gallery's works was exhibited in Washington, D.C., this summer as The 49 works in the exhibition include small-scale paintings of tourists at fashionable Normandy resorts, works with which Boudin made his reputation. The hoopskirts, parasols and crinolines of fashionable ladies on beaches and promenades are painted with charm, yet also with a degree of ironic detachment. They range from oil sketches and watercolors to highly finished exhibition pictures. Their fresh palette and accuracy of detail earned the admiration of contemporaries such as Camille Corot (1796-1875) (who called Boudin "the king of the skies."), Edouard Manet (1832-83) and Gustave Courbet (1819-77). Like these artists, Boudin was a strong advocate of painting from nature and greatly influenced the Impressionists who followed him, notably Claude Monet (1840-1926), who once said "I owe everything to Boudin."

Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) had long been fascinated by light on sand and water when he met Impressionist painter Claude Monet . Boudin's early influence on Monet had a long and enduring effect, and Monet traveled to a number of the sites that sparked Boudin's interest. In 1870, Monet even echoed Eugène Boudin's beach scene at Trouville.

La Plage de Trouville (1865) is a clear indication that Impressionist Eugène Boudin seemed to enjoy painting fashionable beach resorts crowded with tourists on seaside vacations. He had a sharp eye for detail and color, allying himself with the new modernists who painted subjects of contemporary life. He portrayed the scene as he saw it, disdaining narrative and anecdote and presenting the figures as part of the setting.

His paintings were in the style of French Impressionism which were painted in oil on both canvas and wood. Boudin began painting at 25 in Paris. His best-known paintings are beach scenes of Brittany, Normandy, and the Netherlands. Noted for the pervasive clarity and directness of his outdoor scenes, Boudin excelled in depicting nuances of light and atmosphere. He painted from nature, influencing the impressionists, notably Monet, to use this working method. Eugene Louis Boudin 1824 - 1898
Unloading Ships was painted a year after the first Impressionist Exhibition (1874), at which Boudin exhibited. A comparison with Antibes created some twenty years later provides a useful means of ascertaining the major changes, if any, in the artist's approach during the intervening years. The composition of Ships consists of a large group of figures forming a frieze and disposed at the side of a ship not quite careened but certainly leaning heavily to one side. The horizon is partly obscured by the boat but the glimpse permitted to us by the artist is set fairly high. In fact, the horizontal middle of the painting coincides with the beach-line which also marks the height of most of the figures. Antibes, on the other hand, shows a broad panorama, a grand sweep of bay with a double promontory or spit - one emphasized by a scattering of dark figures, the other by a small green sailing boat. In Ships, the viewer's eye is held more or less in the same plane by the ship and the linear extension of the disembarking passengers: in Antibes it is attracted to the left by the long boat in the foreground, and the adjacent figure 'under' the red roof, before being led around the bay to the fort on the rock, then onwards to the little green boat.

Wednesday, January 09, 2008 The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has extended the run of "The First Impressionist: Eugène Boudin" through Sunday, Feb. 17.
The exhibition is the first American showing in 30 years to be devoted exclusively to the work of the 19th-century French artist, who has often been overlooked in the history of Impressionism.
"The First Impressionist: Eugène Boudin" was organized by the National Gallery of Art and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
Boudin is chiefly remembered as a mentor to the young Claude Monet (1840-1926), who once said "I owe everything to Boudin."
There are 49 works in the exhibition, which is sponsored in Richmond by Philip Morris USA. Additional support was provided by the Paul Mellon Endowment of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The media sponsor for the exhibition is Virginia Living magazine.
