BOUCHER, François
(b. 1703, Paris. d. 1770, Paris)
Biography
French Rococo painter, engraver, and designer, who best embodies the frivolity and elegant superficiality of French court life at the middle of the 18th century. He was for a short time a pupil of François Lemoyne and in his early years was closely connected with Watteau, many of whose pictures he engraved. In 1727-31 he was in Italy, and on his return was soon busy as a versatile fashionable artist. His career was hugely successful and he received many honours, becoming Director of the Gobelins factory in 1755 and Director of the Academy and King's Painter in 1765. He was also the favourite artist of Louis XV's most famous mistress, Mme de Pompadour, to whom he gave lessons and whose portrait he painted several times (Wallace Collection, London; National Gallery, Edinburgh). Boucher mastered every branch of decorative and illustrative painting, from colossal schemes of decoration for the royal châteaux of Versailles, Fontainebleau, Marly, and Bellevue, to designs for fans and slippers. In his typical paintings he turned the traditional mythological themes into wittily indecorous scènes galantes, and he painted female flesh with a delightfully healthy sensuality, notably in the celebrated Reclining Girl (Alte Pinakothek, Munich. 1751), which probably represents Louis XV's mistress Louisa O'Murphy. Towards the end of his career, as French taste changed in the direction of

    71. Haber's Art Reviews: The Drawings Of François Boucher

At the Frick, his drawings reveal a compulsive draftsman and a perpetual student of art. They also offer a survey in miniature of eighteenth-century France. Boucher was born in 1703. Without these seventy-five drawings, his three hundredth birthday could pass all but unnoticed in America. And a good thing, too, some might add. So what makes a famous painter go in and out of historical fashion? The show has something to say about that as well.
    Cavorting with art
The intervening century highlights aristocracy, academicism, and sentiment. No wonder it appears so often as a whipping boy, as a cause of the French Revolution. In its demand for story-telling, it anticipates the Salon art that rejected Edouard Manet Even given his time, Boucher may look odd to modern eyes, which might prefer a more sober contemporary like , much as Boucher did to many even by the start of the next century . Fashionable women, no doubt just right for staged fashion photography today, stand for the seasons, while the naked variety sprawl on clouds. Their round, smiling faces lack for nothing, except perhaps something to do. Their primary colors look extracted more from tubes than from the landscape. Children play at the arts and sciences, as if grown men found all this beneath them. Boucher may give me my first chance to use cavort in a sentence.

    Lovers in a Park
Oil on canvas, 91 1/2 x 76 3/4 in. In Boucher's fairylike vision of a lush garden setting, a young couple and their spaniel have stopped to rest while out for a stroll. The man, who is weaving flowers into the hair of his lover, is distracted by the appearance of a milkmaid or shepherdess, who has been gathering flowers of her own. Any potential tension in the encounter is erased by the idealized quality of the scene. The creamy folds of the seated woman's dress and the richly worked foliage of the surrounding bushes and trees epitomize Boucher's expression of rococo style. This decorative style of art is associated with the reign of Louis XV. Boucher was also the favorite artist of the king's mistress, Madame de Pompadour, for whom he painted some of his most impressive works. Next Return to French Collection

    The Drawings of Fran§ois Boucher
    Oct 7th, 2003
    NEW YORK CITY
:To celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Fran§ois Boucher (1703-1770), an unprecedented international loan exhibition of his drawings is on view at The Frick Collection through December 14. This is truly the first major survey of the artist's graphic work to bring together a substantial number of loans from both international and national public and private collections. Presenting approximately 75 sheets of the highest quality, the exhibition provides a deeper understanding of Boucher's prolific output of works on paper and demonstrates his extraordinary technique and style as a draftsman. The artist's wide variety of subject matter is revealed by a selection that includes depictions of pastoral scenes and landscapes, various conceptions of mythology, religious narratives, historical events, representations of literature and allegory and contemporary scenes. "The Drawings of Fran§ois Boucher" makes its debut at the Frick and then travels to the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas (January 17-April 18). It is curated by Alastair Laing, advisor on paintings and sculpture to the National Trust, London.
