Eugene Boudin BACK
Eugene Boudin was born at Honfleur, the son of a harbor pilot. From adolescence he worked in an art supplies shop in Le Havre and drew in his spare time. The artists who visited the city, in particular Corot, Isabey, Troyon, and Millet, gave him valuable help and advice. The municipality of Le Havre granted him a three-year scholarship to study in Paris. Boudin first exhibited at the 1859 Salon and then at the 1863 Salon des Refuses. After his return to Le Havre, he spent many summers on the farm of Saint-Simeon, in the environs of Honfleur, with a group of landscape painters including jongkind, Bazille, and Claude Monet. This group is often called the School of Saint Simeon, as distinct from the Barbizon School. Boudin traveled widely in Normandy and Brittany and visited Holland, Belgium, and Venice. Wherever he went, he invariably painted harbor and beach scenes with numerous strolling figures. He was fascinated by towns and seaside resorts of France-Camaret-sur-Mer, Bordeaux, Deauville, Trouville-with their humid climate and shimmering, diffused light. In the 1850s, Boudin met Claude Monet and did much to help the young painter find his true artistic self. In the 1860s, he frequently met Edouard Manet and worked with him in Boulogne and Deauville. In the 1870s, the Impressionists, in their turn, began to exert an influence on Boudin. His landscapes of that period are filled with a constantly changing iridescent light; his palette grows lighter and the brushstrokes assume the aspect of soft, blurred patches of color.

Eugene Boudin (1824-1898) spent his youth in Le Havre. The whole of his life’s course is tied to this "Ocean-Gate" where, gazing towards the horizon, his dreams might have been of that far-away land which was to be the first to welcome him. Anvers, Bateaux sur l’Escaut - 1872 A forerunner of the impressionists, Boudin created freely and with sincerity; he painted for his own enjoyment as a poet of sea and sky, depicting people caught unawares on the beach, conversations, coquetry under parasols, a hasty return before the threatening storm with the flurry of the hooped dresses and ribbons of the disquieted fashionable ladies, boats swinging their masts in the harbours or sleeping along the banks, the quiet of a Breton cove, fishermen’s wives mending the nets or carrying the baskets of fish back on their heads, washerwomen kneeling on the edge of the La Touques river and Breton women in their white head-dresses assembled for solemn blessing, and sunny pastures of the Auge Valley where the cows doze in their mottled coats by a pond. Boudin is now recognized as the most original French marine painter of the 19th century, achieving a mastery of his specialty equal to that of his English predecessors Constable, Bonington, and Turner, and to the accomplishments of France’s own Barbizon landscapists. Through his unprecedented pictorial responsiveness to the elusive magic of sea and sky, he became a chief progenitor of Impressionist landscape painting and greatly benefitted subsequent generations of marine painters. No doubt he even caught the eye of some of those Massachusetts painters who were shooed to Chase’s Gallery by the Boston Post in 1890 before departing for a summer of sketching on Cape Ann. Today there is scarcely a major collection of nineteenth-century French paintings that omits the art of this self-effacing, circumspect but always beguiling intimist.

French landscape painter. Encouraged at an early age by Jean-Fran c ois Millet , Boudin became a strong advocate of painting directly from nature. In 1874 he exhibited with the Impressionists, but, unlike those painters, he was not an innovator, and from 1863 to 1897 he exhibited regularly in the official Salon. His favourite subjects were beach scenes and seascapes, which show remarkable sensitivity to effects of atmosphere; on the backs of his paintings he recorded the weather, light, and time of day. Boudin, Eugene
Eugène-Louis Boudin, French painter, was born in Honfleur, the son of a harbor pilot. In 1835, he settled in Le Havre, where he was apprenticed to a printer. In 1838, he started to work in an art supplies store and drew in his spare time. Paintings by Couture, Millet, Troyon and other artists who visited the city were exhibited in the store. They gave young Boudin valuable help and advice. Soon he gave up the store, to dedicate himself wholeheartedly to painting. In 1847-48, he traveled to Paris, visited northern France. In 1850, he exhibited two pictures in Le Havre, after which the town granted him a three-year scholarship to study in Paris (1851-1853).

Boudin worked directly from nature on the Normandy coast and in particular at the fashionable resorts of Deauville and Trouville. Responsible for introducing Claude Monet to this method of painting outdoors, Monet returned the compliment by painting the beach at Trouville several years later. He was again in Paris from 1851 to 1854 for formal study, financed by a grant from the municipality of Le Havre. Although much of his early work is lost, it appears it was in Paris that he made still lifes of fish and game inspired by Dutch and Flemish paintings of the 17th century, and French paintings of the 18th century. In this effort, he was encouraged by his friend Theodule Ribot. Back in Le Havre, he met Claude Monet in 1858, and began to act as his mentor. He befriended Gustave Courbet around 1859 and Jongkind in 1862. Boudin's first acceptance at the Paris Salon was in 1859 with a piece entitled Le Pardon de Sainte-Anne-Palud au fond de la baie de Douarnenez (Finistre). His work reflected the styles and techniques of the Barbizon school. Boudin exhibited in the Salon during each year from 1863 - 1870. Based mostly along the Channel coast in Normandy, he also traveled extensively throughout France. The son of a sailor, Boudin excelled in views of the beaches along the Channel coast of France, and had been a formative influence upon Monet. He was a plein-air painter of light, water, and the crowd. He obtained a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and ten years later, a year after his death, he was the subject of a posthumous retrospective exhibition held at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. The retrospective consisted of 304 paintings, 73 pastels, and 20 works in watercolor.
